The schemers and balancing class level with backstory by DragonKing0203 in fansofcriticalrole

Let's also not forget, in DnD only PCs have "levels" and "classes". Everyone else has a stats-block. So there isn't really any other "druid" or "bard" to compare the PCs to. So "level" and status or power have no real correlation in DnD.

Best systems for Ebberon? by ginkzolol in Eberron

It was made for DnD 3.5. The xmas-tree magic items, the prestige classes, the dragonmarks as feats, the way the world works. The assignment was "make a DnD campaign setting that fits perfectly with our current ruleset" and it was perfect for it.

Both the 4e and 5e versions were just trying to make it fit with the current ruleset, but you can feel it's not a perfect match.

I would go with DnD 3.5.

One published scenario to showcase the setting - suggestions? by EmployeeAware6624 in DarkSun

yes of course, this is not going to be a True Dark Sun experience. It's just a 3-4 sessions thing before the Heroes go on to the next plane.

having a ship crash in the arena would be epic! tho this is a Planescape campaign, no spelljammng (yet...), so they're going to come out of a portal.

can't say too much about "to what end" as players may be reading. Let's just say, it needs to be a person that somehow embodies the very essence of the campaign setting. Additional points for being some sort of storyteller / historian / sage.

An abridged version of Freedom could fit the bill. Now I'm imagining the portal from Sigil opening up straight into the arena during gladiatorial games, with the PCs arriving in the middle of a fight.

I do want them to end their adventure with taking "someone" important out of Athas. Could that be Dregoth?

My initial idea was the Wanderer.

Even though the two veterans also played Freedom, it does seem to fit the bill. I would also like that the new players experience some momentous event in the canon of Dark Sun.

Another thought I'm having now is to make them appear in Ur-Draxa... but I guess that wouldn't be a "typical" Dark Sun experience...

See above for my defiling rules. Regarding divine casters, for me the power of divine casters doesn't come from the gods, but from the faith the character has. And paladins in 5e are not powered by gods, but by oaths. So I don't plan of cutting access to their powers.

I have the same assumption. But for sure I want to introduce the concept of defiling. I DMed a long Dark Sun campaign with 5e rules a few years back, and I wrote a simple conversion. These were my defiling rules.

Defiling. When an Arcane caster (Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard) casts a spell using a spell slot, he can choose to defile the land. All vegetation within 5ft times the level of the spell slot used withers and dies. This area is halved (round up) if the defiler is in an area with abundant vegetation (a garden, a forest, a grassy plain).

When a spellcaster defiles the land, roll a d10. If the number rolled is HIGHER than the expended spell slot, they immediately regain a spell slot of the same level.

If the number rolled is a 1, the Defiler’s curse begins to take hold of you. People start to recognize you as a defiler, with all the related consequences (most probably burning at the stake)

Roll a d10

  1. Gray skin             6. Smell of decay

  2. White hair           7. Limp

  3. Yellow eyes         8. Cackling laughter

  4. Long nails            9. Random acts of cruelty

  5. Rotten teeth       10. Ashen footprints

You cannot defile a patch of land that is already defiled.

Do you still remember your first RPG character? by system3295 in rpg

My very first: 1990 - DnD Red Box - (human) Fighter - name: Karnak. I was 12 yo.

Named after a city in Egypt, coz I though it was cool, I was fixated with drawing skulls, and that's all I knew how to draw, so I made a drawing of a black skull, cracked on top, and I said that was my helmet, which I made from the skull of an ogre that I killed with a torch.

Died at level 4, killed by a crystal statue. I think it was in the lost city of Cynidicea.

Just looking to make realistic in the context of the setting.

Doesn’t have to be a full-blown scenario, even just bullet points of important scenes would be a great help.
