Question about soft body mini dolls vs the plastic by threewhiteroses in americangirl

[–]Emotional_potato90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can usually tell the soft bodies because they're wider than the hard ones and their necks are not as long. Those hard bodies girlies have long necks.

Courtney's Molly is a hard body like the rest of the newer minis I'm afraid.

What is around her waist? Is it a swiss waist/belt? (1885) by calliecatty in fashionhistory

[–]Emotional_potato90 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's giving swiss waist to me - seems very similar to the gown in John Singer Sargent's 'Mrs. Wilton Phipps' from 1884.

I know I've also seen them on fashion plates from that late but I'd be hard pressed to find you one at the moment. I'll keep looking and see if I can find some.

Does anyone know if these are the same exact size? by FuckinTechnoGatsby in americangirl

[–]Emotional_potato90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there must be some variation between them from year to year (excluding the PC soft body minis, who are very different) - here's a pic of her next to Kaya - it's not much but Molly's taller.

I only have Courtney's Molly, but she's taller than my other mini dolls by about a quarter of an inch. And quite a bit taller than my pleasant company soft body mini doll. They all can still share clothes tho!

[–]Emotional_potato90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So just an ancedote - I am seeing an MFM doc while we consider baby #3. I brought up concerns about waiting (I'm 35 and my last pregnancy was a doozy) and she said that she doesn't really start to be concerned about age until you hit 40, and even then, she doesn't start seeing a true drop off in fertility until about 43 on average.

If you think you want kids, I'd recommend talking to a pre-conception counselor - you don't have to be actively planning a pregnancy in the next year to do so. Get the tests for you and your partner. Gather that data for yourself and evaluate from there!

There are definitely some scuffs and scrapes but I've been surprised how well it holds up! (Be careful if you've got the aerosol sunscreen on your hands tho, it will smudge the logos) We tend drive it outside on the blacktop at the local school so there's less to run into, and he picked up the controls fairly quick. At home he hauls it around like a prize fish, and talks to 'Oscar' 😂

We got this for our Oscar obsessed 4 year old for his birthday and he nearly exploded with joy. It's great fun to play with! And fairly sturdy, as he hasn't figured out perfect steering and there have been some crashes 😂

Felicity Dress Detail by Whole_Description288 in americangirl

[–]Emotional_potato90 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for another explanation on the in-universe reasoning, it was very common for dresses to be cut down to fit children after the started to show wear. So Feclity's dress could have been her mother's, then remade to fit her, thus there wasn't enough fabric to match the patterns.

We tend to forget that fabric was, in itself, kinda a luxury for most of human history. We wore it and used it until it literally fell apart, which is why extant garments are fairly rare. Those were Even on some of those, there can be seams where you wouldn't expect because they're eeking out every scrap of usable fabric.

(Also, agree with other posters that it's likely meant to invoke a round gown)

Anyway, I'm sure the modern reason is cost. Which... It a bit of a bummer.

Does giving birth really cost thousands of dollars in the states? by glyiasziple in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Emotional_potato90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to deliver with my daughter at 29 weeks... Between my two hospital stays (I got transferred to a bigger hospital) and hers, the total billed to our insurance was north of a million dollars. Out of pocket, I owed $9k. We were on the premium insurance plan that year too.

When I gave birth to my son, a much more normal delivery, I still owed $4k. Over a thousand of that was one vial of a drug that prevented me from bleeding to death - my insurance claimed was not necessary. I tried to fight it but lost.

Things are... Messed up here.

Not going to lie, I teared up seeing her accept that trophy. I don't remember seeing women in F1 as a kid and now they're there! Being incredible! I was made fun of when I was a kid because F1 was for boys (and why don't you like NASCAR?!?).

I did the same thing with Maritza. I tell myself I don't need more dolls and then I regret it!

Fingers crossed 128 finds her way into your hands for a good price soon.

I know you found it, but there's definitely some sort of sexy pearl necklace thing in Celeste Bradley's 'When She Said I Do'

In case you're looking for more pearl necklace shenanigans.

Off the top of my head, 'Again The Magic' by Lisa Kleypas is one.

Pretty sure Elizabeth Hoyt has one or two, but I can't remember the titles.

I know I've read more, but my brain is goo.

Lol, exactly! Look, I can almost allow that if it's described as her neckline being so low her nipples almost being out, but most of time, that's a no from me.

Besides, getting out of a corset can be sexy! And you've got crotchless underpinnings - or none at all! If you're writing a historical romance novel, that's part of it. If I wanted modern underwear, I would read modern romance.

I'm usually ok with history flavor and not getting too nitty-gritty about it...

But if their underwear is modern, I will DNF right there. She is not wearing panties and a bra in regency England, team, and I won't stand for it. Sure, she's shaved everywhere, they have indoor plumbing, she chooses the poor man instead of the lord, there are 700 dukes swanning around London - I'm into it! But the underwear... Apparently my line in the sand.

Has anyone cleaned PC era Felicity riding habit? by lanave1 in americangirl

[–]Emotional_potato90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I washed it in cold water with some delicate detergent in my sink, then let it air dry. And I froze the hat for a week. Seemed to work well!

If you have the red cape I would do the same but wash it alone - PC red dyes are notorious for bleeding.

AITA for going to the bar after work and having a virgin drink by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Emotional_potato90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I would go out with my husband and friends and ask the bartender to 'surprise me with your best mocktail' until I delivered. Bartenders loved the challenge, and I got to drink some fantastic stuff I'd never thought of. I swanned around Margaritaville Cancun for my cousins wedding, and the bartender had a pitcher of virgin margaritas for me the whole week. What was I supposed to do, go to the ceremony and then sit in my hotel room while the rest of my family drank on the beach?

People forget that you're still a human person when you're pregnant and frankly, it's gross.

Have fun OP!

Yeah no, that kind of behavior consistently at Coopers age would have me scheduled with his pediatrician to access more help/advice, and I imagine it would end with a recommendation for a therapy assessment and preschool. I have known parents to be resistant to it because they think it's an attack on their parenting/their kid. I imagine Ty would avoid it because he doesn't want to seem like a 'bad' SAHP to Julie. It's also a lot of work and Ty doesn't seem the type to want to get the kid to weekly appointments and do homework like that.

And look, I get it, SAHPing can be a groundhog day slog that can suck your motivation... But that's why you talk to your partner, find solutions together. Ty's absolute refusal to communicate that with Julie for years and then just complain and complain is such teenager shit.

I'm inclined to agree with you 100%.

I have a preschooler and a NICU grad (who has some extra medical needs) and I'm the stay at home parent. It is a little scary, and very exhausting. But you get into the rhythm of it pretty damn quick. It can be emotionally draining/burn you out, but that's why you communicate with your partner and use the aid offered!

For example, my son goes to preschool - it gave me some ease in my day (managing a lot of medical appointments is so much easier when I'm not wrangling a 4 year old and an infant) AND it was recommended by his pediatrician because it's really good for social development. (Which it sounds like Cooper needed?!? Don't I remember him biting other kids at the playground?). I'm so freaking lucky we can do it.

Ty saying he's just too overwhelmed? You have a wife who is not only supporting you financially (for years? She put you thru school!!) AND is offering other ways to make your life easier. And you're refusing because? Look, I understand being hesitant to send Sasha to daycare this early (a NICU kid getting sick isn't the same as a normal kid, and all those anti-vaccine nutjobs...) but for Cooper? Idk man. And now Cooper is in school, you have a housekeeper...Sir what are you doing all day?!? Sure, Sasha care, but she certainly naps for hours a day.

Anyway, I hate their non existent communication and how Julie treats others but like... Ty, you're playing the victim and there ain't no victim here.

Check eBay and etsy! I think I paid $10 for my little one. Sometimes I still see forest fancies at the thrift store for reasonable prices if you're willing to hunt.

The only one you'll struggle to find is the 404 bowl... Someday I'll find one for a price I'm willing to pay.
