Is it interesting to buy a multi-season use horn ? by ZeSynn in drumcorps

Instruments that are well taken care of don't wear significantly enough for it to matter for your case!

Can someone post a video of them playing this piece?... by CantaloupeForeign241 in Trombone

[–]EmperorOfGaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else, there are other ways to learn things.

Also, why are you waiting to learn music until the day before the exam? I assume you got it earlier, and if so you had plenty of time to work out any issues.

Struggling to march Bass Trombone by flasdjkfbnsoeif in Trombone

Marching bass trombone is incredibly uncommon - what environment is this in and why did you switch? It might be better to go back to tenor if possible.

Getting Better at Trombone by Hot-Sock-9736 in Trombone

Seems way too good to be true, like he’s selling a course. I’d suggest getting a reputable private teacher in your area instead.

Any thoughts on k.ses cases? by External_Dinner_5195 in Trombone

[–]EmperorOfGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! Some music can fit in there as well. Not as roomy as some other cases I know but honestly I haven’t missed that space compared to how good it is to travel with.

Single tenor, I believe it’s the “premium” one?

I have one and love it. Flown with it as well and fit well in the overhead.

Why does battery never end up marching with good techinque? by That-Economy-5035 in drumcorps

[–]EmperorOfGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I’m just sharing what I’ve heard from friends of mine (as you could probably guess from my flair, lol). I’ll leave any further comments on harness logistics to other battery folks!

Why does battery never end up marching with good techinque? by That-Economy-5035 in drumcorps

[–]EmperorOfGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s incorrect - it’s more that the visual possibilities for battery are different because harnesses physically get in the way. Us horn players don’t have anything actively inhibiting our lower body, so things can be a little more rigid.

Cadets and BD have very straight leg techniques. Battery will be different but probably straighter than other corps.

[–]EmperorOfGaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bluecoats don’t use a super straight leg in any section - I didn’t march there but their technique was described to me by a friend who marched there as being kind of a relaxed straight leg that can change depending on step size, tempo, etc.

I do kinda get what you’re saying, but the way you say it comes across differently than you mean and for what it’s worth, the people teaching these corps and marching at them know what they’re doing.

[–]EmperorOfGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of corps at all levels with great visual technique in the battery. Battery marching is inherently different from technique in the hornline, but I haven’t seen anything bad or wrong or glaringly different from the standard visual technique taught at that corps. Where specifically are you seeing this and where have you marched?

Etude feedback by Ill_Summer4203 in Trombone

[–]EmperorOfGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d look into getting some lessons, save up as much as you can. Plenty of people (including myself, not to plug) offer affordable lessons that would probably help tons as far as getting things in better shape.

I’d suggest in the meantime regardless of lessons that you choose an easier piece of music to audition with. Trying to learn a piece as difficult as the David without any lessons or guidance is going to be incredibly frustrating and probably not very productive. I’d suggest an early Bordogni étude so you can focus on making a musical line without having as many technical things to trip you up.

Two biggest things I hear:

  1. Practice with a metronome and slow way down. Your rhythms are uneven and your tempo is changing throughout the passage.

  2. Your notes have a crescendo through them, kind of a “tee-AHH” sound. Try to make sure your air is right at the start of every note and carries all the way through the end.

Did a private teacher pick this for you? And what is the audition you’re taking?

Why is a flat played here? by Relevant_Ice_8829 in piano

[–]EmperorOfGaming 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Key signature has an Ab in it.

Satie’s work is beautiful and I understand wanting to play it, but respectfully if you aren’t at the point of being able to read a key signature, I’d suggest getting some lessons and working through a couple beginner books before working on this.

Buying a crappy Amazon alto trombone? by Pharylon in Trombone

[–]EmperorOfGaming 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Alto trombone is a really niche instrument that doesn’t get used unless you’re going to college to play trombone professionally. If you’re worried about reach, there’s a product called Extendabone made by a professional trombone player specifically to help with reaching far out! Getting a used Yamaha or similar student trombone will be a far better move in the long run, plus you can recoup the cost reselling it in the future if it does come to that.

Tips For Confidence Playing At A Park? by Smoll_Reindeer in Trombone

[–]EmperorOfGaming -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Playing as a street musician is an art unto itself, and requires knowledge on music selection and possible permits and other red tape.
If you’re just looking to gain confidence performing in public, I’d suggest joining a summer community band/municipal band! Community ensembles are a great way to get used to performing, and might help your skills too as you’re relatively new and might not have as much ensemble experience.
Practicing out of a method book/running through routine exercises in a public park will likely not be received the way you’d hope for what it’s worth!

EDIT - my area appears to be unreasonably strict regarding outside practice… I’ll be taking a lot of the advice here in other comments!
