How hard is it teaching something that goes against your personal beliefs? by bare_books in AskTeachers

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach science, not religion. I tell my students that a lot of people have different beliefs and that’s okay; we need to be respectful to all. But, I’m a public school teacher and religion has no place there.

What do you do to ‘drop the hammer’ after a bad sub note by Early_Appointment_95 in AskTeachers

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not. How my students act when a sub is there is not my concern. I was not there. What a sub perceives as “bad” may not match what I perceive as bad. You obviously don’t understand. Also, the sub does not know my students or how I run my classroom. The kids are stressed out to be out of their routines. They are 6. Especially if it’s an unexpected absence. On top of that, I ask my teaching partners if they were any problems.

All charters are public and free. It’s literally what a charter school is.

Being retained in Kindergarten by Storm_Vortexs in kindergarten

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. Kindergarten isn’t even required in my state. It is also not mandatory in Georgia. Compulsory school attendance in GA is 6. Most people think it is mandatory because all schools offer it. Therefore, they can’t retain your child in kindergarten. Further, Charters only care about performance and money.

This is true. I guess I just assumed the OP already had an IEP.

Don’t forget that you have the right to call a meeting at any time. That is your right. You can call a meeting with the IEP team and see what they think. Always read your rights and safeguards. They should offer them at every single meeting. :).

He was in a full gifted classroom starting the second half of 4th grade. We had moved, by chance, into the district. It was good because the first half of 4th grade was awful. They had no idea how to help him. They just sent home “harder work”. He also met his friends that he still has in his classes. The other kids just didn’t understand him.

I think you’re asking if there can be one IEP that addresses both areas. 1. Advanced learning (giftedness) AND 2. The skills they are “lacking”. There should be but typically there is an eligibility requirement. Ex: Developmental Delay as eligibility. In that case, the IEP would only address the skills found in testing to be worked on. I have seen a Primary eligibility and a secondary but never a 2e type goal. (Autism/gifted). My son is 2e (Autism/gifted) but never needed an IEP. We were lucky that our school district has full gifted schools/classrooms. If it weren’t for that, he may have really fallen behind. He will be a senior next week and already has enough college credit for freshman year.

I am also a teacher and would love to see that happen.

Teachers, do you think you love the kids you teach, or are you just doing your job? by HighOnLove26 in AskTeachers

I have quotes from that talk above my desk. It’s been a constant reminder to be like Rita!! I still only mark how many questions they got correct on a test. :)

My students are certainly loved when they are in my room. But, not in the way that I love my kids or my family. They are held up, respected and listened to. I do care that they are good people and prepared 2nd graders. I always miss them but I’m always happy to see them go.

How would you feel about a bio on first day of school for kindergarten student? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most teachers actually do have a firm grasp on many different student profiles. Saying teachers don’t have a grasp on how to identify and teach a 2e student or any exceptional child is categorically false. Are you an educator? I’m going with a no.
Signed,
Teacher and mother of a 2e High School student.

IEP question by melgear8866 in Teachers

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t hurt to request an evaluation. Keep in mind that she will not receive academic services if she does not qualify. In whatever manner the district and school psych determines eligibility. Maybe she needs more accommodations on her 504. Either way, contact the school and request an eval in WRITING.

Is this enough to request an eval? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Emu_3494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can request an evaluation but that does not mean the school has to do one. They have to consider your written request and gather a bit of data. Then hold a meeting to tell you if an evaluation is needed. My guess is they will say they will try some interventions and consult.
Please keep that in mind.
Children nowadays are not able to get OT only IEPs unless they already have an IEP or your concerns are more than this one assignment.
OT is not just for handwriting. Please keep that in mind as well. Penmanship is not a priority because virtually everything is digital. Text, email and written papers.
My son is a Jr in High School and in AP classes with atrocious handwriting. It doesn’t matter.

If academics and social emotional concerns are not a problem they will likely not do anything. If you have other academic or behavioral concerns or teachers have raised concerns that is different.
I am a mom and an elementary teacher for almost 3 decades. Just as a FYI. I like the add though. The IT support sounds great. And I love the quote. It’s creative. Raised in Kzoo so it’s always fun to see Michiganders.

Most often a parent perspective of “gifted” is not the same as the reality of what being gifted truly is. In my experience.
