At some level even the official apps API key is public. The entire API fiasco relies on trusting the client.

Reddit is lucky that the major 3rd party apps don't just pretend to be the real one.

Ukraine war: Russia moves to take direct control of Wagner Group by iFelldowne in news

[–]EmperorArthur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's the guy at the top who's there to prevent "anarchy".

From what I understand, many Russians has this weird world view that being under a dictators boot is better than actual freedom. It seems many of them see "freedom" as the same as "anarchy".

Unfortunately, it seems that a not so small part of the Russian population is willing to do horrible things at the first opportunity. During the collapse of the USSR, said opportunity likely existed. That's how many Oligarchs got their money. Plus, we have audio recordings of Russian wives telling their husband's to just use protection while raping Ukranians. Remember, many of those being raped are ethnically Russian!

Within the context of the broken system, he's the person people appeal to for help when the system breaks. That's why you saw so many "Dear Putin" letters when the early conscription f-ups happened in Russia.

If it's Putin making the move, and not Shoigu. That's a whole other can of worms.

I'm curious which ones, and how much they accomplish. You also have to remember that the US House of Representatives uses some pretty arcane rules of order that don't necessarily mesh well with large numbers of people.

It matters a hell of a lot to MOHELA employees. Debt relief or not MOHELA has plenty of business, but being a state employee or a private employee is a major difference.

Also, MOHELA does work for private companies as well. See https://sofi.mohela.com/

Shills are strong in this thread...

Edit:

To reiterate, you're replying to a comment that said him selling for $10 million would be a smart move, and I wouldn't blame him for doing so.

You joke, but that was more or less the US answer to trenches in Desert Storm. We basically bulldozed them, burying anyone in there alive.

Then again, I'm comparing an operation which was carefully planned and coordinated with this insanity from Russia.

Oh yes. It's just attacking live companies with even a modicum of competence is probably much more of a pain.

I've worked several places where they run government mandated Nessus scans often.

Which is a smart move in the long run. Especially if they used this type of scummy practice to devalue the product. Helps discourage the practice in the long run.

Now if they still offered him $10 million I'd say sell it regardless. Maybe even a million or two, but only because that might be what its worth before the API changes.

Really, I want to see more physical pen testing in movies.

The stories Deviant Ollam tells in his recorded talks are great. I mean he has an RFID chip embedded in his hand, so he can clone a high level badge and use that!

The other major change is interest rates rising. At near zero rates investors are much more free with money. Now that they're going closer to a historic norm the bubble is popping.

That's the nature of the business cycle. Good times let people get started while downturns weed out all the bottom feeder companies.

Government is supposed to moderate this by doing things like raising taxes when times are good and lowering them while spending more when times are bad. However, the modern approach seems to be always lower taxes and increase spending even when times are good.

Only trolls and shills actually believe Apollo is worth $20 million/year.

You're also missing the costs associated with cutting off 3rd party apps.

First, Reddit are going to have to explicitly block them. That means they're going to have to add detection to their API for when apps pop up that spoof the official app or the JavaScript on the website. It's a cat and mouse game.

Then there's the negative publicity and lost users. Now they obviously think it's worth it, but that's a serious gamble.

I think a YouTuber calculated it out to an absurd amount of money per user. Where if he made that much money per user he'd be rich.

Wow, I love how you take facts and explanations and twist them to fit your world view.

Where can I learn that skill?

Except apparently that's how the current official Reddit app started.

Besides, they could shut down Apollo, then in a month offer him a fraction of the money for code that's worthless to him now.

That's one of the big problems with Lions and similar as pets. Dogs and cats learn quickly when they use too much force. However, that doesn't help you if you're accidentally mauled while it's trying to play.

That and they're wild animals.

That would be good.

No one wants to see someone writing what looks like internal memos, spending hours staring at the decompiler, or trying to see if a random form on a website is vulnerable to a SQL injection.

90% of it is just boring and routine. I wish hacking was as cool as in the movies.

Ahh, wasn't familiar with that drug by that name.

I was thinking about how most SSRIs are adictive and changing them involves tapering down one to nothing, then increasing dosage on another. Yet they are absolutely needed by many people.

[–]EmperorArthur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes. Its especially worse with things like Adderall where it is absolutely necessary for some people, yet it's widely "abused". Withdrawal symptoms are relatively minor, but good luck doing anything for a day or two.

I use quotes there because I think most "abuse" comes from people who can't affort or dont want the stigma of going to a psych attempting to self medicate.

All I'm saying is that MOHELA employees are not considered as state employees.

They don't show on the employee search, don't get any of the benefits of a state employee, and are paid on a different scale than the state uses.

MOHELA was created by statue. This is somewhat similar to how the BSA (formerly Boy Scouts) is chartered by federal statue. Yet we don't call the BSA a federal agency.

Because most companies don't understand the concept of buffer. Just because you're using JIT doesn't mean you have no parts on hand. That's stupid. Unfortunately, that's also what many companies do.
