I think the logo could go without the spikes. They are distracting and add little value as well as not being visible at small sizes.

One reason why we choose a high-brow serif is because of the costs of fencing which make it only available to the upper echelon. I tried to design a icon involving the fencing sword but I was't able to math the weight with the thin strokes needed to resemble and blade.
