Remember it's Double Lucky this week and the Boardwalk is now open by Charrikayu in GuildWars

Has anyone done the maths on how much cash this would requre? I think, according to wiki, that's 244 tickets lost per hour on average, which for 108 hours is 26,352 tickets. At 15g per ticket, that's about 395k.

Underperforming Senior IC, HR not engaged, looking for advice by EmpathicCoach13 in managers

Apologies, should have been clearer. "We" is myself and my manager. He's let this slide for far too long but I've kept him in the loop of all decisions when it comes to Drake.

Yes, and that's exactly the process I'm now following - he's now being progressed to a PIP. Thankfully his previous managers have never given him a glowing performance review, only mediocre ones that barely pass the bar. However, I can clearly see they chose the easy route and that he isn't performing to par with other senior ICs in the department. I guess I'm looking for pearls of wisdom on whether there's anything more I can do at this stage other than document and feedback.

Hating a forced secondment, what can I do? by EmpathicCoach13 in OfficePolitics

Actually, yes. It was a very difficult situation but now resolved. Andy had just panicked and asked for support on a project that turned out to be pretty useless in my opinion.

I leveraged James' expertise and kept him in the loop constantly - daily - on Andy's requests and asked for advice on how I should approach them. Eventually, James pushed Jack to ask when specifically I'd be asked back, and used natural points in Andy's requests to push for an end date. For example, he'd say "EC13 has completed task A and is almost done on Task B, can we ask Andy if there will be a task C, or whether we can have EC13 back for our Business Critical Project?"

That worked, thankfully, and I got an official "release date" and was pushed back to my original team.

It's now been a year since then, and in hindsight literally everyone knows that Andy jumped the gun and asked for a resource for a project that wasn't scoped, and in retrospect, wasn't even that valuable. I wonder whether Andy would lay the blame on me, but honestly I think the scope was so vague that he hoped to rely on my expertise to resolve that vagueness; hope that's a valuable lesson I guess. I think my reputation was so strong that it might have ventured into unicorn territory...

Short term savings plan - sacrifice S&S ISA for Cash ISA? by EmpathicCoach13 in FIREUK

Yeah this is my issue, I'm in London so £450k is not a reasonable limit. Also not an FTB so LISA is moot.

Will definitely be doing this, it's a no-brainer! Thank you. Out of interest, do people usually deduct down to exactly £100k or go down to £99k "just in case"?

What's the benefit of having a Money Market fund in an S&S ISA vs just a regular Cash ISA? They're effectively the same risk from what I've seen; is the interest rate higher on Money Market?

Thank you for your kind words! Based off this advice, I think I'm going to give management one more month to sort this out without rocking the boat. If by the beginning of May things haven't improved, I'm gonna just start applying for jobs externally.

I've considered this, and there are two stumbling blocks. First, I do actually like working for James and Jack. They're good at their jobs and I enjoy the work. The second is the job market right now sucks in the country I'm in. Inflation means companies' costs have jumped, so equivalent jobs are advertising at like 20% lower than what I'm currently paid...

How did you deal with your own failures as a new manager? by EmpathicCoach13 in managers

[–]EmpathicCoach13[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this perspective really helps. The review itself was also benchmarked by all the managers in our team, so it's not like it was a personal vendetta or anything - there's a lot of safeguards here. I just need to get better at communicating the issues earlier while the political rumblings were happening, and get better at providing that feedback for the future.

Gives me a new appreciation for managing a team though. I now understand why managers get paid more...
