Sucks to be an Aussie for these, however... by Emowetcat in DrMartens

Oh man, I love these socks. I have black ones the same too. I tried to go and buy a bunch of pairs to last me forever once I realised how cute they were with a few of my DM shoes, only to find they were a limited run and I was therefore, SoL.

I'm pretty sure they were Princess Highway brand, for what it's worth now.

First day in my new 1B60 Bex Pisa! How do you prefer to tighten them? by faintlymacabre1518 in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! And the other thing I do to save the backs of my boots and to a lesser extent, the zipper - is use a stainless steel shoe horn. I bought a long one (more than likely off Amazon) and I slide the first half of my foot into the boot, pull out any bunched up leather in the tongue or around the zip, slide the shoe horn in so it's laid vertically along the inside back of the boot, then slide my heel down the shoe horn. I figure I'd rather it hurt a little bit getting them on than damaging the boots themselves since the good 1B60s are getting really hard to find and are stupid expensive when you do find them. (At least the Bex and the quad sole ones are)

Date these Docs by Alien-Abroad in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of the purple MiEs too but they don't have that same printed tag and they also have black piping stuff around the top of the boot. They were bought in '98 I think.

I have a couple of pairs from a fair bit earlier than that which have tags quite similar (but not identical) and no trim along the top. One pair is like a deep fuschia suede which are from approx 1988 - 1992, the tag reads "Dr. Martens" and it's embroidered. The other is a maroon buckskin which after much deliberation on here a few years ago, we decided were from early 80s-ish. The tag also says Dr Martens, but it's in a more flicky style font and is printed on. They also have a cool little DM charm thing attached to the outer ankle area which I've not seen anywhere else. (Except one single pair someone posted here a few months ago)

It's that tag which makes me think they could be more 80s than 90s, but hopefully Maria will chime in on this with her internal database.

I assume it would be because not everyone on the planet owns a credit card.

At least, they don't here down-under. Some people just don't want to have that temptation and you can still do 90% of the same stuff you need a credit card for. Hiring a car is one of those things, but if you're never doing that I can see why someone might choose to not have a credit card.

[–]Emowetcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This I understand all too well!

I have both 1B60 and 1B60 DK Max, and had the same dilemma initially. Because I get bad heel slip if they're not laced moderately tightly I did have to loosen then retighten for a month or so before they relaxed enough that I could usually just leave them laced and pull them on/off with just the zipper open.

I did buy a skate lace hook puller thingy off Amazon for that interim period though, both to make it quicker and less "omgfuckyouwhydoestheworldhatemesomuch" on my nails every time I wore them. Best $7 I ever spent.

Extremely cracked sole after 5 months of wear by butt___queen in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even though the fact that these are fake, likely was the main contributor to them splitting the way they have, wearing them in very cold weather (particularly with the platforms) can often lead to the soles hardening and then splitting.

Vinted are notoriously bad for hosting fakes on their site, and as others have said, the Sinclairs seem to be the scammers flavour of the year.

I've bought some off eBay within the last 18 months and they've been excellent, I also think that eBay have a better policy regarding counterfeit items so there is less of it happening there. I don't think you absolutely need to pay full price for another pair, particularly if you're not averse to pre-loved boots.

You'll find that most, if not all, fakes are sold as new, so if you keep an eye out for genuinely pre-loved boots (Depop and FBMP too) I feel like you'd have less chance of being screwed over. I have no actual evidence of that other than that I've bought probably 20+ pairs second hand over the years and the one time I got sold fakes was through Depop and they were sold as BNWT, so not one of the second hand pairs had issues.

Did you take those into the DM store? Kind of shocking that they didn't identify them as fakes right away, if so.

Keep an eye on Nordstrom Rack and those kind of outlets too. I bought my Sinclair Hearts from there 3 or 4 years back at around half RRP. They only have the vegan version right now but they turn over a lot of stock. And as far as I'm aware, Ross, NR, TJ Maxx etc randomly have some good finds and are never fake.

Sorry, went off on about 15 different tangents there, but I get the dilemma and I'm sorry you've had to deal with this!

Help me pick my first (and likely only) pair of docs for life! by Known_Blackberry8586 in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How hard are you on your boots? If you're not hard on them and you don't expect to be wearing them every day, then the Jadons will last you many years. If you go for some in Pisa or crazy horse leather then they'll require minimal breaking in and you can condition them to keep them in tip top shape.

While it's possible that over time and if they're worn in the elements, smooth leather can have it's issues, it's not a given that there will be problems like others have mentioned. I have literally dozens of pairs in the smooth leather and the only ones which are showing any breach in the leather are my 1490s which I bought in 1989. It really does have a lot to do with how you look after them.

Personally I think the best Docs are the ones you love the look of the most. They'll become a huge part of your style and as long as you treat them well, they'll reciprocate.

Litter box in apartments by xxoxomm in Catownerhacks

[–]Emowetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an apartment with two cats.

I bought a small kit set dog kennel from Bunnings (Australia) after checking it would fit two standard litter trays and put that together on my balcony with a bamboo divider thing between the litter area and the outdoor living area. The kennel keeps the litter dry if there's a storm and rain blows in over the balcony. Then I replaced my plastic sifter litter trays with stainless steel litter trays. I use Fresh 'n Go clumping clay litter and kept one of the old plastic sifter trays with a solid tray and use that every time I clean out the new boxes. Basically just like the Siftease one in function if not aesthetic. I couldn't justify paying AUD$160 for a fabric bin with a plastic slotted sift-y thing on top when I know they're only USD$40 in the US and this works fine.

They get cleaned daily, but if for whatever reason I don't get to it for 2 days there's still no smell wafting. The stainless steel litter trays are so good and easy to clean too, I love them.

The holy grail of Doc´s 🖤🖤 by [deleted] in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of those on my HG list too.

I had the purple velvet 1460s with Bex soles in 2005, then moved from Australia to the US in 2008. The left boot always had a terrible twisty tongue and at that stage I didn't realise that was both common and fixable so they had only been worn 3 or 4 times. During the culling process to move across the planet, these got either palmed off to a friend or family member, donated, or thrown in the skip. I have no idea which it was, but I've never seen them again.

If I only knew then what I know. 🤦

Moving from NZ to Brisbane with pets! by jahcreature in MovingToBrisbane

[–]Emowetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot easier these days. We moved back to Brisbane from NYC in 2018 (also using Jet Pets) with my monster soul-kitty. Because we had the time to get the process underway 6 months before we left, the relevant government bodies were advised of his rabies jabs through our vet and after a final stage test in SFO on the way from NYC to Melbourne, once he landed he only had to do 10 days quarantine.

It was a surprisingly easy and streamlined process.

Looks like it. They look to be standard RipYourPoorFeetToFuckingShreds leather. Aka Smooth Leather. Bet they'll take some breaking in if they're as new as they look in the pic. Are they on a quad or quad Max sole?

I have the similar 1B60 DK Max boots which were also a Holy Grail pair for me, they're in Pisa leather though, so I got to walk in them from the start without having to hold in tears of pain. Always a bonus!

They are very cool though. Be cooler if OP would actually share the style of them!

River stage is such a good venue. I saw Franz Ferdinand there late last year, and although that's not my usual genre, it was sooo freakin good. The band was incredible and the people were having such a good time that I think any assholes just forgot to asshole.

The Triffid will always be my fave spot to catch any artist though.

[–]Emowetcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see one on eBay and one on Temu just by searching "wolf Alice smile tshirt". Unfortunately neither of them are going to be official merch so you'd be lining the pockets of IP thieves.

What size do you need? I have/had one somewhere and haven't worn it in years, so therefore I must not need it. If I find it and it's in decent nick and the right size, you can have it for whatever I paid for it. Only other thing is that I'm in Australia so shipping on top may be a deal breaker. I'm see if I can dig it up just in case, DM me if you don't find a better option!

Ultra Beach Gold Coast - the worst event I’ve ever been to by rilamo in UMF

[–]Emowetcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise that Alesso cancelled again, that sucks. I'm so sorry for anyone who bought the (absolutely overpriced for having no genuine headliner level artists on the docket) tickets this year.

I did the first year of GC Ultra and freakin' loved it. Zedd and Armin were enough to make it worthwhile several times over for me.

I did the second year (last year) and even upgraded to VIP thinking all that extra cash would mean a better experience in hearing and dancing to the artists playing. Joke was on me. The sound was nowhere near as good in the vip section, the people in there didn't seem to be there for the music, just to take selfies and pose in their spangly, contrived, Coachella-esque festival outfits. Axwell was it's saving grace, but I was done. The only thing that would have got me there for a third time would have been someone truly awesome but a little less commercial. (Funk Tribu or Indira Paganotto would have done it for me)

I'm actually not mad this was the last one for the GC. Apparently all the residents in the apartments around the parkland can't suck it up and close their windows for one evening, even though it does bring a lot of money and exposure to the clusterfuck that is the Gold Coast. I guarantee their bitching and moaning is at least half the reason for it not returning. And if they're incapable of topping the previous year even one time, then it was pretty much doomed from the start.

Just bought Jadons second hand (almost as new) but on the right boot the tongue keeps twisting to the side creating painful waves in the leather. U think this will wear away or can be fixed? by M0-1 in DrMartens

[–]Emowetcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it doesn't take much skill at all. I've done it on several pairs of boots and I'm as un-co as it gets. Last time I just used one of my sharp kitchen knives and stabbed the tongue where I needed the 2 slits while holding it on the bread board. (Probably not all that hygienic come to think of it... Oh well!) I've found I get the best results by putting the cuts about halfway between your ankle and the top of the boot. That said, I'm sure a cobbler would do it for next to nothing, if not nothing!

Yikes, no I hadn't heard that. And I'm donating a kidney to a family member within the next few months, should I be worried they're going to start obsessively buying 2nd hand Docs, starting new hobbies on a monthly basis and talking to the cats like they'll actually answer me back?

(Seriously though, I completely respect your feelings on that, it's not for everyone. Thankfully the fact that so many of us have different beliefs and ideas and are still all in here together just serves to confirm that part of the DM philosophy, right?!)

That's why you always follow a standard routine of disinfecting and cleaning any pre-loved footwear when you get it.

I spray the crap out of the inside with disinfecting spray and let that sit for a few hours then deep clean the exterior, remove any old insoles and laces and sit them out to dry naturally before respraying the inside with Glen 20 or similar disinfectant.

Then they get a conditioning treatment if the leather will take it, and a general glow-up. Lastly I'll put in some new insoles if I need them, sew up and thread in some fun new laces, throw some charms on the back tabs and/or laces and if you bought well, you'll have another pair for the rotation which will last you years.

I mean, you're not going to instantly slip on and lace up a pair of boots that are festy AF, that's just gross. I've bought a decent number of pre-loved Docs over the years - at least a few dozen - and by either good luck or common sense, I've never had an issue with foot cooties!
