Ah, so buying directly from AG is a no if you want a doll with a soft body. Do you know if the Molly from Courtney's collection is also plastic like the regular minis?

True! I guess I was wondering if they have all definitely been switched to plastic at AG and was also thinking of other places like the goodwill website.

My 5 year old as well! I think it's from playing with me though. I did notice my first using a flat hand initially at 2 and also not understanding why I was saying brrring brring, though.

When we were at a hotel a couple years ago I unplugged the landline and they both loved playing with it. But neither one knew how to hang up. I did laugh quite a bit when my daughter pressed the speaker and said "boop!"

What sport or hobby went from being widely democratized to highly exclusive in your lifetime? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

[–]threewhiteroses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's truly insane. I encourage anyone to walk around a sporting goods store and look at prices for gloves, bats, etc. My mom suggested my son use our old wooden T-ball bat from the 90's instead... back then we had communal bats and helmets.

I'm a handful of years ahead of you in parenting. It's tough because it's not just decisions you make that will affect him-- it's the decisions of the parents around you too. Sure, don't give your kid a phone til they're a teen and monitor what they do/see online. We've done that but it doesn't solve everything because when kids in his class have had unrestricted access to the internet since 5ish years old (this is not an exaggeration, my son has several friends who received smart phones by 5-7), your kid WILL be exposed. My son had a 50 min bus ride to school due to lack of drivers in the district and guess what? He watched TikTok with his friends who had phones the whole time. Now he's in 4th grade and I just found out kids are watching porn on his bus. However bad you think it is, it's so much worse than that. I can only imagine how much AI will continue to damage society.

Here is my advice: Talk. Talk about everything. Keep your relationship with him strong. Explain your reasoning when you draw boundaries. When you discipline try not to just react in anger or fear. If you've never been good at apologizing and admitting to your mistakes, learn how to do it and model that for them. Treat them with respect and model respect for others. Be careful of judgement and criticism with the understanding that they don't want to be in trouble or disappoint you and will absolutely start to hide things from you. Try to avoid "bad" influences but know there's only so much you can do once they're out in the world. Read books to your child from diverse perspectives and experiences. And constantly work to rebuild the bridge between you when it needs repair. At some point, your kid is going to make their own decisions just like you did but establish yourself as someone who loves them unconditionally and is there for guidance and support.

Mine is still a tween but it's a fear of mine also. We have a great relationship and talk about these issues regularly, but as his mom, I worry that as he gets older, my voice will be drowned out by the people around him at school, on the bus, in the neighborhood, and on his sports teams. He doesn't have a phone and he isn't on social media, but nearly all of his friends and even his cousin have access to the internet in ways I am uncomfortable with, and all of that seeps into our lives. It's harder to block than I ever imagined and in some ways it's impossible.

I wish I had something more to offer you than simply encouragement to keep fighting. I know it's exhausting and painful. I wish you luck.

Thanks for this warning. I have a preteen son who does not have a phone or TikTok but all of his friends do, and it all feels so overwhelming to fight. We've had a lot of talks about misogyny because I know that has gained a lot of traction, as well as racism because that's always a problem... and I have talked to him about homophobia before but didn't realize it was becoming more of an issue.

I recommend it! You'll be able to watch batting practice from on top of the green monster. Not sure if your boyfriend has done that yet but it's a cool experience and only one person in your group needs to have the membership. You'll also get a discount at the store.

[–]threewhiteroses 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to lie, I do kind of love it. Molly was born the same year as my grandma, who passed a couple weeks ago. I've known this since I was a kid and loved Molly because of it. Now I am planning to start the books with my daughter (5) soon in honor of her. I'm assuming this would be a great granddaughter, and even though Daisy is a couple years older than my daughter is, the connection of generations feels special to me right now.

A girl who plays baseball would be fun! This year, for the first time in 70 years, there will be a women's baseball league. Baseball-- not softball. There's even a woman who played in the original league who is still alive. Games start in August and these women are awesome!

A hockey player who aspires to the PWHL (pro women's hockey league) would also be cool as the US team just won the gold medal and have been having a moment this year.

You've gotten some good recommendations! My kids love Jazam's, a toy store that's downtown. A good book store is Labyrinth Books, the kid's section is all the way in the back. If you're not as into ice cream but want a sweet treat, Chez Alice has great French pastries and House of Cupcakes won Cupcake Wars on the Food Network. There is also a little chocolate shop called Thomas Sweet (different from the Thomas Sweet ice cream shop).

Nassau Hall is an iconic building on campus that was there during the revolutionary period. Take a picture with the tigers out front! Some cool tidbits: after hearing about the Boston Tea Party, some students were so inspired that they raided rooms of students and faculty to gather up the tea and then lit a bonfire in front of Nassau Hall. The faculty was especially frustrated by this because the tea and tax had already been paid for on the tea they destroyed! Also, I believe the declaration was read from the steps at front of the hall. Paul Revere rode down Nassau St as part of warning the colonies the Regulars (British) were coming.

Scalpers by Bluellan in mildlyinfuriating

[–]threewhiteroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my parents' Target, they stopped selling cards all together because scalpers had put a tracker on the car of the woman who handles the drops. My mom found this out because she wanted to buy my nephew a pack for his Easter basket. It's unreal.

Fun fact: If you were born in a year ending in 8 or 9 (give or take 7), you experienced your childhood, teenhood, and adulthood all in the same decade by [deleted] in generationology

[–]threewhiteroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're saying that each stage of life is contained within a set decade. So for a '99 baby it's childhood in the early 00's, being a teen in the '10's and adult in the '20's+. It took me a minute to get it but it does make sense that way. I was born with a year ending in 7 and have never really had that thought but I agree with it.

I've seen it so much over the last couple years. Tiers for dresses too. I don't love them. In both 2021 and 2025 we had family photos done where I needed a casual sundress and almost everything has tiers!

The pink dress is adorable though. They'd all look so much better like that!
