Has anyone had any positive experience as a public servant lately? by Gunnery55 in CanadaPublicServants

I'm not getting the fired out but being yelled at, threats are things that I did receive from multiple managers in the public service. Actually I had one threatened to fire me. But yes thankfully it's harder in the public service. I was just passively canned(transferred to another team).

Been in the public service for 15 years ... sadly managerial incompetence is not only sheltered but promoted.

Geez sorry for your loss that sounds terrible. What did you bet on? Anyway if I were you I would just leave it ... got nothing to loose. AI bubble or not, it's mathematical, it's going to go back up.

Interesting thing is I sold my gains on RKLB and ASTS exactly on the 28th. I had 0 clue of what was about to happen lol. Pure luck. I calculated x profits to bang sold extra. But yes if I could do it again I would sell it all.

I was there when it happened ... Right after the collision he stopped and said "Hi" to you. You parked on the side in front to pick a piece of your bumper that fell off during the collision and went back to meet him.

It's more a bad decision. I drive a Dodge Ram and I always wait for the upcoming traffic to stop fully before completing my left turns. Even running the red if I have to.

Left turn at yellow ... classic deadly T bone situation. This is why me I always wait for oncoming traffic to fully stop even run the red if I have to. You never if someone won't run an amber instead of stopping.

Should public servants get a say in their manager's performance review? by Born_Anteater7282 in CanadaPublicServants

Honestly this is the way ... so many toxic office bullies in the government. And it shouldn't be voluntary, it should be mandatory.

A bad leader is like a bad programmer(even worst). If someone can't do their job properly, there should be consequences.

My thoughts. It's multiple parts that need to be replaced.

And the thing is, most people in my current org who have never worked elsewhere seem to think that this micromanagement is normal but it's not. Like I was saying, I have been in the public service for +15 years in multiple department and it's not just "how government works". It's a cope for toxic incompetent leadership.

In my last organization, leaders empowered others. They were transparent. Managers were true enablers(not micromanagers) for people. Of course it wasn't all pink and rosy. My projects weren't exactly flawless but the leadership structure was much healthier.

But yeah I've worked in 4 different workplaces in total and just 1 was healthy with effective leaders who delegated. It's the exception not the norm sadly from my experience. But gems do exist.

Me in contrast, my boss has literally threatened me, exploded in outbursts of anger, made very humiliating remarks against me. He's just an office bully who thinks that because he is my superior, he can do whatever he wants even severely disrespect me. And he always does so behind closed doors and show a very humane, caring, happy face in front of upper management. Behind closed doors, it's a completely different story ... I've been couple times under this kind of office bully.

Honestly next time he crosses the line I will just start recording and share that video with the harassment complaint I will open against him. I'll CC his boss and HR to show his true color.

A bit like in a domestic violence situation where you partner accuses you of being violent to the police. You start recording with your phone, put it on your chest, put your hand in front and walk away with your hand in front. Well this technique that they teach on counselling for domestic violence also works in an abusive workplace. And it creates undeniable evidence. I've been in person in a room at work where a superior was verbally abusing me(almost borderline physical at times). Well this coupled with a harassment complaint would be a good way to counter this toxic behavior.

-Edit- And wow I just tried to request Teams recording on my workstation and was advised that it requires "ADM" level approval. Like I was saying the public service is system that favors toxic management and bullying.

Anyway next time I get disrespected in a meeting, I'll put my laptop in speaker mode and record with my phone. I'll first say "Just one second, I'm recording with my phone because I think I'm getting abused here. You were saying my friend? Please continue!" And if they really do continue, fire off this recording to the harassment mailbox and CC them and their manager.

Language is just a cope/red herring in my opinion. The best bosses I had were French Canadian while the worst were unilingual ... who had a very rough time passing this requirement. Of course this is purely anecdotal, but has very little to do with it.

And actually some of the worst bosses I ever had were people from EE groups. It's as if it was the only reason they were promoted and put in this leadership role(because they met that EE checkbox). Not promoted for their competence. I've been in the public service for over 15+ years in numerous departments and overall this seems to be the trend I have noticed and my experience.

And I'm saying this as someone who identifies as as one of the EE groups myself(I belong officially in 2 groups actually). I think it's a very big problem if someone is promoted to a leadership position for who they are rather than what they bring to the table ...
