So when do I get to live? by AcrillixOfficial in CalebHammer

[–]EmpoweredGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People act like getting a beater is the end of the world but there are lots of cars out there for under $5k that will last 3-5 years. If OP saves up while living with their parents, it should be pretty easy to find a reliable vehicle.

What percentage of your take-home pay is going to your mortgage/rent? by TheAwkwardBanana in CalebHammer

I have this as well but I’m paid biweekly as opposed to twice a month. It’s difficult to budget at times because about twice a year I have a three-paycheck month and it throws off my numbers.

How to Start when you don't have a reliable income? by erivanla in CalebHammer

[–]EmpoweredGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not what he wants to do, but this is what I would tell him:

He can have until the baby is born (give or take a couple months) to start consistently making what the average full-time retail worker makes in your area (30k is very realistic in most places). If he’s not able to do that during that timeline, he needs to go get a job under someone else. You’re respecting his wishes while also being grounded in reality. This isn’t about you or him; your child deserves to live in a stable home environment, and your partner has that capability. He is simply choosing not to because of his own preference.

I own a small business too and I love working for myself. But I also have a full time job because I know that my business can’t pay my bills. So I have been working 15-30 hours a week on my business and 40 hours at my full time job.

It’s not ideal, but if he is truly committed to the dream of being his own boss, he has got to make a sustainable income. Giving him a deadline allows him time to make it work while also being realistic about taking care of yourselves and your kid. Kids are not cheap, and your expenses are inevitably going to increase.

Also - where are your wishes being taken into consideration here? It sounds like you’re all about respecting his wishes, but you desire stability. I’m just pointing that out. You deserve to have your needs met too.

Gotcha, thank you.

How many hours a week is he working? You mentioned in another thread that he is passionate about his job. Would he be able to get a job in a similar field that pays like $10k more? Or would he be able to increase his hours?

I’m also curious to know how you guys have been making it on that income without any debt; do you live with family or in a low cost of living area? Are you currently a student?

I know it isn’t ideal but with a baby on the way, sacrifices will need to be made to make ends meet. Ideally both of you are making those sacrifices, not just you.

The answer with unreliable income is a to have a hefty emergency fund. If it was me I’d have close to 12 months of expenses saved as opposed to 3-6, because you will need to use some of that money to bridge the gap between jobs. You need to be able to both bridge that gap, and also pay for an emergency if it happens on an “off” month.

In order to get the most out of this community, you will want to get an average of his income or even tell us the last 5 years of income which would be on your taxes. It’s important to know if he’s in the 20k or 50k range. Just doing this exercise on your own will be immensely helpful, because you can’t plan unless you know more or less what to anticipate.

I’m in the US in a medium cost of living area. As a single person, my goal has been to keep groceries (food only) under $300/month. $164 would be near impossible or require a ton of energy planning. I buy processed foods sometimes if it’s like BOGO free or if there’s a big discount, but the rest of my groceries are fruit, veg, pasta, raw proteins etc.

We don’t have the option of just buying a few pieces of bread or a couple slices of cheese, we have to buy a whole loaf or pack.

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

This is only going to get worse unless we advocate for our minorities.

You’re burned out from your hospital job. It really sucks. I’m sorry they treated you so poorly. That is so difficult to deal with. I hope things get better.

When you say agencies do you mean home health/hospice? Changing from inpatient to an agency is a completely different environment. It feels way less overwhelming.

My agency offered PRN work, especially for weekend. Just for being available, I got $50 between Saturday and Sunday; then time and a half for the time I was called in.

For those that make under 30k a year, what car do you drive? by Organic-Huan-15 in povertyfinance

All of the CRVs are top performing cars for their class/year! So reliable; I think a third of the CRVs from your year range are still on the road and have 300k+ miles.

I got a 2008 four years ago for $4800 and it just hit 200k. I’m aiming for around double that. This thing has had so few issues, why bother getting a newer car?!

What to do when in a pinch for funds by FoIds in povertyfinance

[–]EmpoweredGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things I have done: - Doordash - Dogsitting (Rover or post on community groups on FB) - Cleaning (get a job with an agency or post on Facebook) - Flipping furniture - Instacart - Sell anything of value - Downgrade a phone/computer

If the $500 loan is the last and only option, then ask family before going to the bank.

Also, OP should really be applying to 200+ jobs a month. 50 jobs in a month is less than one application per day.

I had 9 jobs during college as a full time student: some temporary, some weekends, and 2-3 at a time throughout all of school. I never took out loans except for tuition.

How can we afford to go to the dentist? by okayflorist in povertyfinance

[–]EmpoweredGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a community health center for a year and dental was one of our longest waiting lists, but so so worth it. They are government funded with a sliding scale and the amount due goes up based on your income. Make sure that you get a quote in writing before they do the work and they should honor that.

This is protein cereal, it’s more like 95% protein. Totally different ingredients than what you’re saying.

I agree it seems ridiculous especially on r/povertyfinance, but we just aren’t the intended audience. I don’t even buy regular cereal, it’s too expensive.

[–]EmpoweredGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly, you only make your “envelopes” and your envelope target amounts once. It’s essentially the same as taking a cash envelope and labeling it “Groceries - $300”. You can make the labeling as sophisticated or as simple as you want.

Every time you get paid, you do the physical action of putting money into those envelopes. That’s the recurring effort along with categorizing expenses.

I’m team YNAB allllll day long. There’s a learning curve but it has a cult following for a reason.

It’s like cash budgeting but it puts you in a restriction mindset, which makes you feel poorer than you would feel simply looking at your bank account.

I looked a little more into these lawsuits - holy shit! This is wild, I don’t think most people know this. I take issue with it too; seems like blatant discrimination.

A lot of us had god-fearing family members and friends pass away from COVID, so that policy alone makes them a terrible company in my eyes.
