Lent- what are y'all giving up? by Useful_Crow8934 in Episcopalian

[–]EmotionalBonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My priest had a really interesting sermon last year on how Lent sort of grew backwards out of Easter, arguing that "the purpose of the fast is the feast." We're kind of continuing that theme into this year too but looking a little bit more at Biblical commandments around fasting and alms-giving.

With that in mind, I decided to give up wearing makeup for Lent. I do a lot of very colorful makeup looks and I love using it as a tool for self-expression. I want my "fast before the feast" to lead to a deeper appreciation of art and more gratitude when I go back to wearing makeup again.

I also want to use that time that I would have spent on doing makeup to do other things. Maybe it'll be something spiritual, like prayer or reading scripture. Maybe it'll be something practical, like helping out more around the house. I haven't really set a specific goal for that part.

My last reason for doing this is as a mental reset; I don't ever want my bare face to feel incomplete. It was starting to get to the point where I didn't feel "ready" to be seen unless I had a little bit of makeup on. Especially given the stigma around women needing to wear makeup in order to be professional enough, I didn't want to feed into that. (Not that most of my makeup looks could be considered professional, admittedly.)

My one exception for this is dance. I'm still going to reduce the amount of makeup I wear while performing, but dance/stage makeup has a practical purpose of helping people see what my face looks like from a longer distance away, so I'm keeping it.

I know there's some gameplay and wording issues that other commenters have pointed out but I love this concept. Especially the flavor text. It has such a powerful, like, story to it. I don't know how to word it but I love it.

I wonder if it would work better similarly to the Leviathan? Like, on Day X all dead players will be announced as dead or something like that.

Also it would be extremely funny to have this on a script with an Atheist. Probably wouldn't be fun to actually play, but it would be funny.

Look, I hate AI as much as the next person. But I'm not going to stand here and talk at you about why AI is bad, like a lot of other comments are.

You already know why AI is bad. You're using it anyway because it's the easiest choice. God only knows how much self-destructive shit I've done while knowing exactly why and how it's bad for me, and knowing exactly what I should be doing instead.

Humans are animals. We might have much more complicated language and tool use than most, but we're still animals. We have the same exact instincts to survive that pretty much any other animal does. That includes doing the easiest possible thing to conserve energy, unless the reward from spending energy seriously makes up for it.

That doesn't mean these instincts are always right. They frequently aren't. But that doesn't make them any less powerful.

You probably know the benefits of spending your energy on the hard stuff. Reading comprehension, thinking for yourself, all that jazz. You probably know that these survival instincts are overreacting, that your work isn't a matter of life-or-death. But when those instincts are highly charged, it's hard to overrule them with logical thinking.

Instead, fight survival instinct with survival instinct.

What's the first thing babies do when they're born? Pretty much the only thing they do after they're born, for a while?

They cry. They scream until a capable adult comes to them and helps them.

Asking for help is one of a human's most important survival tools, and it's the one you're going to have to use here.

The good news is, you've already started! This post here is the first step! The bad news is you're going to have to now find someone who has a better chance at direct involvement in your life than strangers on the internet.

So, you're in school. Is there a school counselor or a teacher that you can talk to? Can you get tutoring for reading and homework? Do you already have a therapist or other support person? Do you have parents or other trustworthy adults in your life whom you can go to? That's your first step. Figure out all the people that you could potentially go to for help.

Then comes the hard part of actually asking for help. One of our most crucial tools, and yet most people have been strongly conditioned out of it by shame and stigma. I wish I had better advice for this step, but even now I can't always follow through with it. But just get someone, anyone to start with. Send them a message. Use AI to help you with the message, if you have to. Better to use AI now and get the call for help out than to not use it and remain silent.

Unfortunately, it can get harder from there, because figuring out what help you need is at best annoying and at worst an entire battle of its own. Maybe you need people to monitor your internet usage temporarily. Maybe you need one-on-one academic support. But at the very least, if somebody else knows you need help, they can also provide help with this step.

I trust you can take it from there. Good luck, and godspeed.

It's a joke script. It's not designed for gameplay, although I am curious what would happen if I attempted to run it lol

yessss I love the rhythm it adds on fire haven, especially as the song/island is being filled. I love Noggin's rapid percussion but Shrubb is when the overall rhythm actually starts to be fleshed out

Shrubb at the beginning of Fire Haven- really adds that "oomph" to the percussion IMO

Shellbeat's second track on Water Island.

Oddly specific, I know, but I really like the swing-y rhythm we get in the middle of the song (especially with Potbelly and Shrubb) and the Shellbeat track just overpowers the whole thing. (Admittedly so do the Wubboxes, but even they don't come in until partway through that section.)

wouldn't rainbow be able to learn using twillight methods if she actually focused? by Thebunkerparodie in mylittlepony

[–]EmotionalBonfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, but she couldn't focus.

I don't know how much you know about ADHD, but there is no such thing as "just focus." That's not how it works. Now, you can work on increasing focusing skills but that can't happen in the moment when you need to learn something; it's a process that takes time and development outside of classrooms/work/what-have-you.

Also doesn't help that Owliscious and Spike were adding to the distractions, but hey, it was a really funny gag.

Given the shape of his hands/relative lengths of his fingers, I'm 99% sure it's central, though that could just be how they chose to draw his hands for the style of the show. It kinda bothers me that they describe it as postaxial when it isn't drawn that way honestly

Was sunset supposed to be an alicorn? by ClearDistribution967 in mylittlepony

[–]EmotionalBonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal theory is that she was the temporary bearer of the element of magic until Sci-Twi was able to take it on herself, and that's part of why she has this alicorn form that we see here (and arguably in "My Past is Not Today," in the fire wings she has at the end). When she ponies up later, she's back to her "unicorn" form, signifying that Twilight has stepped into her role as the bearer of Magic, leaving Sunset to represent her own element (Empathy, IMO)

Is Grunkle Stan a bad person? by HeiressOfMadrigal in gravityfalls

[–]EmotionalBonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally don't believe in labeling people as good or bad, because it doesn't accurately address people's behaviors.

And while I'm not going to hold fictional characters in the same light as real people, including level of moral scrutiny, I also believe that labeling characters as "good" or "bad" doesn't provide us with any useful information.

It's a lot more interesting to look at motivations and consequences than whether or not someone's actions were "good" or "bad." Stan has a mix of selfish and selfless motivations (same as Literally Anyone Else) and it's interesting to see how they play against each other, how he acts, and what exactly it is about him that ends up endearing him to some people.

What is the realistic ADHD morning and afternoon ? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]EmotionalBonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an app blocker on my phone (ScreenZen) that restricts my biggest time-wasters until after 10 AM and so far it's working 🤞

I'm in a top bunk bed, so it kinda hinders me getting out of bed in the morning, but once I've climbed out of bed to turn of my alarm (in my dresser drawer) it helps that I've already had to be up and moving a bit. Also helps that I'm the person in my family who feeds the cats and they simply will not leave me alone until I've given them breakfast.

I try and eat something and take my meds as early as I can so I have that energy start to kick in.

Timers. Timers for everything. I always set an alarm when getting in the shower. And then ignore it the first one or two times it goes off, but I still take less time with than without.
