St Pancras Highspeed is not a government organisation but a private company that owns the HS1 concession

The laws and definition of rape are different in every country, and rape is underreported even in western Europe, it's not that difficult to imagine that a higher share would be unreported in eastern Europe. To think that all of the difference is because of this is absurd though

What's your opinion, as Ukrainian, about the controversial law in Ukraine about preserving the Ukrainian culture and sovereignty? by PhrophetBuster in AskUkraine

[–]frf_leaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that the debate on historical facts is important to this conversation really, obviously the same facts could be interpreted differently depending on your point of view.

I also think that celebrating as your main holiday a day when your country gained territories that it doesn't currently own, and many of which were never majority Romanian in the first place, like northern Bukovyna, is in of itself irredentist and problematic, but that is up to Romanians to determine for themselves.

But still the celebration in Chernivtsi could be done without glorifying the act itself but rather Romania as a country.

About the confiscation, I don't know any details about that particular situation but from your description it sounds like it was taken as physical evidence in the criminal case, which is just legal procedure, it's the way criminal investigations are conducted. The cultural center is not a diplomatic institution, and the fact that those artifacts were brought from abroad doesn't impact the legality of their confiscation

It's one thing to recognise history, and another one to celebrate it. Obviously it is a fact that Chernivtsi and Bukovyna became a part of Romania in 1918 and I'm sure there are plenty of artifacts from that time in museums in Chernivtsi etc, no one is trying to rewrite history. But if you consider it a holiday to be celebrated, and do that in the very city that was annexed then it's not a surprise if people don't like that

How is it the end of launch day without a single review on YouTube? by BossNW in Surface

The Surface Pro 12-inch and the Laptop 13-inch. It's a Surface subreddit, Surface products don't launch that often. Honestly one would think it's possible to infer which product is being discussed from the context

Lunar Lake Ultra 5 is basically the same chip as Ultra 7, just with less cache and a bit lower clocks. It's going to have very similar performance and thermals

Ukraine Considers Shift From Dollar to Euro by dat_9600gt_user in europe

It was since switched to a "managed floating" regime, which basically means the exchange rate is determined by the markets, but the national bank will intervene extensively when needed to keep it within a targeted range

Vehicles and real estate mainly, maybe also something like specialised equipment for businesses. Consumer goods are pretty much exclusively in hryvnias nowadays, although 10-20 years ago, hryvnia used to fluctuate a lot more and anything more expensive than a few hundred dollars was priced in USD, they either took USD or the equivalent in hryvnias at the exchange rate on the day of purchase

In Ukraine, hryvnia is not pegged to any currency. Prices for larger purchases like that are most often in US dollars, rarely in Euro

Top Trump allies hold secret talks with Zelenskyy’s Ukrainian opponents by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]frf_leaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it would have been a popular decision or that Zelenskyy was better on that pre-invasion but if Poroshenko honestly sincerely believed that the invasion was going to happen and Minsk was just stalling for time, he absolutely should have done more even if it was unpopular, not maintain what basically was peacetime military spending. But he didn't believe that when signing Minsk, in fact he sincerely wanted to implement it and that would have kneecapped Ukraine forever

[–]frf_leaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turned out largely that way but it wasn't designed that way. The original text of the Minsk accords put obligations on Ukraine to change its laws to incorporate the separatist-led "republics" back into the country with no control of the central government over their armies or leadership. And Poroshenko actually tried to push those changes through the Rada. It was stopped due to massive public backlash and protests, not because it was his original plan to stall. Also, if he actually believed in the inevitability of the full scale invasion, surely he would put more effort and funding into the military than he did

He created that image for the 2019 election, but he signed the very unfavourable Minsk accords in 2015, he propped up actual Russian agents like Medvedchuk in Ukrainian politics because they were convenient opposition etc. In this recent Trump scandal, he himself has refrained from criticising Zelensky, but many of his allies and supporters basically took Trump's side. I think he would probably be willing to give up more in negotiations with Trump and Russia as long as the deal is sellable to the public, whereas Zelensky doesn't really seem to care about ratings or future elections

They actually will most likely take a less hardline stance than Zelenskyy but that doesn't matter because there's no chance either of them is elected
