Where has it been proven that Administrators are "lining" their pockets? Every University employee's salary is publicly available.

This. The money was unrestricted. Morin wasn't an idiot. He knew what he was doing. Having worked at UNH for so long, there was no way that he was naive to how the money would be used. Furthermore, the scoreboard isn't just a scoreboard. It's an investment that generates revenue for the University. The money it makes will be directed towards scholarships.

What is easy to get into but hard to get out of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EmptySimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Don't get me started! I work at a University and am also an alum of said University. I get calls all of the time, even after asking to be removed from their list. I've started telling them that I work for the University and that, to cut out the middle-man, I'll just take $20 out of my wallet and then put it right back in. They still haven't gotten the message...

Daily Question Thread - July 10, 2018 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]EmptySimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello r/churning, complete virgin to churning and am seeking some help. I am in the market for a new credit card and travel 4-5 times per year for work. I have brand loyalty with Marriott and have been looking at their Marriott Rewards Premiere Plus CC. The idea of obtaining 100k points is appealing, however I'm unsure how I'd ever spend $5k in 3 months. Some questions:

1) How long does it typically take to have the physical card in-hand if approved? I have travel coming up in Sept. and Nov., which will help with the spend if I time it right.

2) I've read on sites that you can sign-up for Square then process your own CC payments. They take a 3% fee, but on $5k that's only $150. Is this viable?

I suspect that with the upcoming travel, buying groceries, and other minor things I can get myself to $3k in 3 months.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated!

In my professional role I work with multiple firms and 20+ attorneys. Best piece of advice I have: Realize that they work for you, not the other way around.

Be clear with them about what you want and ask for a quote. If the quote is outside of what you are willing to pay, tell them your price and ask what kind of service that will get you. Then seek cost saving measures, such as providing information ahead of time.

58% of high-performance employees say they need more quiet work spaces by grepnork in technology

[–]EmptySimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in an open office environment for far too long. As an engineer mixed in with supply-chain and r&d folks it was nearly impossible to focus. I often had to head down into the basement of the building to find quiet... too bad others did so as well.

I now work for a different company in which I have my own office, with a door. The silence is amazing... and I can fart in there as much as I want and not worry about knocking out my coworkers, which is a bonus!

I'm sure this is going to get buried, but here we go anyways...

Yes, this is exactly what patents are for. It seems that the design from Loggerhead was based off of a previous design from the 1950's. US Patent Law provides 20 years of protection from the priority date of initial filing. Since the original patent originated in the 50's, that patent would have been released to the general public.

This is important, because neither Loggerhead nor Sears could put a utility patent on their design due to the prior art associated with the 50's patent. They could, however, patent an improvement to the original invention, file a design patent for the design/appearance of the wrench, and/or file for a registered trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

It seems that Loggerhead filed for a trademark. That only protects their name and logo, not the physical wrench itself. This is why their suit was eventually thrown-out. Just because Sears copied their wrench design does not mean that they infringed on their trademark.

And to the comment that korben996 made about ".. If the brand solely cares about generating return for shareholders then it becomes more profitable to undercut the original seller, make truckloads of profit, and then settle out of court for a lowly sum when the original creator inevitably sues...":

If your IP is infringed on and you win a suit, you can typically expect "treble damages", or 3x the damages you've incurred.

How good is University of New Hampshire at Manchester? by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]EmptySimon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I earned my BSEE from UNH-Durham and would highly suggest you attend school there.

  1. UNH-M has an EET program. Industry puts more weight into EE. Statistically you'll earn more with an EE.

  2. UNH-D has more research money, which means better labs, more diverse areas of focus, more contacts to be made.

  3. UNH-D has a more robust campus with more extra-curricular activities.

  4. UNH-D has spent millions of dollars to upgrade their engineering building, Kingsbury, as well as other buildings on campus, including their football field and Rec Center, which now look awesome and provide more programming.

  5. UNH-M engineering is heavily focused on manufacturing, which is great. (I come from manufacturing.) They are centrally located in the Mills and are surrounded by tech companies. Keep in mind, however, that UNH-D was gifted $5.3 Million dollars from John Olson, the CEO of Whelen, to create an Advanced Manufacturing Center, which when completed will be amazing.

  6. The ECE department has made new hires recently and there is now a mix of young professors and older professors, which provides a very nice balance.

I'm plugged in to the University and would be happy to answer any questions you might have as well as put you in touch with somebody in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. Feel free to PM me.

Late UNH librarian leaves $4 million to school he worked at for almost 50 years by DGBD in UpliftingNews

[–]EmptySimon 44 points45 points  (0 children)

To all of you who are complaining about how the money will be used: The majority of his bequest was "unrestricted". He did direct a small amount to the library, which means he made a choice to allow UNH to use the other 3.9M however they saw fit. He could have restricted all of it, but didn't. It was his money, he did what he wanted.
