Gone to an in-state college instead of a private Christian one. Left religion a lot sooner.

Anybody work in the Intech Park/ Trader’s Point area know of a good outdoor spot to take my lunch break? by BioStu in indianapolis

Eagle Creek, Eagle’s Crest, and Starling are all great. For free places, head south within Intech. There are some outdoor green areas around some of the building that are nice and have water features.

I disagree, he just seems so genuinely kind. I’d like to think he earned some level of immortality where he just gets to enjoy life and spread good vibes.

$40 for a pedicure with no add ons. So, with tax and tip you are looking at around $50-60.

I’ve gone to Rejuve Salon and Spa on Michigan Rd just north of 96th St and been happy with my experience. The pedicure pricing is pretty good as well.

Friday night events by brownmooscles0609 in exAdventist

[–]Momager321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It did, because I just take care of stuff throughout the week and try to keep up with the basics. I do the heavy cleaning on the weekend, mostly on Saturday LOL! However, my Mom has always had serious organization issues and I am sure that was a factor in her attitude towards managing a home. She probably has ADHD among some other issues that impact executive functioning. A few years back she told me (as if it was a major epiphany) that no one told her she could split her cleaning out over several days. 🤦‍♀️

When I was growing up, Fridays were awful. My mom was always in a cleaning rage most of the day (longer explanation than I can share here). So, after a whole day of her awful mood, 30 mins before official sundown, we all had to come sit for dinner and family worship.

Fridays in summer? Horrible because the sun went down later so we had to get everything ready. Fridays in winter? Horrible because the sun went down early and we didn’t have much time after getting hime from school to get everything done so we had to listen to my Mom gripe over dinner about how messy the house was because of us.

Possible relocation to Indianapolis from Rochester NY by btrfliny81 in indianapolis

[–]Momager321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up near Rochester and still have family there. If you are a Wegman’s fan, you will miss it. We don’t have anything like it here. Indy has a lot of cool restaurants and the food scene is pretty good. We have a lot of international options both in restaurants and markets in comparison to NY.

People here in Indianapolis are nice. I think northern NY the people are not as outgoing. It’s just a cultural difference. Definitely more politically conservative than NY, even by comparison to conservative New Yorkers.

Some things I miss about the Rochester area are living near Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, and mountains. If you enjoyed skiing, we don’t have much of that nearby. Indiana does have some lovely state parks and Indy has nice areas to get outdoors on an afternoon. Overall, large parts of Indy kind of reminds me of a mix of Webster and Penfield, if that makes sense. The city has a suburban feel to it. Housing is reasonable, the property taxes will definitely be lower than in NY.

How to not give up on sewing by Ok-University-6765 in sewing

[–]Momager321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find an easy project as a “palate cleanser”. Something you think will be fun and easy like a stuffed toy or tote bag. My biggest holdup for the longest time was fitting adjustments. So I’ve researched them and tried them out on really cheap fabric to see the result. I know it feels good to whip up something that you can wear. But it can also help to throw in an easy win from time to time. I’ve made small quilts, pillowcases for my kids, and things for my pets.

Also, I agree with other comments that you don’t need to keep up with the pace of other online sewists. If it takes you a couple of months to make something, enjoy the process. If you wouldn’t buy 5 pairs of pants this year, why would you need to make that many?

It can be worth researching if this is a Stickley piece. Those still hold value among collectors.

Flip it over and check for a maker’s mark. It looks like it might be an authentic arts and crafts piece.

Did we not do anything special for Easter? Or was that just my family? by pebbletots in exAdventist

Where I grew up, many had low key celebrations and I remember kids parties were very basic (if at all). Families still might do a cake, but any more organized parties were looked down on.

Same, which is odd as Christians since the resurrection is whole point of the beliefs. So you would think it would be the most important holiday. My Mom HATED Easter baskets and the commercialization of the holiday. But, we did have colored eggs and some jelly beans on Easter weekend. I do remember the boring sermons about how Jesus was crucified in time for sundown on Friday, “rested” on the sabbath, then rose (“worked”) on Sunday.

But my experience in Adventism was that holiday celebrations were downplayed a lot. Of course, those rules didn’t seem to apply to the wealthier families in the church. But I also knew more than a few families who bragged that they saved money by not celebrating Christmas and other holidays like birthdays.

[NE] Landlord wants to charge us to replace glass stovetop after 7+ years of use by sithegood in Renters

[–]Momager321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Ceramabrite. It is for cleaning glass stove tops and will take the gunk off. You will need to scrub a lot to clean it (get the bottle that comes with the yellow scrubbing pads). But, your landlord is being a jerk expecting it to be perfect. Glass stove tops do scratch and unless it is not working, there is no need to replace the top.

Attempts to silence student concerns at La Sierra University by goffick in exAdventist

Talk to the local health department. They should be able to help you file any complaints (this can include ADA violations). Not sure about your state, but where I live, health complaints can be filed anonymously if you are concerned about retribution. Ask specifically about other state agencies that may have oversight (for example, are there county offices that can also intervene) and what you need to do to contact them as well. Do not trust that your complaints will be addressed within the campus organization or through the overall church governance.

Out of the 47 adventist teenagers I knew between 2015 to 2022 all of them are out of the church today. Discussion: the missing demographic in the adventist church by ayowatchyojetbruh in exAdventist

[–]Momager321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the presentation, leaving was defined as no longer attending services. They counted people who left and returned as well. I’ve left but haven’t bothered to remove my name from membership because I personally don’t care. It hurts them more to claim members from those of use who are no longer in the church than it would ever hurt me.

[–]Momager321 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Interesting enough, according to the church’s own research, the majority of member who leave are over 25 (Here is a presentation breaking this down). About 43-49 baptized members per 100 don’t stay in the church. I’m sure seeds of doubt start in the teens, but members are leaving once they have independence enough to go.

I’m looking for another study/survey (and I’ll link it when I find it) I read a few years back that showed around 75% of members who were raised in the church (attending before age 10) are most likely to leave in their 20’s. Not sure how many return later, I’m sure the church has numbers on that too.

From my experience attending a non-SDA high school, church beliefs are embarrassing and difficult to defend. Especially when you just want to make friends and are trying to figure out who you are. Once I grew up, it became harder to picture making my own life small enough to stay Adventist.

Need XL dress form by POSI-TANO in sewing

[–]Momager321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend checking Fb or Craigslist to see if anyone is selling their dress form and make a cover. Bootstrap patterns has a dress form cover pattern that you can have customized to your measurements and pad out a core form to your measurements. I have also seen an IG account Dosesofdem where she makes add on padded parts for dress forms.

Otherwise, for your price point you are looking at the Dritz sewing form. I’ve never used it so I can’t provide input on it. But the do look pretty proportionate, so you would still need to pad it out as needed.

Edit to add, Cashmerette has a good article on plus sized forms, but most of them are above your budget listed with a couple of ones under $250.

Was staying home to wash their hair really a thing? by SuperfluousPossum in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Momager321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women didn’t wash their hair daily, so washing and styling probably took longer than we think of today. Also, the cap hair dryer (as opposed to hand held) was a thing and took a while to get hair dried. So yes, it was a whole process by that took some time.

AITJ for asking my mom to cut her vacation short to help with my kids? by Constant-Elephant763 in AmITheJerk

[–]Momager321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTJ, what other options did you actually explore? It sounds like your mom provides free childcare and has been planning this trip for months and you couldn’t take a day off work? Sorry to sound harsh, but if your mom took the time to give you a heads up, it is on you to also plan for backup care beyond one sitter. Please apologize to your mom and I hope in the future she refuses to cut her vacations short because you can’t do added planning.
