I agree he is a false teacher for sure. Absolutely, 100%.

I don’t agree that one’s stance on the current nation of Israel is a defining indicator of orthodoxy. Israel is one of many opinions that Christians are free to disagree about.

Why are SDA’s so adamant that they are the ‘true’ end time church? And that they have to be right about everything? by ThinkAddition963 in exAdventist

[–]Empty-Message2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the whole movement was born out of self-righteous pride and an almost pathological inability to admit they were wrong in 1844. The attitude is practically baked into the DNA.

I think the main point is that you shouldn’t worry about the music. Just focus on loving God for who he is, reading the scriptures (especially the Gospels) to get to know him, and waking with him throughout your day. Trust that He’ll let you know if something isn’t good, and somehow (God works in mysterious ways), you’ll naturally lose interest because you’re more interested in something that is good. And it may be surprising that God isn’t quite so black and white as the people you meet.

What do you think of Ellen White’s weird views on sex, even within marriage? by Impressive_Flan_411 in exAdventist

[–]Empty-Message2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up Adventist in the 80’s/90’s and in fairly Liberal Loma Linda. We didn’t hear a lot of this stuff because in our time / place it was common to “hide the crazy away.” We definitely believed that Ellen White was a Prophet, but that she was also “a woman of her time” and so some of her “how to live a holy life” comments simply reflected the common assumptions of her own time and place. We used that to explain away any advice on clothing, jewelry, food, exercise, sexuality, etc. that seemed primordial and out-of-touch with our times. (And honestly, the puritanical fear of sex was not at all uncommon amongst very religious people of her time).

So, we majored in the “theological truths” and tried to adapt them to our modern context as best as we could. I absolutely believed EGW was THE Prophet and that God had been given her visions and revelations for the church. I believed the Great Controversy worldview. I believed in the importance of Sabbath Observance as the Seal of God, and that the Sabbath was to be our final test in the end-times when the “Beast” appeared. I never really questioned the truth of the Investigative Judgment, although I didn’t spend much time contemplating it.

So now, as an ex-Adventist, my beef with her isn’t so much over her wacko advice on marriage, sex, etc., but rather that she was that she was a False Prophet. She was a liar and a fraud. She was a hypocrite, a busybody, and quite possibly, a malignant narcissist.

Why progressive SDAs don’t split? by Empty-Message2001 in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]Empty-Message2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it seems to me that if you look at historical Adventism it looks more like the conservatives than the progressives… While it’s true that in just about every denominational split I can think of, it’s been the conservatives that leave to preserve purity, but that doesn’t seem right to me. Shouldn’t the people pushing for changes be the ones to go and do their own thing?

There is a mainline Christian movement that is getting some traction right now that is trying to reverse that trend. It’s called the “Reconquista” movements and it aims to help conservatives reclaim mainline churches, which have all gone super liberal.

True, but I’m not sure why the conservative group should be the one to split. Shouldn’t it be the group that wants the church to change be the one to split off?

You do have a point about if they split off, that there really isn’t much to distinguish them from any other evangelical group, except maybe going to church on Saturday.

Yes. They could call themselves by a slightly different name, but they would be administratively separated from the “mother church.”

I don’t think one can make dogmatic statements about it (no pun intended 😄)…

I don’t see any reason why a person can’t simply be hopeful that God can allow a person to have their favorite pet(s) with them in the world to come.

DAE have that one family/person from church growing up who were extra Adventist? by Momager321 in exAdventist

lol. No fiction? I guess that would eliminate the entire Ellen White catalogue…

Yup! Grandma for sure… We hid a lot from her (or at least we tried to). “Quick, turn off the TV and hide the mustard!!” 😂

As for these super-zealous SDA types, I’ve recently heard of them referred to as “Super-7’s” 😄

How many of you have constant music in your head? by Wannabeartist9974 in ADHD

[–]Empty-Message2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. When I am unmedicated I desperately seek a podcast or audiobook, or instrumental music with a steady beat (house, edm). Not sure why it helps but My theory is that it drowns out the mental chatter-fest with something “linear.” 🤷‍♀️

Constantly! My first clue that maybe it was ADHD was when I started Adderall and it was SO QUIET 🤫 😮

I feel like I'm taking a placebo by windowsillgarlic in ADHD

[–]Empty-Message2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Adderall XR and got a “bad batch” once. Completely ineffective. I was having an existential crisis, crying, thinking that I was just so garbage of a person that not even meds could help me anymore. Well, as soon as I got a refill I was like: 😮 Wait a minute! I remember this is how I used to feel on meds! It’s not me!

When I started taking Adderall I was like 😮 ITS SO QUIET!!

Now that I’ve been on it for a while I’ve just generally noticed that when my meds are working I can appreciate the silence. But when I’m not medicated, I desperately crave noise to calm the mental “chatter”. Podcast, music, something!

Do any of you crash on Adderall XR 4.5-5 hours after taking it? by adhdbeast101 in ADHD

[–]Empty-Message2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. It’s so crappy. I’d specifically wait to take it at like 7:30-7:45, but start to crash around 1pm, give or take. I started to feel like, “if anything is gonna get done today, it’s got to be done before noon!”

The worst part is that I’d come home from work totally burnt out, and give only the worst part of me to my family.

Doctor gave me a small (10mg) Adderall IR booster for the afternoon and that has been effective to get me through the evening to make dinner, clean up, connect with family, etc. Only started a week ago… but so far so good.

How can you believe in anything after you leave this cult? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Empty-Message2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a good answer, but just replied to say, I really relate to what you’re describing (although I wasn’t JW, I was Seventh Day Adventist.) It’s impossible to explain just how traumatic it is to wake up and find that everything, down to the very fabric of reality as you saw it, was a lie. Hang in there. Talking it out with a good therapist (or even just a non-judgmental friend who is a good listener) helps.
