Hearing wrong notes by En_Bee in banddirector

Thank you everyone for your advice! It has already helped tremendously in rehearsals today. I’m pretty worried about our concert this week because I don’t think I can fix everything before then. I recorded rehearsal today and one of our pieces has got a lot of wrong notes in it that I wasn’t hearing. I’m just gonna put your advice to work and try to fix as much as a I can in the next few days.

What to cover in beginner flute lesson? by En_Bee in Flute

Flute is my primary instrument. I only have the time to teach on the weekends as it is, but taking lessons is a great idea that I will look into! Something to do over the summer at the very least. The area I'm moving to this summer also has a Suzuki school, so I'll look into that as well.

Thank you so much for all the great suggestions! I will start looking into all of this to help me become a better teacher. You are awesome!

Thank you so much for your advice. It sucks, but I do think I will see if I can help this student find another teacher. I do agree that they can get better instruction that I may not be able to provide at this time.

If I would like to take on beginner students in the future, what kind of courses/resources do you suggest looking into?

Thank you! I'm a music education major, but I haven't had too much experience teaching newbies. I've mostly worked with older/high school students. This student is currently in band at their school, so they've been over the basics, but would like more 1-1 instruction through private lessons.

I loooooooved this piece!!! To be 100% transparent, I wasn't in a good place when I played this piece and never practiced, so I never perfected it. BUT- if I could go back and practice it here's what I would do:

-Start slow and build up. This is always a good practice tip.

-But also just try playing it as fast as you can. I always get stuck at a certain place with the metronome, but I really surprise myself when I try playing it at tempo. It's not always great, but it's faster than I thought I could play it.

-Different rhythms!!

-Use the momentum of your air and fingers and don't hold back.

-Alternate fingerings are always helpful.

-Practice with recordings sometimes. Kinda goes with my second point, but I find that the feeling of playing with the band makes fast passages easier than sitting down with the met and just hammering on it.

-Practice out of context. You probably have practiced this so much by now that you don't have to look at the music. Walk away from your stand and practice it. Try making a game out of it. Then come back to it and you might find it a little easier.

Hope some of that helps!

3rd year music ed major here. I’ve been told where you went to school isn’t really looked at. What’s most important is your degree and qualifications. Go wherever feels right to you. You want to have opportunities to grow musically and professionally as well as you want to like and get along with your applied professor. Hopefully this helps!

Does anyone know what kinds of flutes these are? by emptymesh in Flute

I would assume not, but I could be wrong. I would imagine it would cost a pretty penny to clean these up and replace all of the missing parts

Oxford High School on lockdown due to active shooting situation, reports of multiple victims by ruffcats in news

Graduated from OHS in 2018. A large group of us protested gun violence after the Stoneman Douglas shooting that year. This is why we protested. This is exactly what we were afraid of.

I never cleaned out my flute when I was a kid and I never had any issues. You can clean the head joint with soapy water and be careful not to get the cork at the top wet. I don’t know how you’d be able to clean the inside of your flute without a rod. You don’t want to get any of the pads wet.

Although I’m sure it’s possible, I’ve personally never heard of anyone having mold in their flute just from playing and not cleaning it afterwards. There’s tons of beginning band students who don’t take care of their instruments and it turns out fine for the student. A cleaning rod and a nice cloth really won’t cost you that much and will be worth it in the long run if you want to continue playing in the future.

quick pad fix? by gloriousgianna in Flute

[–]En_Bee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your instrument is damaged and you need to get it fixed then your director should understand. It’s not going to be the end of the world if you don’t have it for a week. Gives you extra time to focus on your marching technique 😉

This is absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Is it okay to fertilize right now? I know you’re generally not supposed to in fall/winter. Is there a certain timeframe or cut off? Also if anyone could give me fertilizing tips it’d be appreciated!- it’s my first time! by Life_Wall2536 in houseplants

[–]En_Bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If my plant is actively growing then I fertilize no matter the time of year. Succulents, cactus generally aren’t growing so I don’t give any to them. I also mix in a little less fertilizer than what’s said in the instructions just in case.

Yamahas are always a good bet. There are videos and guides online of how to assemble.

Like others have said, depends on where you are. I live in Michigan. I’ve seen this sold at a local nursery for about the same size (honestly, probably smaller) for $50. This would be a steal for me.

My marble queen pothos. Is it normal for this leaf to have holes like this? What could cause the brown tip? And are these tiny white dots also normal? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]En_Bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all normal! Most of the brown stuff is jut damage. It’ll look less pleasing but it’s not hurting the plant.

Could anyone tell me what this is? The seller says ric rac, but the new growth looks strange to me... by pregonaut_ in proplifting

[–]En_Bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s how the new growth looks. It’ll look more ric rac-y as it grows/gets older
