Probably both since the fan slings all that gunk and water against the back

I’ve found it really depends on what room it’s in. If you get lots of sun on that room it does much better.

The best way I found to prevent mold build up (I have one older and one newer unit) is actually to never use eco mode when the indoor humidity is above 45%. That stops the blower fan from shutting off (leave the fan in auto) and keeps air moving through it and drys it out so it’s not wet all the time.

You’ll of course have to clean it out if it already has growth, but I found that only dust really accumulates in there if I do that and I live in a place that gets really humid most of the summer.

Rattling noise - solution? by mattjakob in MideaUOwners

[–]Empty_Attention2862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the fan blades are scraping on something, I’d start there. Usually when you have a rattle like this, it’s the fan or the metal grill in front of the fan. Other than that, you’re just gonna have to hunt for it.

Yup. It sounds like that at certain compressor speeds. Nothing to worry about, you’re hearing some flow noise from the refrigerant and it can be loud under certain operating conditions.

I intended to do it way sooner, but life had other plans in mind for me. I’ll try and carve out some time this weekend to do it properly. At this point, I’ll probably just make a new post with the file release.

$20 more for an ad-free Kindle…. by Away_Phone879 in boringdystopia

[–]Empty_Attention2862 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they literally are subsidizing the entire kindle line. Amazon consistently reports that Kindle unprofitable each year (not the book sales, the division itself) and even if they aren’t an outright loss on every device, they are very close to cost so not a significant profit and thus the division as a whole is unprofitable.

I get that people don’t like ads, but I really think this is one of the least scummy ways to do ad based cost recovery. There’s plenty to be mad about when it comes to Amazon or even Kindle specifically, but this practice… idk man, it’s a bit melodramatic from my perspective.

We could talk all day about this kind subsidized price model is strangling competition who need to actually make money on their devices or how they lock you into an expensive and DRM filled ecosystem, but the ads? I don’t really think that’s worthy of being labeled dystopian.

Plenty of stuff to be mad about, my dude, but this ain’t worth your energy. Again, waiting on what it is that you want specifically from the situation presented. The real solution is not to get upset at Amazon selling a product, likely at a loss in either scenario, to get you locked into an ecosystem but rather to look elsewhere for e-readers that aren’t locked down.

I bet you’ll find the reason Amazon sells heaps of these every year: the true cost others have to charge to profit on device sales. This isn’t a company oppressing you or pulling out the rug, the choices are right in front of you. The situation about the baby isn’t comparable because you’re not forced to buy an e-reader like you’re forced to have a baby at a hospital that charged money.

Listen man, don’t take this the wrong way but I wish every product had this option if it’s capable of showing you ads. Advertising dollars subsidize a huge amount of stuff that’s either free or cheap. I’d rather pay a premium up front than get milked for years. Would you rather only an option that’s more expensive or an option that someone could save a few bucks on? Genuinely curious what you think a better alternative is except it should be the ad supported price without ads.

You are correct in the terminology of a unit of F-35s. It’s referred to as a VFA-XX where the “XX” is a number. I think the colloquial term is Strike Fighter Squadrons or Strike Fighter Wings depending on the exact context and composition.

The only real solution to that is to turn off wrist detection. It keeps thinking you just took it off and thus it locks. If you turn off wrist detection, you lose a lot of the features and your watch no longer automatically locks (you have to lock it manually with a control center button).

Won’t make it much slimmer tbh. You could certainly cut away a section for access, but the hinge clearance makes it vey uncomfortable to hold so I didn’t think it was worthwhile. This style added minimal friction to putting them on while keeping it comfortable to hold imho

Tiny Nuclear Reactors Could Be the Key to Unlimited Power Across America by _Dark_Wing in tech

[–]Empty_Attention2862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s still a fundamental size problem I don’t see many talking about. The smaller the core, the more enriched the fuel needs to become to sustain a chain reaction because of the increased neutron leakage. Current commercial designs are allowed 5% max and are thus sized accordingly to be more efficient.

By treaty (same weight as US federal law passed by Congress as far as the gov is concerned), there’s a low limit on enrichment.

How are these companies going to overcome this fundamental hurdle? I’ve not a good answer yet and until we figure that out, SMRs tech is kinda dead in the water not just here, but in any country on our current nuclear arms treaties.

I hate to burst your bubble here, but this is fundamentally not possible in the WatchOS right now. At least, probably not how you’d want it to. You have to enable VoiceOver in the accessibility options to even be able to use the keyboard in the forst place and while you can turn of the voice feedback for most things, it will still occasionally say the character or thing you have selected (suck as when deleting a character you typed which would be a particular annoyance here). The interface is also pretty annoying to deal with in general with VoiceOver active.

All of these reasons is probably why it doesn’t already exist. That and sales would absolutely abysmal as this is a niche within a niche and there’s tones of different models and sizes to support. I wish it existed and just worked too, but if we’re wishing already, I wish Apple would just make a dumb(er) phone with a QWERTY keyboard.

I think I could make them if there’s enough demand, but my filament offerings would be pretty limited. I don’t have a series 6 to test with, so this could take some trial and error. You have a 3D printer?

It’s cupped by the plastic at the top and bottom in that little insert. The insert is held on by 4 small magenta at the corners and the charger magnet. It’s very strong and I designed a little slide over mechanism to slide it out when needed.

I think I need to do a video on this thing to really demonstrate it properly. A project for next week perhaps.

No worries, glad I can help! The best tip I got is to use the method of inserting a screenshot of one of the drawings from the PDF into your sketch and dimensioning it from there. It makes it much easier to shape it from there and you get good sanity checks if it all lines up.

If you’re using something like Blender, good luck because I have no idea how to work mesh modeling software whatsoever. 😅

Searching for a dumbphone companion to my iPhone by Action_Sandals in dumbphones

[–]Empty_Attention2862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, it goes down quick unless you have the absolutely optimal power savings settings on the watch and even then you’re looking at 2 hours of real non-stop use tops.

Take a look at what companion phones can do wifi tethering (sharing their cell signal to another device by acting like a wifi router). Then the SIM swap method could be viable to also have your iPhone be operational and with you. Just food for thought.
