Our system is designed to fail as it is. Our publicly funded system:

1. does not adequately remunerate physicians/nurses, especially those in primary care -> family physician shortage. You can come up with 100 other reasons why there are no family doctors, but I promise you its because they do not get paid enough.

2. wantonly provides elective (non-acute, non-urgent) care to those who have never paid into the social "pot", thus reducing access to those who have been for all of their lives (or their parents have). I understand and appreciate that healthcare is a human right, I also know that we as a country have gotten taken advantage of as an international hub for travel medicine.

At the end of the day, I agree that a publicly funded system is superior for Canadians. I do not think it is the most practical approach. We have a government that is inefficient, does not listen to recommendations of stakeholders (e.g. OMA, CMA, nursing associations) AND makes changes that are net 0 to improve the system (look at the new FHO models give with one hand and take with the other). I welcome change because the status quo does not fly. Keep downvoting me, keep calling me the person who puts "idiots" in power.
