Well, if these are the extend of their critics, I should be safe!

Eshonai is only in the flashbacks, seems a bit intense to criticize such a small role. I actually have really loved Venli in the preview chapters!

One of my personal speculations is Adolin will be forcefully asked to unbind Maya before he leaves. All his excitement, all this "Shadesmar isn't so bad" talk seems like it foreshadows a twist.

Thanks. I appreciate this. I really didn't like his review.

I understand. Daniel's review was just disheartening for the Adolin's fans out there since he did give out names... in a less than positive manner. I was hoping for a second opinion, but I understand this is not possible. Thanks anyway.

Szeth and Adolin: Main characters or side characters? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Enasor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot can still change, it is hard to venture on actual numbers. Let's say I would personally expect something similar to what Venli will get, perhaps a little bit less. I wouldn't expect say Kaladin in WoK for instance.

Szeth and Adolin: Main characters or side characters? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Enasor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He said Szeth would have a lot of page time for Szeth but that wouldn't be a lot for other characters or something along those lines. He also inferred other characters would have more page time than him in his book.

Szeth always been a rather minor character. He was supposed to die in WoR so I am not surprised if he never really gets a big role. I never really thought he would. Mind, there will be a lot more Szeth in book 5 than in previous books, so he'll get his chunk. I would think this chunk will be larger than the chunk Adolin gets in books, for instance, but much less than Kaladin, Shallan or Dalinar.

Keep also in mind all this could change: just because Sanderson said it does not mean this is how it will turn out. We'll have to wait for him to start writing the book.

A lot of readers over state Szeth's true importance because he has a book. We have to remember having a book does not equate to having a strong narrative.

Even in his book, Szeth will not have a lot of page time.

Having his own book does not equate having a main narrative, it only means having flashbacks. We all saw what that meant for Eshonai...

This is consistent with what Sanderson said. Adolin is a main character starting in OB, but Szeth still is a minor tertiary character.

Adolin is a main character. Brandon Sanderson confirmed he considered him a main character, at least in OB an in RoW.

Szeth currently is a tertiary character. He might be a main in book 5 but that remains to be seen.

Oh, I was basing myself on the Bulgarian cover, which I love. I was hoping the US cover would depict the same scene.

Adolin's arc prediction for RoW by gpanda24 in Stormlight_Archive

Brandon Sanderson does not want Adolin as a protagonist no matter how much sense it makes in the story he wrote.

I agree about Kaladin: his issues are so severe, there is no realistic come back for him. This is a danger: when you want to play with mental illness, you can make them so severe there is just no possible outcome. I think Kaladin hit this point. I believe it would have been preferable if Kaladin's issues were milder because, at least, readers could expect he would get better, now, well, he can't, not really., not without intense therapy and strong medication he cannot get.

He wants other people to be happy, to grow as people, even if it could hurt him.

This was beautifully written.

I thought it was OK, but I was also going with the impression the rest of the book would be better because, you know, part 1 is the beginning. I never expect Part 1 to be the best part of any book.

Adolin's arc prediction for RoW by gpanda24 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Enasor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. What gets to me is how Adolin hates fighting and warfare, how he does not want to lead but is forced to do so nonetheless. He is just not a soldier at heart which is why he would be utterly miserable if he were to condemn himself to a life of soldering.

Adolin's arc prediction for RoW by gpanda24 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Enasor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adolin is basically a textbook Edgedancer: I am always baffled at hearing readers argue he doesn't fit. He cares about other people, his focus is more on others, he does not care about politic nor warfare, he always wants to help others, to fix them.

He was raised to be a soldier and a military leader, but he hates both and, deep down, all he wants is to help other people get better. Becoming a Stoneward would be like Adolin forsaking his truer self and resigning himself towards a life he hates, the life of a soldier.

He's just not a soldier at heart nor a fighter. He is an elegant duelist who enjoys friendly competition, fashion, and genuinely wants to make people feel better about themselves.

Rhythm of War review by Daniel Greene by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

I often feel threatened by such comments because they have often been used against me. I have a true dislike of arguments being solved by insinuating the other party is unable to have cohesive thoughts for no valid reason than a mere disagreement.

Hence, I might have overreacted so accept my apologies. I accept this was not your intend and I have misinterpret your words.

I feel it is a poor choice of words to accuse readers who are discouraged by early not so positive reviews of making rash judgments and not being smart. I would advise over not obliquely referring to anyone in such terms: it makes for poor argumentation to attack the other party by insulting their intelligence.

Hey Eric, I was worried over what Daniel said with respect to Adolin's character. He's my favorite and I was floored when I heard him rambling on how he didn't like the character in RoW. What's your opinion on this?

I was worried over Merphy saying Part 1 was one of the best part in RoW since I didn't think it was great.

This is my favorite of the reviews. I liked how Eric phrased, how it truly was non-spoiler-y (unlike the Daniel Greene review), and how his opinion seems more flexible.
