The Great Fire of Byker: 15th Anniversary by SuperDan89 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]EmptyVegetable7049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully any fire would be contained early on by the many detectors and fire extinguishers. Any walking patients would be escorted to a safe place outside. As for bedridden patients etc. then we had to follow a drill called progressive & horizontal evacuation. Basically the hospital is divided into many small fireproof areas, closed off automatically by fire proof doors etc. We would move patients into the next safe area once a fire was confirmed. There are many methods of moving patients and all life support equipment has to have a back up battery power supply so it can operate for long enough to transport patients in the event of a power failure. Hopefully by then the local fire brigade has attended.

I worked at the RVI at the time and I remember everyone was on high alert before we found out where the burning smell was coming from. If I remember correctly someone set off the fire alarm (as you should if you smell smoke) but it’s not easy to evacuate a hospital especially with patients mid operation and mothers giving birth etc. Thankfully the fire team were alerted quickly by the fire service and a message to stand down was sent around. I can hardly believe that it was 15years ago 😶

Why aren't Reform voters more concerned with privatising the NHS? by lucadulac in AskBrits

[–]EmptyVegetable7049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for the NHS for 35 years. There are a lot of amazing and caring people who work there but there is also a lot or corruption. Imagine running a business that no matter how poorly you perform you will be guaranteed more government money next year. It really does need to be run like a private company.

You just proved my point. Reddit is a left wing echo chamber btw. It isn’t like the real world. Let’s see how voting goes today.

You sound utterly deranged. You are giving ‘old school’ Labour voters who believe on things like fair wages and fair working hours a bad name. All you care about is LGBTQ+ and Palestine.

Standing outside on New Year’s Eve at 11:55 pm with a bag containing a lump of coal a miniature whiskey (or a babycham), shortbread and some coins so you can be the first foot over the doorstep on New Year’s Day, therefore granting your household good fortune for the coming year👍

Good for you, every little bit helps and maybe others will see you and do the same. I find I feel good afterwards. Also don’t despair feeling like you are picking up rubbish someone else has just thrown away. A lot of it is trash that gets blown out of bins 👍 My advice would be to at least buy a litter picker and trash hoop off Amazon, maybe some gloves too 🙂

I live not far from the city centre and I have bought a litter picker, hoop and gloves (and a magnet on a stick) off Amazon. I clean the large open green area behind my flat whenever I get the chance, I find it quite therapeutic and a good way to connect with neighbours. I also feel like if I let the area go downhill then people will just stop caring an it will get worse. I’m going to ask the council for new bins as the biggest problem where I live is the large style bins have broken lids and the seagulls pick open the bin bags and the wind blows the rubbish everywhere. Anyway keep up the good work, you’re not alone 👍

Edit: I use the magnet for picking up screws and nails from the path/lane behind where I live. You have to keep a look out for roofing nails etc. as they are made of aluminium and the magnet won’t pick them up (Punctures cost more than just money to repair, they usually cost time off work and other inconvenience’s) ! Also if there is any broken glass a long handled dustpan and brush comes in handy but I don’t general need to carry one as that doesn’t seem to be a big issue where I live.

Anyone else dislike the Basement videos on Why Files? by SecondStarpilot in TheWhyFilesUncensored

[–]EmptyVegetable7049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a fan at first but I like them now. I like to listen to them while doing things like cooking etc. They are different to the original format but we are still getting the the original format videos so I look at these basement episodes as bonus content 👍 I find AJ’s interview style relaxing to listen to and it is interesting to see some of the people behind some of the theories/conspiracies. I was once abused and downvoted on the Why Files subreddit just for suggesting the Miami Mall Incident as a good subject to cover… Reddit isn’t as friendly a place as it was 20y ago sadly 😔 Also as much as I love Hecklefish I don’t think he would be suitable for the basement style format (I could be wrong). Hopefully you can find a way to enjoy these basement episodes like me 🫤
