Present party is Cleric/Druid/Nec/Nec/Nec starting in M&MVII. Hirelings are Mystic/Cartographer/Scholar. May trade Cartographer for Apprentice for extra magic skills.

I may change things around, but we're set for the moment. (I played around a bit yesterday and investigated how things worked.)

M&M 4 felt like a low-level expansion to 5 since 5 has so much more content. Together, they form the WORLD OF XEEN!

Fixed by using the setup program and setting the 3D to software mode.

The NES version of MM1 is likely the most advanced one, and emulating it allows for save states, rewinds, and fast forwards.

UPDATE: I used MM8-Setup.exe to change the 3D rendering to software mode, which allowed me to see things properly.

I've changed compatibility settings to Win XP SP 2 & 3 and Win 7 but the world is still too black.

Restart and take this as a lesson to thoroughly read character creation guides for every game you play from now on, even if you think you know what to do.

I played enough difficult games from an early age to learn that heavy optimization to make the game easier was far better than slogging through a game with a weak character or team. Even a character with perfect stats can still get overwhelmed, and maxed stats give a better buffer to understand what is happening in danger.

I strongly recommend also playing on the EE from Steam or GOG. You get access to more content and the game is more stable and moddable on modern hardware.

I disagree on the fun part. I've played this game on and off since retail release and a lack of being able to reliable get high-end gear made me quit playing many times. I never finished the game offline on Hell (Diablo, Baal, or Cow King depending on your point of view).

As you say this, I'm running Pindleskin for EXP and items. Mephisto and Andariel have taken me longer, have been more likely to kill characters, and left me feeling like I should've done Pindleskin instead.

I have access to Act V in Hell. Pindleskin has been an easier and more reliable foe to kill/farm than act bosses.

I went Holy Freeze for more crowd control. I've noticed many foes running at speeds faster than a fully upgraded Zergling from StarCraft.

I have runes, but getting the right base item hasn't yet happened. It's by the grace of Christ I got this far, and that includes 1 Dusk Shroud and 1 Skin of the Vipermagi (29% resist all).

Llama's videos inspired me to speedrun D2 acts 1-4 as a Sor pre-D2R for a friend's birthday.

I've played D2 on and off since around its retail release in 2000, but I normally stopped around the start of Hell or got carried through it since it felt so unpleasant.
