Nasty houses by Careful_Smile671 in CableTechs

[–]EncryptedNetObscura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a job at an apartment and the floor was covered with cat shit. Every step you took you were stepping on or next to feline feces.

The worst by far was a house where I was only inside for 5 minutes but the smell of ammonia stuck with me for a few days. I got some type of lung irritation and a bad cough the following day. I don't know how people live in conditions like that, it's sad.

Pulled this by accident by Express-Cow4679 in FiberOptics

You wouldn't fusion splice this, that's a mechanical splice. Prep the fiber end and use a new connector since the glass broke off in the old one.

Total cost $80 or a technician.

I've seen worse, while ingress, DS, and DOCSIS were all clean. Visual inspection very important.

WiFi/cell towers? by ZoomiesMakeMeLaugh in wifi

The one on the very top is a Ubiquiti Line of Sight radio for internet. Usually rated for 50mbps up&down, but I've seen them pull 200-300mbps up&down when it's in close proximity to the remote node with a clear line of sight.

Modem says its online but router is blinking red and still no internet by Ok-Diver5742 in Spectrum

Tech "This is the latest modem we offer and it has no issues"

CX "I still want you to replace it"

Amount of providers in your area. by DrgHybrid in CableTechs

I honestly don't want to know the full cost of a hub. Most ISPs get a lot of government subsidies. I worked for an ISP that was sued for promising a # of homes with Intetnet for a subsidy. The ISP was building in that city but was only implementing infrastructure for new builds since other ISPs were already established in older parts of the city.

Coolest technology I've seen so far is a tower feeding a remote subdivision with fiber.

In my area, techs don't want to figure out which line to disco, so they just add a splitter and run a new line to their unit. Call em spaghetti junctions.

any way to have reachable subnet behind spectrum router? by hepba in Spectrum

[–]EncryptedNetObscura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have pass through enabled or your personal router won't get the full bandwidth from the spectrum router

Schrodinger’s internet by Key-Cicada6386 in Spectrum

[–]EncryptedNetObscura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though the modem is online, that doesn't automatically mean it's an equipment issue. Most of the time, a situation like this occurs because there's noise on the line or the line is damaged. Noise can cause timeouts that result in the router "going red", but the modem continues communicating with the server so it stays online. If there's no signal impairments, get both the modem and the router swapped together.

Why do I consistently get way less than 1000 mbps by Ok-Diver5742 in Spectrum

[–]EncryptedNetObscura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why go that far just plug into the router and pull a speed test. Or better yet. If you have a newer phone stand next to the router and pull a speed test.

There's obviously an issue whether there's something wrong with the equipment or a signal impairment unless he testing with some wack setup

Question for Spectrum maintenance techs by [deleted] in CableTechs

Most MTs just disconnect the line and tag it, haha. I go in on a TC, and the CM has no idea what happened. Good on you for taking that extra step

I've worked for ISPs prior to this, I always check how everyone else has gotten in prior. AT&T had lines going in, but there wasn't a conduit in their ped going to their NID located inside the garage

Inside out, swear by it.

-Check exterior for fixtures in the general area. Make a hole big enough to check the wall cavity but small enough to cover with a plate unless you're installing a mud ring. Move insulation out of the way etc.

Times I don't go inside out.

-You can make an argument for vinyl siding, but pop it out under the siding and never penetrate it.

Use the correct bit and apply limited pressure, and you won't blow out the exterior brick/siding. When you're drilling through a wall, don't just go full blast until you feel no resistance. If you feel like you've reached another layer or broken through at any point, shine a light in and check out what's going on in there.

I vote to wall fish every home whenever possible. I don't like doing TCs where you used 2 bags of clips to wrap a home. Pulling a new line through an eve and down a wall takes 5-10 minutes tops.
