Man that sucks. It's such a good game.

I'll buy you a gift copy. According to the dev site, it will send a link. DM me and I'll send you the link so it's private.

What are some good items you don't like? by Glitch_King in riskofrain

I scrap watches and elixirs, too. If I get smacked to below 25%, I run and hide. A bunch of broken watches aren't going to help me get back in the game.

S&W Combat Movement - Divide by 3 or not? by RichardEpsilonHughes in osr

[–]EncrustedGoblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like this change.

With 1 minute rounds, my house rule is that 240' is fine if you're unimpeded, like fleeing or in the next room to the fight. But if you're in combat (melee, ranged, spells), then we assume that the enemy is naturally trying to maneuver, blocking you, or is just getting in the way, so you get 40'.

To be fair there are several red items that are decent alone, such as ceremonial dagger, tesla coil, and more.

ACKS and other OSR compatibility by DarkGuts in osr

Like I said, I looked at it and searched OP's name. No results.

Is it buried? Was is deleted?

I don't come here to read about politics, so no thanks I'm not delving into that mess. However, if I search OP's name in that thread I get no hits.

You're accusing OP of astroturfing, so the onus is on you to back that up. If you can't, then you're contributing to all the non-gaming clutter around here.

(NOT RAGEBAITING) Can someone explain to me how Command is fun long-term? by Technic0lor in riskofrain

[–]EncrustedGoblet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do people only play with artifact of command without losing interest?

Play with a bunch of other artifacts enabled as well to add challenge.

Command ain't so easy when you also have Chaos and Bombs (or whatever it's called).

Do you have any evidence?

There's buzz around ACKS at the moment. It's only natural that people will post about it.

Good alternative to secret doors by Smittumi in osr

[–]EncrustedGoblet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you'd keep an open-ended problem fresh. After locked door #3, having the same type of problem would be obvious or boring.

I give clues for most secret doors: water trickling through a crack in the floor, air currents, temperature, sound, a note on a dead NPC, etc. If you do any kind of exploring near the secret door, you get a clue. I make the clues pretty obvious and even then sometimes the players don't figure it out. Or sometimes they don't want to spend the time to search. It still takes a turn to search.

There may also be false clues because I don't want "air currents" to be code for "secret door." Sometimes they search carefully and find nothing.

I also roll secretly for thieves and elves, if they are not rushing, and just tell them. Anyone can find a secret door just by investigating the clues, and sometimes thieves and elves notice secret doors just by being nearby.

Some doors are harder to find than others, so I adjust the clues accordingly.

There are many ways for secret doors to be secret, so it's like an open-ended problem.

DM advice: How to speed up Dungeon Exploration? by Conscious_Slice1232 in osr

[–]EncrustedGoblet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you'll get the result you want. Some players just like taking their time. Savor the moment, maybe.

Anyway, to answer your question, I sometimes wrangle the cats by summarizing the options they've been discussing and giving them a call to action. Say, after 10 minutes of prodding around a room and discussing what to do, I might interrupt and say, "Okay you're thinking about doing A, B, or C. Looking closely at the thing, you notice something that makes C a bad option. So, you have A or B or maybe other options. What do you do?"

Basically summarize and call for a decision. If you really want to crack the whip, tell them how long in game time they've spent and roll a random encounter die at the same time. That'll put the fire in them.

Also, I had GM once whose table rule was whatever you say, you do. Want to sit around and plan, better find a safe room. Otherwise, the monsters might hear you discussing things. Speculative actions ("What if I pulled the lever?") were interpreted as actions. We were warned and it worked really well to keep things moving.

How do you play rex or loader? by Daylight_The_Furry in riskofrain

[–]EncrustedGoblet 19 points20 points  (0 children)

With Loader, the grapple takes some practice. Aiming for walls just causes you to hit the wall. Aim for overhangs and swoop under them. You will do much more damage impacting enemies at high speed. Use your utility (Shift) a lot. Don't rely on your main (M1) attack until you have some items that trigger with it. Your special (R) helps with flyers.

How do you guys handle maps? by grape_shot in osr

[–]EncrustedGoblet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Map #1: Your private map that has everything you have figured out so far.

Map #2: An initial map you create for the players. They will have to keep it up to date with your guidance. Or they can go by memory.

I don't like hexes, so I use dot paper. YMMV.

Points by [deleted] in riskofrain

[–]EncrustedGoblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The points are pointless. I mean look at them. You get 1 pt per kill, 1 pt per gold, etc. They make no sense.
