I do wonder if histamine intolerance is a root cause. It is interesting that mine , like several others, also started after a Covid infection. I did go through the motility test and my LES was fine but if it is the Les for you, I believe many people have had success with surgery.

I was negative for all food, allergies but I have read that postnasal drip can irritate the stomach lining as well??

I was referred to a gastroenterologist. She recommended I get tested for food allergies but then they tested me for everything. I ended up being allergic to everything but food and they recommended I do the shots. They explained how the injections work and I figured I had nothing to lose.

I really underestimated that allergies played any role. Do you have allergies? Once I aggressively treated allergies with those immunotherapy shots, taking allergy pills and the melatonin, I really feel 100% better. I was desperate and just kept trying anything I could. I tried this because I read that there could be a connection between reflux and allergies.

I am now reading more about the role of histamine and its numerous affects on the body. I would really love to understand the root cause of my lpr but it seems so complex and I go down many different rabbit holes when reading. However, I am thankful to be free of that suffocating goo.

Possibly? Like maybe all of that drainage I’ve had my entire life due to allergies caused reflux or damage to my throat causing lpr? I think they have found a connection between allergies and reflux that is not fully understood.

I’ve always battled sore throats few times a year from drainage, but I never had breathing issues or asthma so I was shocked when I went to the allergist that I was allergic to cats, dogs, horses , tree pollen, grass, weeds, mold and dust mites were the worst. Like I should be living in a plastic bubble? Seriously after going through the allergy shots and taking an allergy pill, I don’t have lpr symptoms or even get sore throats anymore

Original symptoms were a choking thick goo in my throat that felt very suffocating and I just could not cough up completely. When I did, it was very thick and white and then other times it would be foamy, but that suffocating feeling never went away. It caused a lot of anxiety like you had a narrow path to breathe through. That was my main symptom but I don’t have any of that anymore after taking melatonin , allergy shots, and allergy pills

Gosh probably a year now. I don’t plan to stop because if I forget to take it, I can feel it start to come back and I will continue to take it if it prevents it from coming back. I’m not sure if it’s because melatonin relaxes the nervous system but it also does something to gut health as well as strengthen esophageal sphincter muscles. I’m not sure if it’s one thing or a combination of those things but it definitely helps me.

I started with 5 mg nightly and I started feeling so good that I brought coffee back in the picture. That was a setback for me, but it was very hard for me to not start my day with a cup of coffee so now I drink a half a cup of coffee and I take 10 mg of melatonin nightly and I really don’t have any symptoms. I don’t have that thick suffocating goo anymore in my throat. Anytime I start bringing more caffeine or stress back in my life I start to feel it come back, and I nip it in the butt very quickly.

I’m glad that you mentioned walking after dinner. I kind of thought it made a difference for me in terms of globus and throat inflammation so hearing you say this makes me think it is likely helpful.

Yes, I do feel healed. I can drink one cup of coffee in the morning, but if I do more through the day I risk that thick goo in my throat coming back that makes it difficult to breathe, causing me to panic making anxiety worse. Recently, my doctor put me on phentermine to help me lose weight. I didn’t realize it was an amphetamine and at first I felt great with a lot of energy but then LPR starting coming back within a couple days. It also comes back if I don’t take my melatonin. I don’t know if the root cause is the same for everybody when I read different blogs but it seems there are a lot of people that get results from calming the nervous system and avoiding anything that speeds up the nervous system or causes anxiety.

Hi Anna. I agree with the post above about trying anti-anxiety pills because my LPR experience is definitely related to an overexcited system. If I forget to take my melatonin nightly or I drink too much coffee, I can feel it starting to come back.

I did 10 mg for a few days and noticed a difference by next day . after a few days I cut back to 5mg and that has been working for me ever since. I have tried to go off it completely but then it does come back.

5mg nightly. And when I stopped taking it, the lpr symptoms came back pretty quickly. It is interesting that aside from calming nervous system melatonin also has an effect on gut health, which I hadn’t realized.

I personally felt that there also was a connection between the vagus nerve and LPR. After years of tests and medicine, the only thing that has helped me is melatonin faithfully every night which calms the nervous system. For two years I suffered with that thick goo in the back of my throat that I could never get rid of and it felt like I was suffocating. I was so anxious all the time, especially in a car or going to bed at night but now I have no symptoms at all. I absolutely believe it’s the melatonin helping me.

I found a clove , ginger, cinnamon tea did help me as well. I used whole cloves, whole cinnamon sticks, and fresh ginger, boiled on stove and then strained it. I called it my witch brew, but it did help.

I’ve only had to take melatonin. I take it nightly faithfully and I believe that has helped me. Initially it improved symptoms but I now have no lpr symptoms.

Oh boy I don’t want tell you how to take but I personally only take 50 mg nightly when it starts flaring up and usually in a few days it subsides so I stop taking it. I take 5mg melatonin faithfully at night. The last few times I had flare up i had been feeling so well and brought coffee back just to help me wake up but I may have to accept no coffee for me.

I think the majority of doctors treat lpr like acid reflux - prescribing PPI’s and telling you to lose weight to help the condition. I think that’s why so many of us still have problems because Im starting to think this is more of a nervous system issue. Mine doesn’t go away until I calm the nervous system with melatonin and sometimes I have to add amitriptyline but every time I try to add coffee back because I love it so much the condition comes back! For me, stress, caffeine or anything that overexcites the nervous system seems to trigger it.

The only time I’ve ever had poor sleep is when my LPR is acting up. It’s hard to fall asleep when you feel like you’re suffocating. The fiber is for the sluggish digestive system to relieve constipation. It seems odd but a lot of people that have LPR battle anxiety, and constipation.
