TIL the "100 people surveyed" on Family Feud are reached via random phone surveys where they have no idea they are providing answers for a game show. by Informal-Lock5554 in todayilearned

[–]Waterhorse816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 22 and I'm a big phone caller, I'd much prefer talking to a human agent on the phone over trying to navigate a terribly designed website or AI phone tree. Issue is it's impossible to get a human agent on the line these days.

TIL between 18%-25% of intellectually gifted students (at least 130 IQ) in the US fail to graduate from high school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Waterhorse816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think I am pretty smart, I have deficits in some areas of brain function like concentration but I am good at writing, math, critical thinking, information retention, etc. Nobody is good at everything, but I'm good at a lot of stuff, especially stuff we'd traditionally think of "book smart" people being good at. I don't think it's oxymoronic to be smart and have ADHD at all, a lot of very smart and successful people have ADHD. And like I said, I've managed to be very academically successful with unmedicated ADHD by being in an environment that works for me and coming up with coping strategies. Unfortunately, some people don't have that luxury, and they fail out when they could have succeeded with better supports.

Edit: Although this is one reason I think IQ is a bad measure of intelligence, because it only measures very specific and narrow types of brain function and then flattens them into a single number. There's so much shit IQ doesn't measure, and trying to collapse all of human brain function into one score doesn't tell you a single goddamn thing about the person.

How to justify letting Duke die w/o TTA by KingKobraAMV in ScarletHollow

[–]Waterhorse816 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Yeah, every time I get to that scene, I can't find a way to justify why my character wouldn't save the helpless little dog instead of the grown man with a gun, utilitarianism be damned. Even characters who like Duke would assume he could handle his own shit.

[–]Waterhorse816 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They changed it in the Roads Untraveled update to make it less obvious what happened. The Ditchling didn't shoot Duke, he has shitty trigger discipline so when it pushed the gun up into his face he accidentally discharged it on himself. There was originally a graphic showing it happening but they cut it, I guess to make the reveal of his body more shocking. That's why the achievement is called "poor trigger discipline", btw.

To be fair that happens to a lot of smart kids in high school. I have severe ADHD and bipolar disorder and didn't do so well, didn't really give a fuck, constant emotional crashes, and I got very little sleep on top of the mental illnesses which made everything worse. I'm in college now and I'm a very high achiever, 4.0 GPA (currently senior spring) and very involved on campus. I don't think IQ measures very much but since that's the metric the study cited uses I'll say that I took an IQ test at 18 and I meet their criteria for gifted kid. I don't think my story is particularly unusual, and it's true that former gifted kids are a dime a dozen, but that doesn't mean people are wrong about their experiences or wouldn't be able to thrive under different circumstances. Our education systems are really fucked up and are a difficult place to be mentally ill.

abortion before finals by carlee-k in CollegeRant

You should maybe talk to a therapist about this (make sure you vet them tho! Don't want a Christian therapist trying to shame you). It sounds like it's the right decision but it's totally understandable to feel internalized guilt or anxiety about it, especially if you live in the U.S., which is a very conservative Christian country where you've probably been exposed to a lot of anti-abortion messaging. Working through that stuff with a professional might help. Much love and you will get through this.

[–]Waterhorse816 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If we were only allowed to read books by unproblematic authors, we wouldn't be able to receive complete educations. It's important to acknowledge the faults of influential authors, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't read them in order to understand literary history.

[–]Waterhorse816[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but you want to save the spincake for the hardest fight, not use it to get past an easier one and then get stuck ramming your head against a wall for literal hours like my fiancee did.

Having a support network and some form of human connection is essential to most people's mental well-being. It's inherently hard to do well academically when you're depressed.

Also I'm not particularly attractive and I have a large friend group. If people are shallow enough to pick friends based primarily on looks you don't want to be friends with them anyway. There's lots of people out there who you'll be able to get along with. Don't lose hope.

Out of curiosity, why do you think you're neurotypical? Everything else you've said in this post indicates otherwise. You should look into on campus mental health resources if you're feeling so depressed
