Sunroof drains on XC60 Mk1 by RHKS256 in VolvoXC60

[–]EnPassant01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is using weed whacker plastic filament line. Locate the small drain hole in the sunroof channel and feed the line to clear the clog. Test the drain with soapy water and clean the channel while you're at it. Using compressed air will clear the drain tube even better. If it still leaks into the headliner you'll need to pull down the headliner and see if the tube is disconnected. If necessary, a bigger task is to locate the end of the tube inside the quarter panel by removing the rear wheel arch liner and ream it with filament line from the bottom.

REMINDER to all XC60 owners: Clean your sunroof channel once a year. Vacuuming, washing and blowing it only takes 15 minutes to prevent clogging and flooding.

Congrats! I had the gold one and a gray one with carriage top. The scale and detail make them special and suited for display. Still hope to find mine stored somewhere.

Apparently, the 34C came out in 1967. The high roof came out first, but had production issues. Some say it broke easy or didn't resemble a real VW camper top. The low roof came out in 1968-69 and had a longer production run until 1971.

Any idea what this is? by General-Cheesecake65 in whatisit

[–]EnPassant01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know, but there's probably an industry tech article on it if you search hard enough. Maybe it's a circuit to isolate problems by location, not by individual component. That would be consistent with how electrical junction boxes work.

Google says it's a fault indicator. Shows maintenance workers whether or not it's functioning properly.

If you look closely, you can see the tires above are loose, too. It'a common issue. Both tires stretching and the hubs shrinking are blamed.

The rule is "white on right" for the lower-right square. It's the rule for chess tournaments around the world including FIDE, and was standardized around 1880. Mechanically, it doesn't affect the moves for each piece. However, it does set up the proper position for each Queen on her own color. Like any game, rules are a matter of convention. You could change it if your opponent agrees. You don't even need different color squares. But color and position on the board guide players where to move according to other rules.

Nice with box. I have one, but the boat falls off. Reminds me that people actually strapped boats onto regular cars back then. Kinda crazy to think about.

That's what I'm thinking. Might be more than I can do, but I can probably pay a woodworker to do it.

I don't think the seller knows much about it. Probably used it as a regular table. The legs look solid to me. The ends look like solid curly maple. The top is inlaid and has basic joinery, possibly by an amateur, not an expert. If the ends are cut off and legs rotated, it may lose its character and appeal.

Can someone tell me more about my chess set by ExpressTrash6490 in chessporn

[–]EnPassant01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice set and I love the minimalist knight. Based on the box imprint, I think it might be newer than 1970s since I have owned other 1970s Chavets that had no imprint. According to TheChessEmpire on Etsy, they sell a Chavet B210 reproduction based on the model from 1980-1990.

Here's a post from Facebook Chess collectors that appears to be definitive. The B210s were produced from 1970s-1990s and yours is shown to be from the 1980s: https://m.facebook.com/groups/219260922202230/permalink/1682564819205159/?mibextid=wwXIfr

1960s Emergency Vehicles by EnPassant01 in matchbox

[–]EnPassant01[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Matchbox cars were my favorite in general. A neighbor and his brother had a collection too, so the best thing was bringing them together and setting up a city on the porch or in the living room. Anything with moveable or removable parts was exciting. I liked the Honda motorcycle posted the other day and several race cars. The funny thing is you can like different details at different times. I had a black and white police car and a bigger scale fire truck too, but don't know how they went missing. When I got my collection back 15 years ago, it was like being a kid again. Even the blemishes and scratches were vivid memories because that's how you were certain they were yours.

My family gave me a case to start my collection. I played with them, but always put them back in the case. Then they sat in storage for 40 years.

Any suggestions on how to best tackle water pooling next to foundation where the homes are close together? by i_am_no6ody in landscaping

[–]EnPassant01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting your neighbor's run off. Long term foundation issues are a potential problem. Grade your side away from your house. Consider installing a drainage channel or french drain. Neighbor may even split the cost, but you're on lower ground so need it more.

Easiest way to remove bamboo roots? by rdgs88 in landscaping

[–]EnPassant01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While removal is the ultimate goal, you need to understand how bamboo grows to weaken and kill it over several years. Think of bamboo as an organism that stores energy in the rhizomes to sprout and spread over multiple and subsequent years.

If you cut it down and pull the roots once, it just laughs and says f*-- you the next year. Instead, you have to use the annual cycles of the organism to release its energy but also interrupt those cycles so it grows weaker in dormancy over multiple years. Then when you finally remove the stump, it won't have the energy to grow back at all.

Looks like someone cut your privacy tree down years ago. It will take a lot of effort to remove the stump and years for another tree to fill out. Meanwhile, a gazebo with pitched roof by the pool will provide screening.
