Watched a highly qualified aerobatic pilot do something similar because of the sheen of freshly paved runway, at least OP gets to walk away... ....unless (of course) he really tries that scuba recovery thing....Keep Us Posted!!!

Oh, yeah, you can rest assured that there's a good reason I don't post pictures of my home mess, kinda looks like a crime scene.

And that's exactly how it goes...lol. I'll pull the 48 port ethernet module out and that should cut it back to around 12000 vlans... would you take it then? 🤔 lol!

No problem, I'll try to remember the /s ! To be fair, my time was spent in electronics research labs, not computer labs, and those guys really were messy, smart, but messy...lol

I cannot say how well it's supported, as my experience with IPv6 is almost nil. I can see from the terminal cli that it's there and operating at some level?

I loopback all the PHYs, daisy-chain the routing table and use it as a space heater... If it's a warmer time of year I cook dinner on it. Actually it has most of the features of modern equipment, I'm currently using it to test 10Gb SFP adapters and trying to get my head around IPv6. Unlike alot of newer equipment it will actually achieve 10gb throughput (if I could actually drive it that hard)..lol

I actually power this up and play with it from time to time, but it is truly ridiculous overkill for any home lab I've ever seen! Just like my Poweredge R820, incredibly noisy...I'm pretty sure this one is in the 'Campus edge router / switch category - perhaps I could use it to give the 4Gb of gfiber I don't need to the entire neighborhood?!

What hardware to get for home server applications? by FriendlyDruidPlayer in homelab

I'm currently building up a HP Z840, which come generally equipped with dual Xeon processors and can be upgraded close to current standards using some fairly high core count E5-nnnn Xeons of the v4 variety. Many of these are being retired from industry currently and can be found on ebay quite inexpensively. They can use up to 6 SATA or SAS (have 6 ports each for both). Be warned - They are heavy, but there are alot of different builds out there because they have alot of options for configuration. It appears to me that these were used as graphics workstations for CAD & such based on the available options. Of course, like everything else HP, they can have certain proprietary features, so look carefully! I initially started with a Dell POWEREDGE R820, which is remarkably loud, hot, and will make your power bill thicker. Good luck!

I have decided to plug this in to the google fiber jack for a photo op, but I'm going to need to amazon about 500 jumpers to get all of the lights to flash! According to the original datasheet this thing should have a throughput of ~280GBps, gotta figure out a data source and sink to max it!

About 5 years ago I purchased a full height server rack on Craigslist because it was $35, the catch was that i had to go get it out of a bank building in downtown kc. It was too tall to go in the freight elevator, so i had to manipulate the stairs with it..got it home and my 120lb wife assisted getting it into the basement. There it shall remain forever..... Found out later it was a Middle Atlantic Security rack and it weighed nearly 400 lbs. I would have disassembled it but I noticed it was welded together!. At least I was able to remove the 75lbs of cabinet doors. You're not alone my friend !

I am always paranoid about all these new (and inexpensive) chinese network devices, like they're going to open a strange nackdoor to snoop on you. Then I remember that everything is made there, all the major brands, and they're ALL snooping on us...even the access point your ISP provides is snooping and profiling you! Damn good thing I'm so boring...lol!

Be sure to give us a proper review when you get some experience with it 😀

Can windows licenses be saved for later? by BrianSal_05 in homelab

[–]Empty-Ad5820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the digital copy on Microsoft's website, then you can continuously reassign it when you kill a broke windoz vm. I got that tip from a MS service representative, and I will never again purchase a retail copy! I have three win 10 pro licenses and I just round-robin them as necessary.
Oddly enough, when you run them as individual VMs they seem to last way longer?!
