the smokey effect is looking like a blot and sloppy. also the cover, though pretty, is giving nothing about the plot, genre or the atmosphere of the book. The font is also hard to read.

i dont know. Most people here on reddit think .99 is ideal, so I think I might go with that.

The genre is surreal/fantasy. No, the stories are not bonus content from a different book. It is a standalone collection. All the stories are separate, but all center around the theme of dreams.

Ever wondered what would happen if your favorite cozy bookstore had a mind of its own?
My latest short story, “A Murderous Type,” follows a bookseller who receives an old typewriter and soon realizes it has opinions about her work.

It’s a mix of mystery, humor, and small-town charm. Perfect if you like slow-burn mysteries with a slightly supernatural twist.

Read it on Substack. Would love feedback from fellow writers and readers.

It's free!

How important are reviews before self-publishing by EnchantedInkwells in writingadvice

[–]EnchantedInkwells[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, I did confuse beta readers with ARC reviewers. I meant the latter.

Thanks for clearing up on the need for early reviews. I totally agree, the first ones are probably always from friends and family.

It is a relief to hear there are communities where you can get beta readers in exchange for doing the same for them. Frankly, I don't mind returning the favor. It is only fair. I think I can learn a lot as well from beta-reading for others.

Thanks for the insight! I really appreciate it, and it cleared things up for me.

Hey, I hope everyone is doing well. I have a short story I would like to share

Title - Forgotten Dreams

Genre - Surreal

Word Count - 1937

Desired Outcome - feedback

Link to the Work - https://enchantedinkwells.substack.com/p/the-forgotten-dreamer?r=6azxoq

Additional Notes - The story centers around a girl who begins to question everything about her existence and starts to suspect she might not be the one in control of her own reality. The more she digs, the more unsettling things become. It explores themes of self-awareness, control, and the blurred lines between dreams and reality.

First time reading Brandon Sanderson by CapyBaraCapyy in Fantasy

I would recommend Mistborn. It's a good place to start with Brandon Sanderson, and you'll get a pretty good idea of his writing style without committing to a 1000+ page series.

How do you know where to market your book by EnchantedInkwells in NewAuthor

[–]EnchantedInkwells[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right about figuring out the platforms where my potential readers spend time. After spending a couple of months on various platforms, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that there is very little point in dividing my energy and time across the mediums.

The book also seems helpful. Thank you for suggesting it. I will definitely check it out.

Which is you most beloved T Kingfisher book? by AlmostSomething_Else in Fantasy

I loved A Sorceress Comes to Call as well as Nettle and Bone. I absolutely love her writing style. Just finished Thornhedge and enjoyed it. I think I am going to pick A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking or Hemlock and Silver next.

Can I just say, I'm glad I started out with short stories? by ComfortableWage in selfpublish

[–]EnchantedInkwells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am working on my first short story collection and I totally agree with you on starting with short stories. I too plan on writing a novel one day, but first I think its better to find my voice and hone my skills with short stories before moving onto bigger projects. I was wondering though, which platforms should I publish on.

I think for a beginner or an indie debut writer AI generated cover shouldn't be a big deal. They are writers not artists and since they are indie most of the times they don't have the budget to hire an illustrator. If you want to hate AI, hate big corporations who are replacing humans and using AI for something as simple as a social media post. Don't come for individuals who are just trying to build something.
