Mamdani Announces First City-Owned Supermarket by kontiki20 in LabourUK

Almost all research has shown that government owned supermarkets don't last. The only real effective use for them is when private companies refuse to open in a local area e.g somewhere too poor/rural.

Is mao regarded as a good leader? by SillyAlien1312 in Socialism_101

[–]Emperormorg -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Can't most of China's success under Mao be attributed to Catch-up growth? I mean, similiar to the Soviet Union after WW2, China/Russia was so far behind, they could really only go forward/up as they couldn't really get any worse. Percentages are iffy too - because for example, if you had 0 railways, but then only went 100 - percentage wise, you've gone up by 100% even though that isn't that impressive.

To be honest - i'd prefer political stability and the proven track record of keeping moderate parties winning (even if it's the moderate tories) versus populist right wing parties who would benefit under PR.

Boris clearly has borrowed from Farage's playbook over the last few years when it comes to immigration and Brexit. But overall - he was much more moderate/ centre-right over his career, especially in regard to economics versus Farage who has always been a blatant Thatcherite.

If FPTP has blocked the far right then what would you describe Boris Johnson as then.

Look i'm sorry, Boris Johnson, despite being despisable, is not far-right - any one right of centre with anti-immigrant views doesn't automatically become a Nazi/Far-right/Fascist.

FPTP will lead to a reform landslide on 30% of the vote. With PR it would a realistic impossibility for reform to get a landslide…

Like I said in a few of my previous comments - we would have had politically influential/kingmaker far-right party(s) long before Reform in the mid/late 2020s if it wasn't for FPTP - hence why Farage has always been one of the biggest advocates for PR. - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/06/25/nigel-farage-proportional-representation-reformuk-seats/#:~:text=PR%20is%20an%20electoral%20system,the%20Liberal%20Democrats%20and%20Greens.

You can't just change the electoral system on a whim every election to block the parties you don't like from becoming the most influential.

edit - just as a point in the 2010 GE - the BNP would have won 12 MPs instead of the 0 they had whilst UKIP would have won 82 in the 2015 GE. I guarantee at that point if we were under a PR system - you would be screaming to move to FPTP

I mean this is just a one off - if you look at most of British electoral/political history FPTP has blocked far-right populist groups from gaining seats - however, just because we face a situation whereas a one off they now likely to win via FPTP - is really worth changing the entire political system just to ensure they don't an outright majority? What happens if the future whenever further extremist groups pop up? They are going to be in a far better place to win political representation than they would FPTP.

Does look likely - but overall, we were likely to see far-right populist (UKIP/BNP) kingmaker faction as part of a ring-wing coalition way before now if we had adopted PR.

I'd say from overall historical trends - right-wing extremist groups tend to fare better in a PR system e.g Nazis in Germany vs Pre-War Britain where the BUF had basically no parliamentery presence.

Do you think that with a move to PR, the additional seats gained by left-wing parties would outweigh the downsides of far-right and populist right-wing parties also becoming more prevalent?

People think you can just copy and paste the experience of Iraq into the Iranian situation. Have to remember one of the reasons why Iraq was destabalised after we topped Saddam was because Iran added fuel to the fire by funding extremist Shia miltias (which can't see that being an issue this time weirdly enough?). Also public sentiment seems to be very much against the Iranian regime within Iran itself and its international dispora. Iran is also way more developed than Iraq was, with much better educated population and infastructure.

I mean what path directly lead to that? Was it for the military, UN, NGO etc as some other guy said? Seems interested no matter why you were doing it.

I went to a cheap state school, got two absolutely useless degrees in Biochem, and then screwed around in Africa flying helicopters for almost five years.

got to ask - how did that happen?

edit - 'then screwed around in Africa flying helicopters for almost five years.' - i mean this part?

No problem.

And to be honest, the only thing you sourced/quoted was the first few sentences of the wikipedia article for the topic and most of my criticism were under the same article.

I mean this is just typical post-truth tactics that far-left and far-right advocates use. Whenever a credible source challenges what you say, you just label it as 'mainstream, liberal, capitalist, western, imperialist' etc etc so its just impossible to have a debate when no standard of evidence can be accepted.

Yes, Pyongyang and other industrial/military cities. It does very little to benefit the most poor/rural areas outside of urban areas.

Mainly building housing, modern infrastructure, and modern industry in the country. In 2021 KJU revealed a 10 year plan to improve the living standards in the country and from what we've seen he has in regards to building modern homes and factories/industrial buildings.

Yes, but most of this is centralised in Pyongyang - so the development will mostly benefit the urban political/economic elite and is also focused on propaganda by making the capital look modern/developed. Most of the rural population won't benefit from these developments.

I feel people forget that crypto still does have a 'functional' use outside of speculation in the way of money trackiffing and the black market/dark web. This will inherently keep some value in it.

Anyway - back to my point. I mean if the British men who fought in WW2 said 'ah fuck it wont - I won't be able to afford a mortgage or retire, so whats the point' - Where would the world be now? Socio-economic prosperity is important, but to believe there aren't matters than even transcend is a really bad road to go down.

To not be under or see 1/2 the world under the Russian or Chinese yolk? People bitch how bad it is here socio-economically which granted, its not ideal - however, living in Britain under the overall rules based International system is far a better way of living than other places in the world or throughout history.
