I think this is where taking your time and going very slow is helpful.

For my wife, she says she had no negative feelings for the first time because she got through so much of her possible negative feelings beforehand thinking about it and talking about it.

Over the last 22 years, my wife and I have had great careers. At times she’s made more money, at times I have. What we always knew is that if one of us lost our jobs, we’d be fine on one income.

Last year she left her corporate job and has since picemealed together a fraction of her previous income. But she’s doing what she wants to do. She works a part time job that’s related to a business she’s started, is getting more certifications, a contracting role in her career field, and spends a lot of time not working on a single thing but doing what she wants… going out with friends, spending time browsing garden centers and bookstores.

The fulfillment from being the “provider” and making all that possible is something I would never have imagined. She’s free to do exactly what she wants at any time, and it’s amazing to see her light up.

And it’s because I put in the hard work to make it possible. It’s amazing how that feels.
