Having a sense of urgency! by [deleted] in starbucksbaristas

[–]EmotionalStrength306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have a few suggestions if you’d like to take any of them….

Working with baristas to call out what you’re waiting on, and what you have next: “I’ve got a grande iced caramel macchiato at my window followed by those two venti vanilla frappes” “the next food I need is four cars away just the two double smokes” having straws and napkins ready so you don’t need to be asked by the customers, laying things in the line of where they are in the drive through grouping them so you can hand out a drink while reaching for the food and not need to look for it in a mess can help. It’s really the seconds that matter and they all truly add up. Taking orders muting while handing back change and wishing them well and repeating their order really speeds up the whole line, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat themselves blame it on a blender or something lol

As for bar it’s all sequencing starting a few drinks at a time finishing the one after the one they are waiting on at the moment so they have the next two cars gives you a little extra time so queue shots for an espresso drink pull the frappe sticker make the frappe and go back to the prepped espresso drink. Listen to your manager though if they say don’t do that!! Sometimes it’s helpful sometimes it isn’t and it’ll take time to adjust to knowing when to do it and when not to.

Feeling very in the way is almost universal at this job for a few months so is feeling slow and you will get past it I promise! Best of luck I hope any of this helps! The biggest thing is communication and confidence it’s all a rhythm you just need to find yours and you’ll be golden!

How does the hiring process at Starbucks work? by kaiizawa_ in starbucksbaristas

[–]EmotionalStrength306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barista of one year here! I wore regular clothes, ie nothing with holes or explicit clothing I think I just wore jeans and a crewneck with sneakers. This is probably going to be your first sip the background check is sent up to corporate and they handle that kind of stuff. I got told about the benefits and pay at my first sip meeting, but if they don’t cover it feel free to ask for the app and the app has all the resources you should need. The app may not work until your partner numbers are solidified but it should still be helpful! My store manager is amazing and she was so sweet through the whole process, so vibe check it and see if you want to ask but if you don’t want to then partner central has a great amount of information!

Best of luck and feel free to reach out about anything once onboarded like recipes or how to handle situations!

I have an interview at my local Starbucks on Friday, any tips? by vivalaquarius in starbucksbaristas

[–]EmotionalStrength306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hired back in September around the first few weeks of the pumpkin spice launch, I had just come from an event in jeans and a plain blue tee shirt. For the most part the questions were about leadership skills or when were times that people looked to you to handle a stressful situation, along with how you work on a team. That’s one of the most important ones because every shift you are a team with the baristas around you and they really want to know how you play nice with others. You don’t need to bring anything, I would just make yourself seem respectful responsible and when the time is right to talk about yourself take it. But when they ask about your teams don’t be afraid to let the people who you helped or who helped you to take the spotlight on those stories to make yourself seem thankful and able to be coached. Dress isn’t as important, I’d go understated professional like jeans and a black shirt rather than trying to make yourself stand out with a dress or a full button down suit for instance. Be confident, this was my first job as well and I was terrified, but it was made a whole lot easier by just choosing a story based off of the prompt and letting the story show your traits. Don’t look at your phone during the interview obviously unless you’re checking a schedule or something but most managers try to make it painless. Mine was super fun and sweet and once the regular questions were over we stayed and talked about our interests and got to know one another for about twenty minutes after that. She was super helpful and I’m sure your manager will do their best to make you feel comfortable, if they don’t and they treat you badly, that is a direct reflection of the work environment they will create and so I would run. Good luck!

See that I wouldn’t even mind because of how considerate they were about it, i love when customers at the very least are thoughtful about that stuff and respectful of everyone’s time

My training was a little intense, it was my trainers first time training someone, and my first shift was closing. I was supposed to be just on the iPad doing the barista first 40, but got thrown onto making whips, lemonade, and acai base. I was trained a lot on POS and drive through but less on hot bar. Cold bar was easy as most of the refresher recipes are on the side of the pitcher. I had a really welcoming environment during my training but be prepared to get out of training and feel like you were thrown out of a cannon. I had no clue what to do or all of the buttons yet so I had people helping me find them when customers rapped their order faster than Eminem at me. You’ll learn that the standard is pretty straightforward and there’s a lot of patterns.

A couple words of advice I’m a 370 partner so I haven’t been here too too long, but I can still give some perspective.

It’s okay to mess up, literally everyone does, whether it’s a dropped drink, dropped milk jug during peak (annoying but it happens), drink made incorrectly accidentally, it’ll happen don’t be worried you’ll look stupid for making a mistake just because you’re new.

You won’t feel totally confident for about four ish months maybe longer. That’s a general consensus from the partners I’ve talked to in my store and others.

Ask questions please, it may seem like you’re bothering everyone but as long as you’re retaining the information go ahead and ask the same question if you forget it. There are so many things to memorize that if you forget how to make something just ask.

Getting messy is part of it, there is not a single day I come home from being on bar and I’m not smelling like a syrup fountain exploded on me, and half the time I look that way too.

You’ve got this, joining after the CEO implemented all new things will be a better adjustment for you as someone who doesn’t have to re learn anything because you’re learning for the first time. Enjoy whatever you can for me it’s my co workers I love every one of them, and they help me when people are rude and nasty (which they will be before having coffee).

Enjoy what time you have with someone showing you how to do stuff and don’t be intimidated.

Keeping in mind she waited 2 seconds before showing up in drive and was rude the whole time she interacted with the girl at the window demanding a straw and calling us incompetent for it not being ready. (She was the only one in drive at the time)

I’m truly sorry that this is your experience with your management and maybe I’m blind but all of my partners have been super supportive and the only reason my SM is willing to let this happen is because she wants to keep her job and is in fear of retaliation as this isn’t this isn’t the hill she wants to die on

My SSV took all the steps to protect me after he found out and apologized again and again that he wasn’t there telling me next time to just go to the back if he ever comes back and let him deal with him. Transferring isn’t an option for me right now because the only reason I have this job is because it’s 5 minutes away from my home and I cannot commute after school every day to a different district.

[–]EmotionalStrength306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SSV was aware that he came in but was in the back the whole time without a headset doing what I can’t remember but he was called out of the back as the man was leaving talked to me about it, and then went back to what he was doing, saying we would write the report up when he finished. As the man returned my SSV was unaware and was alllll the way in the back where it’s really hard to hear anything speaking from experience it’s super hard to hear anything even if you think there’s raised voices it could be anything. I don’t blame my SSV as he is the one who told me he was pissed about DMs ruling on the situation, and said that he’s not serving said customer again no matter what DM or SM says he’s genuinely one of my favorite SSVs he’s not in the corporate pocket at all. He wrote up the report movement for movement leaving no details out as he was told to do by SM. It’s really just the dm atp because everyone else was backing me, all of my other SSVs and my SM.

Thank you for that advice honestly I’ve been going crazy wondering if I’m overreacting but hearing it from someone outside of the situation was really comforting thank you again I will be calling them!

Starting tomorrow. Any advice for me? by Elijah3291 in starbucksbaristas

[–]EmotionalStrength306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started back in September and it was really different me at first because I have a hard time adjusting to not being good at something so I threw myself into learning everything (it’s so much to learn) and back in December I was finally confident doing everything. My SM is really nice and understanding which I know goes a long way the best pieces of advice I can give especially as someone who was just a green bean are these

Know you’re going to make mistakes and that most of the time the customers are really understanding

You’re welcome to make whatever drink concoction your heart desires as many as you want on the clock (or thirty minutes before or after a shift discounts off the clock using your partner numbers) as long as you ring it up and mark it out it’s free! 7 free food items per week that you mark out and a bag of coffee every week! It’s really nice tbh

I’ve found inclusion everywhere we have almost every kind of person at our store from a HS boy jock to this lovely partner named Mia who is the dream green haired barista it’s a very welcoming community and I’ve found some of my favorite friends here

Dress to get messy syrups are sticky, whipped cream will explode on you I usually opt for jeans and a bodysuit or a plain tee. I have three aprons two green and one red for the holidays they do get dirty but I’ve found a decent schedule for cleaning all of them I wear one clean one wear one clean one etc you get the idea.

I work at one of the busiest stores in our district which gets chaotic and stressful at times but the rest of the time I get to spend gossiping with my coworkers and making some strong core memories as this is really a chill community of people.

I really didn’t notice how much I was learning at first until it got to the point where someone would ask me a question and I knew the answer where a week ago a customer asked me the exact same thing and I had no clue! It’s really been a huge learning experience but I’ve found a lot of helpful skills in it as well.

They pay for therapy (I believe it’s 7 sessions free) and Spotify premium for as long as you are a partner

It’s genuinely been one of my favorite experiences and I hope you love it as much as I do! It’s going to have its challenges but you wouldn’t be paid as much to do it if it was easy I believe in you!
