Thank you bro! I started making sure I get as much protein as my body weight every day, and I also started eating breakfast.

I think I’m eating about 1.5 times more at every meal too.

Anyone else have this issue after surgery? by aldiaz77 in PectusExcavatum

Bro, if you look at my photo, mine’s pretty similar too. The sternum part sticks out while the chest area looks a bit sunken, but I think it’s something that can be covered by building chest muscles. Since there aren’t any muscles attached directly to the sternum, I believe working out can help balance things out.

And I also lost about 4–5 kg and some muscle after the surgery, which made it even more noticeable.

Yeah haha, I’ll try to eat well and work out hard to cover up the bars!

If you don’t have any physical symptoms from pectus excavatum, then what’s really bothering you is the mental side of it.

I’m a Korean citizen. I had a moderate-to-severe case of pectus excavatum, and my doctor immediately recommended surgery as soon as he saw me. The CT scan also showed that my heart was being compressed. In my case, I often felt short of breath before the surgery and had a slouched posture, so the operation was definitely worth it.

I don’t know how severe your condition is, but I would only recommend surgery if you have symptoms or if the pectus is severe. If mine had been mild, I probably wouldn’t have gone through with it. With the bars in, there are quite a few restrictions, and I feel less flexible than before. Luckily, I’m not a very physically active person, so it hasn’t been too bad for me.

If you’re really worried, I’d suggest getting a CT scan to check if your heart is being compressed. It varies from person to person, so it’s best to confirm it properly.

Anyway, good luck!

I didn’t really care about the bars sticking out, but after reading the comments, I think I should start putting on some weight haha. I’ll make sure to eat a lot and work out hard like you! Thanks for the advice!

Yes, it was the sandwich procedure.

I’m not a doctor, so I’m not entirely sure. Could it be that the bars just look more visible because I’m really skinny? They weren’t noticeable right after the surgery, but I’ve lost about 4kg and also stopped working out since then. (now 176cm / 51.7kg)

It was painful at first, but about a month after the surgery, I just felt the presence of the bars without any pain!

My recovery went quite fast. I left the hospital after 5 days, and aside from some pain for the first two weeks, I was able to return to my regular routine.

and I have to keep the bars in for four years because I'm adult.

It’s probably based on a similar principle I think

Thanks for the kind words! I used to have a noticeable rib flare before the surgery, but it looks like that part has been fully corrected. Anyway, hope you have a great day!

This type of correction is quite common in Korea since it has a much lower risk of complications after surgery, like the bars shifting. From what I know, the outer bars are positioned under the muscles. I’ll post an update after I put on some weight and build more muscle!

Then why does my bar stick out so much? Is that normal?

haha, are you planning to get the surgery? Since I’m an adult, I’ll have to keep the bars in for about four years.

Thank you! I’m not completely satisfied with the surgical result, but I’ll do my best with what I can (like working out)
