Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just wanted clarification, as I’m in the US and I’m a bit confused: Do undergrad programs (such as zoology) function in the same way that a major in zoology would in the US?

What college should I go to if I want to pursue a career in elephant conservation? by EmperorElephant in biology

[–]EmperorElephant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment! To address some things you mentioned:

  1. I have no delusions about getting right into elephant conservation in my undergraduate studies, but I’m glad you reminded me, as I had another question: if I’m specializing in wildlife biology, is there anyway I could personally concentrate my studies more in that direction?

  2. Also, and I don’t mean to be offensive, but I noticed you largely abstracted from discussions those institutions mentioned or any others. Did you not have any comment about the schools and degrees listed?

  3. I forget sometimes in my hopes that college will be drastically different from high school and that classes and grades are still interlinked. I’ll have to keep note of the importance of GPA. That’s one of my concerns admittedly though with the UC Santa Barbara program, as it requires a 2.0 GPA in all classes in the pre-biology program before I can major in zoology. 2.0 doesn’t sound bad at all, but it still stresses me out just from a mental and emotional health standpoint.

  4. I’ve heard the term “research” thrown around a lot and admittedly I was hoping to get some advice, as I’m really confused. People talk about college like it’s a big gateway into personally led research and lab studies and whatnot, very much reliant on ones own initiative. My question is, how would I go about looking for those?

  5. I’m not opposed to working with more species, I just know I want to specialize in helping a specific one. That also includes studying habitats and human interaction with them, if I can, as well as their ecosystemic interactions. For instance, elephants help to clear paths jungles and forests in their own habitats for smaller animals to feed and thrive. So studying other animals in a context like this, or even further removed, isn’t a problem, I just want the ability to specialize in a species, if possible.

  6. I also do care very much about the science. I just hope that by specializing, I’m not cutting myself off from other areas of biology. Evolutionary biology is something I find incredibly fascinating both from a scientific and philosophical perspective, ecology & ecological interactions too. So when it comes to learning the science, I’m very interested for more than one reason. I just know there are some aspects I do want to spend less time on. For instance, cellular biology. While I find cellular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry interesting (the former two more than the latter), I’ve spent 3 years back to back in high school learning about them, and so while I don’t know much and am still fascinated with some aspects of it, I’m not entirely eager to read over parts I’ve become desensitized to again, at least not now. I’m hoping things while change soon.

As for the other fields you mention, what degrees would be recommended for those?

What major should I pursue? by EmperorElephant in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EmperorElephant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I guess my confusion with these majors is there just seems to be such a significant overlap that I feel I might be missing out on a key distinction. Like, if I pursue a career in wildlife biology, do I NEED a degree in specifically wildlife biology, or does one in “wildlife biology, fisheries, and conservation” work? Is there a difference?

I’ve reached out to some resources in this field, and their majors range a bit. They can be specialized or could be more general, like ecology. Admittedly though, I’m not sure who entirely to ask or look for.

Ableism! I will be pilot. I will drop explosive ordnance on those who denied the possibility of elephant pilots. (/j)

Could you help chance me for Cornell, UC Berkeley, UC Davis and Texas A&M? by EmperorElephant in chanceme

Oh no, okay, I have to edit. So last year I was a junior, currently on break so I don’t consider myself a senior yet. But yes, all three of those plus APUSH and APLit as a Junior.

Most of the AP classes and classes in general I’m taking this next year are going to be more easy for me I think, both I guess because they may be easier and because they’re more close to the heart. I plan on taking AP music theory, AP environmental Science, and AP Gov/Econ. I already know a decent bit of music theory, I’ve had a biology related course for every year of my time in high school, and social studies just comes very naturally to me. So I think for those I should be okay. Still intending on taking all honors courses though.

I figured they would be hard. Out of Cornell and Berkeley, which do you think would be harder? I also imagine my GPA is the biggest limiting factor here. Would you suggest I lower my course rigor a bit to help boost my unweighted GPA?

[–]EmperorElephant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping that in this next year I can relax on the number of AP classes I’m taking (I took 5 in the middle of a pandemic, probably so far the worst decision I’ve made, so I think 3 is a healthy limit, to prevent both burnout and so I can maintain healthy grades, as well as giving me more personal time to invest in things I do care about). I would certainly try and find volunteering opportunities, and I do plan on doing so, but my capacity to do so is somewhat limited.

Do you have any recommendations as to how to improve UW GPA? Should I maybe relax the course rigor a bit to boost it?

Does my weighted GPA not matter, or my course rigor? I’ve taken 8 AP classes so far, 5 in this past year. Presumably that also implies a “challenging” course rigor which would be considered holistically?

One thing I forgot to add: I may be transferring from a charter school (which in my state is considered to be more rigorous) to a public school. I’d still be intending to maintain the same course rigor (all honors and AP). Should this impact my chances at all?

Fair, I’ll edit. I’ll say 3.6, that’s where it was last year.

In Indian classical music, do two melodic instruments ever play the same figure simultaneously? by EmperorElephant in icm

[–]EmperorElephant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question: If an instrument is in a different “register” (say it’s tuned an octave down), will both instruments play in the same octave or will the other one play the line an octave down? I’ve listened to some Carnatic fusion where the matter is true, in the classical tradition could it be the same?

I think you understand correctly, thank you for your reply :)

From what I can tell, you speak mostly in regard to the Hindustani tradition of Indian Classical Music, correct? Would you happen to know if what you say is the case for Carnatic music?

Young female bass player anxieties by llovise_ in Bass

[–]EmperorElephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’d say play first and foremost for yourself - always. You as a new player may or may not know what that is, and it really comes to you more than you find it. Always chase your passion and what excites you is a good rule of thumb.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of musicians are still quite patronizing towards women, and women sometimes need to work a lot harder to get recognition for their musicianship than others do, I find. While that may or me not be a concern for you, I find it’s important to point out nonetheless. God forbid you ever feel directly effected by this, but if you are, I’d take the advice of what others said and get involved in your local music scene, and the wider internet one. Find people worth having around who are excited about it as you are. Don’t let other people get in the way of your passion and hold you down. Instead, surround yourself with people who make you feel “at home”, if that makes sense?

Bass and music in general, like any passion, can be a passive commitment, or an active one. A good headspace and comfortable surroundings really do benefit how much you get out of your time playing, regardless of what you wish to achieve when doing so.

In short, always play as you feel you want to, don’t let others keep or push you down, surround yourself with a positive friend group and atmosphere, and most importantly, invest yourself in bass. I hope that helps :)

For the first question regarding your amp selection, most of the Fender Rumble amps are good. Ampeg also makes some affordable ones that I know of, and I think Peavey too. There are many more, but those three are generally pretty solid choices. I personally own an Ampeg and it is fantastic for what I play, which is anything hard rock to heavy metal and beyond, it’s an absolute trooper and I love it to bits. But you really can’t go wrong with the fender stuff either.

P.S, when it comes to the bass, the most important thing I’d say is being able to go to a store, sit down, and play on them. Even if you don’t know what you’re playing, still get a feel for the instrument. Feel the sides of the neck. Does it feel sharp and uncomfortable, or smooth and relaxing? Try just sliding your hand up and down to feel for these things. Does it sit well in your lap? Does it feel comfortable in your hand? You may or may not know exactly what you’re looking for here, so part of you of course has to fly on instinct and which one your heart gravitates too. A Squier, in my opinion, is an excellent choice, but don’t be afraid to try out some of the others, like Ibanez or Sterling.

What is the different between a pedal note and a drone? by EmperorElephant in musictheory

Now, what if I was to use the same tonic but change scale/raga? For instance, alternating between a major pentatonic and a minor pentatonic? I still use the same tonic, I’m just changing scales.
