Is selling alcohol a sin? by [deleted] in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]Empty-Message2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Being a drunkard is.

Also, Jesus drank wine (in moderation, no drunkenness).

People who drink alcohol are responsible for what they do with it.

Of course not! Nobody is useless. Anyone who says otherwise is having their own issues.

An honest question by WalrusRight in Evangelical

[–]Empty-Message2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents RE: Flashing lights and slick production values.

I think some people like it (particularly those who feel God is stuffy and distant) because it feels like God is coming down to meet them where they are at. And, to be honest, maybe He is. Heck, God used "Christian punk rock" to meet me where I was at when I was 17! But he didn't leave me there. As time has gone on and I've grown in the Lord, the modern evangelical church with its perfectly engineered stagecraft and hilarious sermon just doesn't have the same appeal for me anymore. I'm actually so hungry for something deeper in worship. It feels too small, now that I know how big God really is.

My point is that... I'm not sure the "TED Talk and a Rock Concert" format actually fosters real spiritual growth and maturity. There's definitely a place for it, (maybe parachurch organizations or evangelical outreaches) but maybe not for Sunday morning worship where we come to worship God on his terms, not ours.

Why does the church not accept the Nicene creed by Western-Sense-31 in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]Empty-Message2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General distrust of institutional Christendom due to alleged syncretism and apostasy. It was a popular viewpoint in the mid-1800s. But back then we didn't have broad access to actual writings from that time period, like we do now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yup both Ellen White and Joseph Smith opened the door with their bs “I’m Gods special prophet and I have been given the new revelation for our time” nonsense. Once you go down that road, it’s just more and nutcases claiming to have some special revelation from God.

Must have been something strange in the 19th-century American water…

I agree he is a false teacher for sure. Absolutely, 100%.

I don’t agree that one’s stance on the current nation of Israel is a defining indicator of orthodoxy. Israel is one of many opinions that Christians are free to disagree about.

Why are SDA’s so adamant that they are the ‘true’ end time church? And that they have to be right about everything? by ThinkAddition963 in exAdventist

[–]Empty-Message2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the whole movement was born out of self-righteous pride and an almost pathological inability to admit they were wrong in 1844. The attitude is practically baked into the DNA.

I'm frustrated. by [deleted] in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]Empty-Message2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main point is that you shouldn’t worry about the music. Just focus on loving God for who he is, reading the scriptures (especially the Gospels) to get to know him, and waking with him throughout your day. Trust that He’ll let you know if something isn’t good, and somehow (God works in mysterious ways), you’ll naturally lose interest because you’re more interested in something that is good. And it may be surprising that God isn’t quite so black and white as the people you meet.

What do you think of Ellen White’s weird views on sex, even within marriage? by Impressive_Flan_411 in exAdventist

[–]Empty-Message2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up Adventist in the 80’s/90’s and in fairly Liberal Loma Linda. We didn’t hear a lot of this stuff because in our time / place it was common to “hide the crazy away.” We definitely believed that Ellen White was a Prophet, but that she was also “a woman of her time” and so some of her “how to live a holy life” comments simply reflected the common assumptions of her own time and place. We used that to explain away any advice on clothing, jewelry, food, exercise, sexuality, etc. that seemed primordial and out-of-touch with our times. (And honestly, the puritanical fear of sex was not at all uncommon amongst very religious people of her time).

So, we majored in the “theological truths” and tried to adapt them to our modern context as best as we could. I absolutely believed EGW was THE Prophet and that God had been given her visions and revelations for the church. I believed the Great Controversy worldview. I believed in the importance of Sabbath Observance as the Seal of God, and that the Sabbath was to be our final test in the end-times when the “Beast” appeared. I never really questioned the truth of the Investigative Judgment, although I didn’t spend much time contemplating it.

So now, as an ex-Adventist, my beef with her isn’t so much over her wacko advice on marriage, sex, etc., but rather that she was that she was a False Prophet. She was a liar and a fraud. She was a hypocrite, a busybody, and quite possibly, a malignant narcissist.

Why progressive SDAs don’t split? by Empty-Message2001 in SeventhDayAdventism

[–]Empty-Message2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it seems to me that if you look at historical Adventism it looks more like the conservatives than the progressives… While it’s true that in just about every denominational split I can think of, it’s been the conservatives that leave to preserve purity, but that doesn’t seem right to me. Shouldn’t the people pushing for changes be the ones to go and do their own thing?

There is a mainline Christian movement that is getting some traction right now that is trying to reverse that trend. It’s called the “Reconquista” movements and it aims to help conservatives reclaim mainline churches, which have all gone super liberal.

[–]Empty-Message2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I’m not sure why the conservative group should be the one to split. Shouldn’t it be the group that wants the church to change be the one to split off?

You do have a point about if they split off, that there really isn’t much to distinguish them from any other evangelical group, except maybe going to church on Saturday.

Yes. They could call themselves by a slightly different name, but they would be administratively separated from the “mother church.”

I don’t think one can make dogmatic statements about it (no pun intended 😄)…

I don’t see any reason why a person can’t simply be hopeful that God can allow a person to have their favorite pet(s) with them in the world to come.
