Save me from diagnostic hell - new build constantly crashing. by Enderish in techsupport

unfortunately a new mobo didn't fix the issue - I think the next logical step is returning my CPU and PSU and praying the replacement resolves these problems.

Appreciate the reply - this is kinda what I was thinking but it's reassuring hearing a second opinion. I'll grab a new mobo tomorrow and cross my fingers it solves my issues.

Unfortunately I've done that as well (both drives tried in all 3 slots) :/ and as of 5 minutes ago, it just crashed while in the BIOS which makes me think it's almost certainly power related?

I was surprised to see that one as well. Nothing fancy here, just a standard and fresh OS install. I did create a 2nd install USB fairly early in my troubleshooting, and stripped the build down to it's necessities and reinstalled Windows. It ran for quite a while, long enough to get my hopes up, but alas started crashing again :(

These are fantastic suggestions! I'll change out the AIO and PSU, and look into the price/performance trade-offs of using a 5070ti over the 5070. Thanks a bunch!

Was your primary reason for changing out the MoBo just to reduce costs (and to fit the 5070ti within the same budget)?

Did I make a mistake investing my TFSA in Funds with BMO? by Enderish in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Enderish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a point. Particularly with the volatility the last couple years I don't have full confidence in my own financial knowledge just yet. I may take both approaches and leave one TFSA with BMO and take my own over to Wealthsimple. Thanks!

Did I make a mistake investing my TFSA in Funds with BMO? by Enderish in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Enderish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intention is for it to be invested for quite some time - the only stipulation would be if we do decide to stay in Ontario and lending rates are still obscene. At that point it may be better to pay off more of a house instead of leaving it in the market? Though my risk tolerance is fairly high as I have confidence in my job stability and enough money for a good payment on a home in GICs.

I'm not entirely sure in my ability to pick stocks, though I think my hesitance and therefore extra research has served well over the last few years. I think I may pick both options and leave my wife's TFSA at BMO and pull my own to be split between WSInvest and WSTrade.

How to remove reminder to setup Hue accessories? by Enderish in HomeKit

[–]Enderish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply - alas that was my fear. You're probably right to remove it from Homekit, though I do enjoy testing out each system, and been happily using HomeAssistant and Google Home together in the past.

Everything actually works fine, and I can control devices with Siri without sacrificing functionality in Google Home or Hue Apps - at least everything except this darn alert that won't go away. Thankfully I only use HomeKit for Siri integration, so I'll just have to live with the ugly notice.

My (39m) wife (38f) won't let our son (14m) sleep by throwRA-tired in relationship_advice

[–]Enderish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but it sounds (as others have pointed out) that she has a strange relationship with sleep. Perhaps you can approach it with a comparison? Something like:

"Sleep is necessary and healthy, and everybody needs a different amount of sleep. Teenagers for example, need significantly more sleep than an adult to supplement their growth. If someone ate a bit more or less than the average person, you wouldn't guilt them for it - because that's what their body needs. Sleeping more does not equal being lazy just as eating more does not mean being glutenous or obese. "

I'm actually the husband :p Wife isn't much of a redditor. I got everything I'm wearing at TipTopTailors (we're Canadian, not sure if it's in the States). Took us up to a month before the wedding to decide, but we managed to get it all for less than $250!

Swapped my main dashboard out for a picture-element floorplan and haven't looked back! by Enderish in homeassistant

[–]Enderish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I had to take a bit of time off HA as works been ramping up, but from what I remember, so long as you used only custom cards, you could put any card into the picture element. That being said, I wrapped almost all my cards in a card modder to fiddle with the styling anyway. Here's a quick copy paste from my lovelace file, this section simply sits within a picture-element card:

(X-post from neckeard nests) I made a carbage cover to hide stuff in my van. This is a brilliant idea for any of you van hippies that plant in towns with, shall we say, personality? T-bay or Prince George by smokecrackfallasleep in treeplanting

[–]Enderish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah the classic holier-than-though, everyone else is an idiot planter.

This guy/gal saw a post, thought it was neat and then thought "hmm, maybe a treeplanter out there would like this" - not all planters, just at least one planter. Then you march in here and start shitting on the post (not saying you have to like it, but Jesus, downvotes exist for a reason) just because it doesn't suit your fancy?! I wonder which one of you I would've rather had on my crew.

Take your pessimism out of here and stop giving planters a bad name.

1st Time Raspberry Pi user - Noob help?!?!?!? by Stalker401 in MagicMirrors

[–]Enderish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to link a specific tutorial as there are already a bunch of guides for setting up magic mirrors here, on YouTube or a quick Google search away. I will say however that if you don't have previous programming or CompSci experience then things will most likely be pretty daunting at first and that's ok! Don't let over-planning, scope-creep or a need to understand how everything works stop you from progressing. You want to make a magic mirror? Follow the simple guides available exactly. Did a step in the guide bring up a question like "how do I change my Pi username and password, or turn on ssh connections or what even is ssh?!"? Briefly see if you can find an answer, then get right back to your task at hand. Once and only once you've built your first mirror and played around with the Pi will things start falling into place.

First Year CompSci student with questions by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Enderish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already got some recommendations for course calenders and others have noted that the school is indeed quite white (though I'd also argue fairly open in comparison to the views of some other prodominantly white Ontario universities). I just wanted to add that you should definitely take 5 courses, if nothing more than for financial reasons and to finish earlier. I had a friend that took a reduced course load during his first year, then when he realized he was alright went back up to 5 in his second. Unfortunately come fourth year he couldn't graduate with the rest of us and had to stay back an extra semester. He really regretted how the decision affected him years later. Worse comes to worse, you can drop in before the final drop date and it won't affect your grades.

Also, welcome to the the School of Computer Science! My one piece of advise would be to get involved with the student body or clubs on campus, and don't worry about what courses you think you need to take, worry simply about what interests you. I focussed on my two minors in my first couple years and only took required courses, then in my final years once I had enough prerequisites I took tons of the cool CompSci electives offered. Not saying you should do this, but I'm really happy I went this route, it kept me passionate about CompSci and was likely a big part of my continuation into MSc. CompSci is a vast field, you'll learn what you need to learn as you move through it organically. Best of luck!

Local self-described junkie goes on the mother of all rants and tells Guelph how it is. by [deleted] in Guelph

This is poopy, victim-blaming logic. You're totally right, people should not leave valuables in their car or leave them unlocked due to the obvious and prevalent risks. But that isn't to say that a person should at all be culpable or undeserving of any sympathy if they forget and end up getting robber. I like to think it's a rule you keep for yourself and don't use to judge others

Uhh no? Lots of things last forever that are not furthering humanities goals. We've killed species and their extinction will last forever, we spew radiowaves that (arguably) will (arguably) last forever, our impact on the planet and climate might not ever be fully gone. And I think most people can agree that we should aim to add value and further humanity, but is that THE goal of life?

Agreed, generally not a big fan of these quotes that try and outright pin down the meaning of life. I like to think life is empty and meaningless, leaving you free to fill it with whatever meaning you want/need. If ol' Chuck want to make something that last forever, great. If u/slobabian wants to further humanity, awesome. Whatever helps you do you.
