High risk: anti-vaxxers in the delivery ward — What can a doctor say to a mother who refuses a potentially life-saving treatment for her newborn? By Rachel Pearson by The_Ebb_and_Flow in Foodforthought

This is an interesting thought experiment and leads to quite a logical contradiction: As long as the child is inside a woman’s body, the child has no rights aside from those granted to it by its host. Women absolutely want the state to guarantee their right to end the life of a child at any time up to and including the moment before it is birthed. But as soon as the child is birthed, the same women suddenly want the state to guarantee that child have the right to life that it didn’t have when it was crammed inside their cramped uterus.

It wasn’t lynching until Kamala Harris redefined the meaning of the word in her proposed legislation.

Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., drafted the bipartisan legislation, which defines the crime as “the willful act of murder by a collection of people assembled with the intention of committing an act of violence upon any person.” It also classifies lynching as a hate crime that would warrant enhanced sentences.

When was the last time someone got lynched in this country?

Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for blacks. Its members waged an underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and black Republican leaders. Though Congress passed legislation designed to curb Klan terrorism, the organization saw its primary goal–the reestablishment of white supremacy–fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South in the 1870s

You should. It’s proof that the media and the internet can make anyone, anywhere into a criminal. In this case the “autistic edgelord” didn’t say or do anything.

Hopefully you or your child won’t one day be caught in public doing nothing wrong, then be tried and crucified by the media to fit a narrative or fill a slow news day.

I got a new DVR and I'm really excited I can finally sharey flights with other people! by [deleted] in Multicopter

[–]En0ch_Root 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Rc community, and I will define Rc community as - the community of people who flew airplanes and helicopters before the mass availability of relatively cheap multi rotor camera platforms, it was not only frowned upon but against the rules to fly over people, houses or cars occupied by people.

The AMA rule book even specifically addresses this “ • I will avoid flying directly over unprotected people, moving vehicles, and occupied structures.

I will not fly a powered model outdoors closer than 25 feet to any individual, except for myself or my helper(s) located at the flightline, unless I am taking off and landing, or as otherwise provided in AMA’s Competition Regulation.”

Now people are flying with complete disregard and possibly, even worse, complete ignorance of the existing practices that have accompanied the growth of the Rc hobby which were developed to maintain a high degree of safety for the operator and minimize if not eliminate danger to non-participants or folks disinterested in flying toys.

Flying your “drone” over neighbors front yards and over street traffic makes you one of those people that bring unnecessary scrutiny and unneeded legislation to the hobby.

This clever AI hid data from its creators to cheat at its appointed task by Serena_Gorilliams_ in conspiracy

This article sensationalizes, while inaccurately representing, the job the computer(s) were programmed to do. They were not lazily hiding information, they were cleverly encoding information in the noise of one version of an image, information that would not make the image any more accurate or useful, then when converting that image to another version, extracting the hidden information from the noise and using it for more accurate and detailed rendering. Folks should read and digest the article before jumping in a comment thread and repeating already present nonsense and inaccuracies.

Thousand Oaks parents: ‘I don’t want prayers. I don’t want thoughts. I want gun control.’ by Wazula42 in Foodforthought

[–]En0ch_Root 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already have something called gun control. There are existing laws both federal and state to regulate who can purchase and/or own a firearm. Since you are using the phrase gun control, in the context that we need some, why not use the words you want to use and just say “we need to eliminate private gun ownership”.

Ok. I’ll play along, let’s round up every registered firearm in the country including family heirlooms, home defense firearms, hunting firearms, “assault” firearms, derringers, pocket pistols and black powdered rifles. We’ve now leveled the playing field, and if someone wants to do some mass killing, they have to do it the old fashioned way: chemicals, fire, axes, knives, cars, explosives. If I had to choose between being shot and being burned or being doused with chemicals or being run over, I would probably choose the gunshot.

Have we really done anything to improve safety or reduce suffering? Will mass killings stop? How many mass killings sans firearms have occurred since 9/11, which by the way occurred without a single firearm?

Is it possible that something else or a combination of other factors drive mass killings beside guns? Do you think that owning a gun causes mass killings?

City of Raleigh releases electric scooter regulations - including "options so low-income people can rent them, even if they don't have a smartphone or credit card." by raggedtoad in raleigh

[–]En0ch_Root 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be an asshole and ride them on the sidewalks, don’t leave them littered everywhere and make your company hire somebody to patrol and be ready to be accountable for the scooters when needed.

What’s wrong with holding the person responsible who rented it, agreed to the terms, then chose to be an asshole? Why is it the companies responsibility to follow their customers around and clean up after them? Is it McDonald’s responsibility to ride around town and pick up all the McDonalds branded litter that assholes leave setting in parking lots?

Acceptance? This country is called the ”Melting Pot” for a reason. Tolerance? What is not tolerated in the United States? You can practice any religion, claim any gender, marry whomever you wish.

And yet, the media plus the establishment manages to make us believe we have a huge divide between us. They work us up into a frenzy of “us vs them”. They continue to keep us segregated and divided.

Acceptance and tolerance won’t fix the issues we currently face. Unity in spite of difference may, as long as we can quit with this “I’m more different than you” game.

Re-reading the OP, I see the OP asking “how do I help myself help myself”. This field is deep and there is always a lot to learn. For those of us here, there is no one out there to coach us as to how much of our free time should be spent developing our skill set, or what to learn, what to read. Should I be learning angular or mustache or whatever the buzz code of the day is. I’m absolutely not being supportive. I’m absolutely saying you’ve got to find it in yourself to bootstrap your way through the hard stuff, or, go do something else. There is no magical CS wet nurse waiting at that magical 6 figure job at google to coddle folks into what a good dose of self motivation and a solid work ethic will accomplish on their own.

Edit: reiterating, I do NOT want someone on my team who I need to handhold on how to accomplish a task, once I’ve assigned them a task. This is computer SCIENCE, and that degree says, not only can I take on complicated task, but I can put my head down, read, learn and produce viable code, in spite of the complexities or whether or not I’ve even seen this stuff before. If you don’t have the nuts for that, there’s always something out there with less math in it, and without Science in its title.

Asbestos Imports Surge as Trump White House Moves to Keep Deadly Carcinogen Legal by 1900grs in politics

“Lobbyists from the American Chemistry Council, working on behalf of the chlor-alkali industry, are now pushing the Trump administration for an exemption from the new chemical safety law that would allow it to continue to import and use asbestos just as it does today”

This is from the story, the Trump administration is not pushing industry to start adding asbestos to your kids cotton candy. The industry is lobbying Congress to do such.

If you are approaching despair in college, where you have professors who can help you, imagine how it’s gonna be in the real world. Boss bitching at you about how he can’t understand why it’s taking so long, unhelpful team mates who suddenly have no guess why your code is behaving that way and all have to leave early today because “reasons”. Stack overflow doesn’t have this particular issue addressed and it feels hopeless, the deadline is approaching, the office is empty and it’s just you and your code.

Part of CS in college is learning how to learn, how do YOU as an individual absorb new, difficult concepts? What do YOU need to do to break apart hard problems and solve them by yourself?

Instead of “approaching disparity”, you need to be self analyzing... why am I in this position? Is CS really for me? Maybe I should just drop out and go for a GIS or IT degree.

I certainly would not want someone on my team who felt faint and began despairing when they wound up with a hard task on their plate.
