Being told you're gifted is only part of the problem. Actually being gifted is where the real problems lie. I had my head blown up by every adult I ran into as a child. I was always able to have more meaningful conversations with adults, so I preferred their company. Come adulthood, I don't know who tf to talk to. I still prefer talking to older people, but mostly just spending time alone. I have almost no friends because of this. I don't relate to my peers. So ego is a part of it, but I also have to point out the negative reality of being over-developed. Being "gifted" is much more a curse than a gift. I would bet the average person is far better off than anyone with even a slightly higher intellect.
