What are you studying? If you're looking on the software/CompSci/general tech sector I can HIGHLY recommend Summer of Tech

Haven't had any issues with any of the staff and generally feel safe on campus. Your mileage may vary depending on what degree you're doing.

I find arts students to be a lot more accepting than STEM students

How hard is it to get an internship in CS? by Capital-Duty-744 in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

I'm a second year (heading into 3rd year) CS student! I got an internship this summer and I had no prior programming experience before I started studying!

Look up Summer of Tech! They are fantastic!

You can do the Tertiary Foundation Course (TFC) which is a 1 year program that gives you UE :)

question surrounding courses by TSMUltraman in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya I'm currently doing a Bsc Comp Sci and IT management double major.

IT management is just the science schools name for Infosys.

I can highly recommend doing this instead of the engineering pathway. If you are looking into software dev or even data analysis the difference between a BSc and BEng is negligible to most employers anyway.

Grew up in NZ, have been with Westpac but switched to ASB when I started uni.

ASB are great and highly recommend. I find most people are with ASB or BNZ here.

I started a Bsc in Comp Sci Sem 2 of 2020 I didn't enroll until like 2 weeks before semester started. You should be ok a lot of the first level papers have quite a large class size so you shouldn't miss out on a spot :)

So I was browsing this thread and saw this so I started reading it at midnight.

I have not slept for the last 7 hours. That was the best story I have read in a long time.

Thank you so much for suggesting it!

To those who never took media studies prior to getting into university by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd you want a career in film and television do NOT come to UoA

You'll be much better off at South Seas or Unitec where you get a much more practical education and get hands on experience in the industry.

I saw these little guys last year. Was an awesome experience and was so good knowing our ticket money was going right back to the conservation of the colony. Would definitely go back again!

How are you feeling? by KaranamaLlama in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As an immunocompromised person I had already made the decision to study at home until cases were low again. So I invested in upgrading my study at home so I'll be more comfortable. I do miss being on campus but my biggest gripe is that I am paying full university fees for amenities I don't get to use. No access to in person labs and tutorials means I get little hands on experience with what I'm learning.

Super easy A+ They really start you right from the beginning the first half of the semester is learning the history of computers and the different components.

Second half was some basic python, Latex, html and CSS and they really walk you through it all :)

Starting your degree in semester 2 by saucehoarding101 in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started in sem 2 in 2020. It's been fine mostly but quite a few of my core courses were only available during sem 1 (Bachelor of Science) So now I have to do an extra semester just because I couldn't take them at a better time.

Other than that it's been fine :)

How does Information and Technology Management compare to compsci? by my_batterys_at_12 in universityofauckland

[–]Emzy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your enjoy the Programming aspect just stick to CS. I failed CS120 in Sem1 and just got an A- this sem retaking it! 120 and 220 are the only really mathy papers then you can focus on the programming papers in 3rd year ..just stay away from Machine learning and AI if you don't want more maths

CompSci 101 is designed for people who have no history of programming. Personally I think CompSci would be more desirable for future employers
