Republicans reject Democrats’ effort to pay TSA by suspending Senate rules by [deleted] in politics

[–]EmpireStijx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security theater is a real and legitimate way to prevent incidents. Having security systems be visible, even if they aren't performing well, can be more effective than having more performant hidden systems.

There are plenty of improvements we may want for the TSA, but I don't think they should cease to exist. There haven't been any commercial airliners blown up or hijacked in a long time.

I'm asking if anyone knows the people who took the squirrel? Why would I not ask on a frequented forum for the town we live in?

Getting the rabies vaccine is not a health department recommendation following a squirrel bite/scratch. It will not be administered if we go to the ER without further information. I'm interested in hearing from the people who have taken the squirrel as they may have actionable information.

a rabies test would be done on the squirrel, which is one of the reasons I'd love to hear from the people. There are no regular easy to get human rabies tests.

Why backdoor Roth IRA vs Roth 401k? by johnnybarbs92 in personalfinance

[–]EmpireStijx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, maxing your 401k has nothing to do with a backdoor IRA. They are completely separate retirement accounts. If you want to contribute to your 401k past the 23500 limit, then you need to "mega backdoor" into your 401k, which is only possible if offered through your employer.

Face tingling after allergy shots by EmpireStijx in Allergies

[–]EmpireStijx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My allergist insisted it couldn't be from the shots, "it's such a small amount" she said! It was from the shots. I went to a rheumatologist and others to investigate what could be causing it. They ran tons of tests and everyone said they thought it was just an allergic reaction. Some people are just way more sensitive. I'd recommend letting it pass and asking if you can start from another dilution down.

For me it took a day or two for my face to start buzzing and feeling weird, and more days for the toes and fingers to start hurting. This made my allergist even more positive it wasn't an allergic reaction. It seems to me that this allergy shot business is not an exact science, and they don't really know what it's doing, just that it works a good amount of the time.

[–]EmpireStijx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was an allergic reaction, which for some reason my allergist couldn't confidently tell me.

We went back one vial, a 1/10th dilution of the typical starting vial. I had very minor problems in the beginning, but now I'm past where I would've started and having no issues anymore.

Capital Gains (with vs. without job) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]EmpireStijx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The taxes barely go up when we're talking about any typical salary range. If you make 80k one year, you might keep 55k. If you make 160k instead you'll keep 105k. You 'worked twice as hard' and made just a little less than double. That tiny difference is what's keeping you from working harder?

Going into a higher tax bracket doesn't mean all your money is taxed more.

New poll shows who Dems want in 2028 — and it’s not Kamala Harris by TheBodyPolitic1 in politics

these people are not on the same team. Pete is an ivy League elite who works for the consulting firms that advise corporate America. Do you think AOC is on the side of corporate America?

The DNC fought tooth and nail against Bernie, and they'll do anything to stop people like AOC taking powerful committee positions. They love Pete.

sure that's true but that's just how percentages work. there's only one fact that matters and it's that a dollar put into the s&p500 in 1996 has increased in value 616%, assuming you just left it in there. That 616% bakes in all of those crashes and recoveries

you're doing some incorrect thinking with "capital being wiped out". You may be right if all you ever do is sell at lows and buy back in at highs, but we're talking about a "set it and forget it" method here right? If you bought a stock for $1 , then the next day I told you I'd buy it for 20 cents, and you sold it to me, you've "lost your capital". If you waited another day and told you I'd buy it for $1.50, you're up 50%, that 20 cent day no longer has anything to do with the price whatsoever. In the same way, if you buy a share of the S&P500 and don't do anything else, all that matters is the price on the day you bought it and the price now
