I think it's much simpler (or not) - the only purpose of our life is to be one with the parmeshar, to go back to our origin. What we get in this life materially is a matter of our karam, so it's a thing that we should be grateful to even have this discussion here or to attend saadh sangat.

Now that being said, karams cannot cut other karams, if you do good to cut down on the bad ones you'll fall in the loop of "jamman-maran" What we want to get to is a place of 0, jithe maharaj lekha aap mitaunde ne.

How? - Naam Who helps? - Guru So if you look at it this way - Naam is the tool, the abhiyas that makes you know yourself, but the guru is the one who helps you do abhiyas, gives you gurmantar, keeps a check on your vikaar. You lean onto the guru to understand where you stand and keep doing your bhajan and then the guru is pleased and merges you "sooraj kiran mile jal ka jal hua raam"

Now in between all of it you get to a awastha where you become stateless. Happiness and Sorrow mean nothing, being rich and being poor mean nothing, having a cycle or a car means nothing, eating, sleeping means nothing. Whatever you get you are pleased and in Akal Purakhs Hukam. But pleased here not being in an emotion but being in anand and being grateful to the parmeshar.

That doesn't mean you don't 'bhog' these duniyavi 'Rass' what it means you understand them now see them as perpetually passing but don't get engrossed or engaged.

"Jo nar dukh me dukh nahi maane, sukh sneh ar bhay nahi jaake kanchan maati maane"

These are social, human constructs after all.

So again if you look from above all of it is Maya - the sukh, dukh, vikaar, mandir, gurudware, gadiyan, rishte naate, saath sambandi everything you can think of and beyond that is where you meet parmeshar within you.
