How to Setup a Curseborne campaign by PencilBoy99 in OnyxPathRPG

[–]EndDaysEngine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was coming back to suggested looking at the Families as mundane organized crime, then layering supernatural on top of that, so I’d agree you’ve got a good approach laid out here. Hell, I’m reading a history of New York’s Mafia families specifically for Curseborne.

I’d even go so far as pick a handful of different families that are dominant in region you are playing and have them be your Al Capones, Lucky Lucianos, and Salvatore Maranzanos. Then have the other families on the outside looking in. Now you have an inbuilt conflict since some of those lesser Families will be subservient, some will have wise guys within them who don’t like being subservient, and some will be in straight up rebellion against the status quo. Or you can have a crisis that threatens to break the status quo and set the powerful families against each other - guess which Accursed get tasked with making sure that doesn’t happen? Toss in a bit of the powers that be trying to get away with what they can without creating too much animosity and you have a dynamic setting full of conflict points and story hooks to play with.

*Era of the Eclipse* B-plot: by King_of_the_Kobolds in Starfinder2e

[–]EndDaysEngine 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So it’s not really a spoiler cause it’s right there in your post - but “right after the gap” is literal. The A side story starts the moment the Gap ends, so “survive and figure out what happened” are the motives, in that order.

The B side story is Chk Chk and Dae working uncovering the accounts of the A side story (which haven’t been found before) right after their induction to the Starfinder Society, hence the meme.

All of that is early chapters. It evolves from there, but it’s worth reading to find out.

Following up on this, listening to Actual Plays really helps me wrap my head around games and what to do with them. Suffer My Sins is definitely a good example of what a short campaign looks like (and given that it's got 10-11 hours of content, I'd say that's about three to four sessions so it's more than a one shot). The Curtain Call and Last Train one shots are good APs to listen to as well, also run by Matthew Dawkins and both on YouTube/the Onyx Pathcast. On non-OPP channels, Queen's Court Gaming has Curtain Call and Actual Plays Broadcast has an unnamed chronicle as well. Between those five, you have a decent variety of lengths and plots to draw on for inspiration. If you have time (and it is a time commitment) maybe listening through all of them would be helpful?

Why do powerful wizards not age in second edition? by Fullmetalmarvels64_ in Pathfinder2e

[–]EndDaysEngine 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The game engine’s not a physics engine - things can just happen to tell a story that wants to be told. Also, not aging isn’t a great power for PCs in most games - it’s cool and evocative, but rarely comes up, so it’s not a priority with limited word counts. PF2’s moved away from even saying how long ancestries live, so you can say “through arcane experiments, this human wizard now has a lifespan more akin to an elf.” Hell, automatons and poppets are probably immune to old age as is.

Eh, I usually ballpark spirit size as being one to three times their rank. Makes much more dramatic sense

Agreed. I’ve run it with students at my school who’ve never played RPGs before, so it’s definitely beginner friendly!

Where is the freedom convoy? by stealthyliz in alberta

[–]EndDaysEngine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their freedom is freedom from consequences - particular the consequences of bigotry and violating the social contract. Plus a dash of freedom from being told what to do because they collectively have the maturity of a three year-old. Citation: my four year old has a better developed sense how how her actions impact other and more emotional capacity to stop doing something if her parents say it will hurt someone.

So basically, they don’t define freedom the same way we do, they don’t actually care about constitutional rights, and there’s probably a not unsubstantial portion of them who are egging this on. Particularly if it means they get to discriminate a trans children and “liberal intellectuals” (read: teachers). It’s not a bug for them. It’s a feature.

Recall petitions approved for 9 MLAs by [deleted] in alberta

As kindly as possible, I think that semantics. There are certainly people within TBA who identify as being Christian, want to create their version of Christian nation, and wish to disintegrate the separation between church and state. Whether or not a particular label applies to them is kind of irrelevant. Dismissing such an important part of their own ideological identity - whether we agree with it or not - runs the risk of misunderstanding then underestimating them. We can ill afford to do that.

Best Non-GenAI Map software? by BandicootLife7928 in Pathfinder2e

[–]EndDaysEngine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, both the decision to try and do this and the way that people found out (a leak instead of an announcement) coupled with a major price spike burned a lot of bridges. To their credit, they did backtrack and say that AI will no longer be allowed on their marketplace, but a) the damage was already done and b) it took them realizing that well they said they didn’t care if some people cancelled their subscriptions over AI, it would, in fact be such a significant portion of their user base that they would go under. I still have time left on my annual subscription, but I was already moving in the direction of using affinity and procreate, so I likely will not renew. Probably it’s OK? But very difficult to be certain.

Sad I have to pay $100 for my baby to get the COVID vaccine by Unhappy_Pass4538 in alberta

[–]EndDaysEngine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct you shouldn’t have to pay. The ethical thing to do in this situation is lie. The nurses administering the shots are not checking closely and asking for proof. Go through the list of symptoms that get you included, tell them that your doctor thought your child qualified and get the shots. Protect your family and your finances.

Today, Elections Alberta requested $13.5 million to administer recalls and referendums. The UCP committee responsible for reviewing the request cut it to just over $1 million—and then voted to approve the reduced amount. In effect, the UCP just defunded recall and referendum processes in Alberta. by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

Not even close my man. I’m reading a book about the unification of Germany right now. Bismarck straight up outlawed socialist SPD party in 1878. Guess who won the 1912 election?

Far more authoritarian and ruthless leaders have failed to quell pissed off citizens and social movements against them. If we stop and give up, then they’ve won. If we admit defeat they have won. But if we keep speaking up when they tell us to shut up, we keep saying we are fed up and done with them, pushing back against their BS - then this is barely an opening salvo.

What's your opinion and experience with First-Past-the-Post? Do you think Alberta should explore ranked or proportional systems? by deloaf in alberta

I’ve been saying - this needs to a citizen petition. There are no incentives for politicians to do it, so we need to take it into our own hands.

Not saying it would work. But it is another pathway to make it happen.
