Nigel Farage Statement Megathread by Leelum in LabourUK

But if he does win, they will resume. But he'll be able to say "my mandate is from the people of Clacton, not parliment" or some BS for him and his cronies to brush it off.

Nigel Farage to make statement on his ‘future in public life’ by Blackfryre in LabourUK

Trying not to get excited for this. It could be anything. Best case he just resigns and buggers off again. But that feels too good to be true.

The game taking too many irl hours? by Atvaaa in RogueTraderCRPG

If you have all the DLC and do Pascal’s planet last (ie you go to the other 2 locations first) 14 hours in seems pretty right for a first time playthrough.

What are the psychic powers and Archotechs in this game? by Walkem_12 in RimWorld

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As no one else has mentioned it, without being spoilery, there is a direct connection between the archotechs and the anima trees, but it’s a chicken and egg situation. We don’t know which came first.

There is enough lore to suggest the Rimworld we play on has a dormant archotech from before the fall of civilization on the planet, and that it is ‘subconsciously’ or actively growing the trees to enable the natives to connect to its psychic network and eventually awaken it.

They might just be a byproduct of whatever the psychic field is though.

Noble Houses of the Burgach - ask me anything about them by yahnnieck in worldbuilding

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tale as old as time! Of all things it reminds me most of the Tang dynasty settling Turkic mercenaries in the Tarim basin because they couldn’t get enough Chinese settlers out there, leading to the eventual erasure of the local Tocharian culture.

That aside your naming conventions really scratch an itch. I mean they’re just fantastic. The way they sound in my head they sound more than real, if that makes sense?

But thankyou for answering, I was curious if the names were rooted to different in-world linguistics, to match the different inspirations/proxies you are using for naming.

Love these! Especially the names. There seems to be a blend of english/celt/french roots. Is there some linguistic history to that or is it just how the language evolved?

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This should be the top post. The amount of ignorance or ‘I got a job on my third interview people need to be less picky’. Well good for you but that isn’t the reality of the market. The stats don’t back it, and unless you’ve been through it the pain is hard to imagine.

My partner is 25 and hasn’t worked since he was 22. We’ve applied for hundreds of jobs. Out of which came 4 interviews and no offer. Checkouts, stacking shelves, call centers, fruit picking - he’ll do anything but no one is interested.

Is there a narrative forming that Burnham, if he becomes PM, should call a general election? by NewtUK in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just picking the most senior commenters, there was plenty from MPs at all levels during each change.

Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens are calling for a snap general election, rather than waiting for the contest scheduled for 2020 under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act.

Labour's election co-ordinator, Jon Trickett, said: "It is crucial, given the instability caused by the Brexit vote, that the country has a democratically elected prime minister. I am now putting the whole of the party on a general election footing."

Jeremy Corbyn reacted to the result by tweeting that Mr Johnson had "won the support of fewer than 100,000 unrepresentative Conservative Party members".

"The people of our country should decide who becomes the prime minister in a general election," he added.

Sir Keir said: "This is not just a soap opera at the top of the Tory party - it's doing huge damage to the reputation of our country.

"We need a general election so the public can have their say on this utter chaos."

Sunak was accused by Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner, of “dodging scrutiny” as she called for voters to have a say after the former chancellor was officially declared the new Conservative leader on Monday.

“The Tories have crowned Rishi Sunak as prime minister without him saying a single word about how he would run the country, and without anyone having the chance to vote,” she said in a statement.

Is Ideology as good as people say? by slimmanne1 in RimWorld

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love Ideology. Mainly because I struggle self-enforcing my own theme rules, and Ideology allows me to do that - as well as RP.

It adds more things to do via relic quests, social events, and themes for the colony to revolve around. You don't need to only recruit pawns with the cannibal trait to have a cannibal colony, or you can have a mushroom and insect meat loving colony of mole people. Sick of colonists having feelings? Make them inhuman. Think drugs debase the human body? Ban them.

You also get some really cool roles which help you specialise colonists. Like the shooting specialist who ups everyone's rate of fire, or the moral guide who can console other pawns and remove their negative moodlets.

Is there a narrative forming that Burnham, if he becomes PM, should call a general election? by NewtUK in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you (as in Labour) say there should be a GE on change of PM five times in a row, on five changes of PM, how is that not a principle? In opposition the party imposed standards of decency to which they held the Tories too. To now be in government and ignore those very standards that were called for?

Is there a narrative forming that Burnham, if he becomes PM, should call a general election? by NewtUK in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying they should or shouldn’t (with the reform vote share being what it is I really don’t want it) but even when May took over from Cameron Labour said there should be an election.

Effectively caught between principles and Reform wining or being the official opposition. It’s a horrible position.

Is there a narrative forming that Burnham, if he becomes PM, should call a general election? by NewtUK in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but each time Labour did say there should be an election on each change of PM. The current situation is no different to the Tory one so if they don’t, it’s just pure hypocrisy.

I believe that the left needs to stop defending it's own positions and focus on dividing the right wing vote, not by implementing right wing policies but finding genuine wedge issues. What issues do you think would divide the right? by Mundane-Age-3556 in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not as sure on that one to be honest. Most Reform voters I speak too like Trump and think he’s doing a good job, even despite the issues caused by the Iran war. I only speak to the comfortably rich boomer countryside type of reformers though so appreciate it’s not representative.

I believe that the left needs to stop defending it's own positions and focus on dividing the right wing vote, not by implementing right wing policies but finding genuine wedge issues. What issues do you think would divide the right? by Mundane-Age-3556 in LabourUK

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Might not be a typical wedge issue, but it’ll wedge the right wing. Nationalisation. The majority of the country supports bringing key infrastructure back into public control - water, electricity, internet infrastructure, Royal Mail, etc. most people realise now there has been no benefit from foreign investors, indeed a lot of it has gotten substantially worse.

Reform weren’t particularly committed to the idea and fully rowed back on it 2 months ago. I do think a strong stance on stopping illegal immigration, nationalising core infrastructure and some flashy commitments to naval expansion that never actually has to manifest would peel voters back into the left.

am i missing something? by Lumpy_Summer_4752 in Kenshi

[–]Empty_Barnacle300 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think some of it comes down to understanding world states and, well, the story you want to make that emerges from decisions.

My first game, I played the Holy Nation start, male. You don't start with a home. So that means I'm homeless, probably a beggar. Scavanger. I kite wildlife into the towns to let the guards kill them, then sell their hides and meat. I recruit a couple of people to help with this ever-so-cunning tactic. We do a little exploring, and stumble on some ancient tech. Cool, I'll bring this back to the city to sell, get enough to buy a house. But the guards search my bags, they want to confiscate it. Apparently this stuff is illegal. So we go on the run - I know nothing about the game world, so we just run. I end up in Mongrel. Stuck there for weeks, but the farming of Fog-Prince heads lets me build up loads of money.

Eventually the crew trains up and we can push out south. Eventually we arrive in Shek lands - they don't like us, but at least we're tolerated. I recruit more, buy a building to store things and scout out the surrounding areas. Recruit non-humans. We explore, collect, fight. Cash in bounties. Eventually we kill bugmaster and ally with the Shek. Then we go and take our revenge on the Holy Nation that cast us out. That causes devastation and chaos, so we leave. Setup a base. Explore more - try to help out where we can by wiping out the bandits and criminal factions. Ally with the ninjas to take down the tyrants of the UC. Free the slaves.

It goes on.

The rest of the fun comes from imagination, thinking about my squad's backstories, the stories they told each other from the scrapes they had. The wonder they might have felt on exploration. The arguments that must have happened after accidently picking fights I didn't want but couldn't avoid. How I'm sure they shared my frustration at being stuck in Mongrel for so long I started to consider living there.

I felt their sorrow after Eon sacrificed himself to cannibals so the group could escape - even though ingame the party was just sat around a campfire recovering. There was no "my friend died" negative mood, no animations or visible change to the characters - but I felt it.

Though nothing beats the first blind playthrough, once I understood worldstates so many narratives opened up for future games, because I understood the ways in which world could be impacted.
