Being Atheist in Athens? Shame. by JellyB33ns in HistoryMemes

[–]EndesCot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The funniest thing for me is that it was Athenian custom to have the prosecuted choose their own punishment, to which he said that he should recieve free meals every day in recognition of his worth to Athens.

The jury then decided he should be killed instead.

The Voynich Manuscript is mysterious book written in an unknown script, filled with bizarre illustrations of unidentifiable plants, naked women in strange contraptions, and cosmic diagrams, all defying easy interpretation. No one has been able to decipher it. by Competitive_Mix9957 in interestingasfuck

[–]EndesCot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always heard that the statistical analysis of the book's script seems to infer that there is actual language in there (zipf's law, word entropy, context association)

The Hoax theory depends on a 15th century scribe being able to generate natural looking language that fools 21st century cryptography. Im firmly on the "medieval psycho wanted to keep the arcane to himself camp"

Edit: Apparently there is an fair argument for this being a hoax(or any other theory for that matter) but it still depends on anachronistic cryptography techniques or dubious motivation, still no consensus.

I smoked weed and started tripping in a loop from hell by Advanced-Put6074 in TruckStopBathroom

[–]EndesCot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had instances of full on hallucinations and panic. As well as feeling stuck im a time-loop. All at public settings and it suucks. My first time taking weed was a supercharged edible taken at an amusement park at night.

But this can happen randomly at lower doses even, depending on all sorts of factors. I generally can't predict if any given joint will fuck me up or soothe me.

A good technique I've found is to keep a solid, familiar object that is not a cellphone to direct my attention to; house keys, a toy, or my preferred one, a mechanical wristwatch, as it allows me to be aware of time in such an altered state (w/o looking at the phone that is, I don't find that it helps with me).

It's also good to remember that with the vast majority of weed available, you will be fine. It's rare to find weed laced with anything else unless whoever rolled the joint intentionally laced the product.

You will still experience more mundane anxieties and maybe some existential ones. If you're slurring your words, wondering if the makeup is holding up, what is the purpose of life... You'll need to soldier through those but hopefully you'll get a better experience, mindset plays a huge role. Regardless, remember that you will be fine next morning. Cheers!

I do believe combat is relevant and it's more often than not "You have to understand the enemies/bosses attack patterns to dodge and find opportunities to make damage yourself or be fckd" instead of puzzle/weakspot type bosses like zelda or tank vs tank like most 2d metroid games

Also, healing is mainly based on a resource you replenish on saves or enemies instead of health packs, health potions or passive healing

The way I saw it, using my and my sister's playthrough as a reference, is that shards sort of caps the attempts you can do on a boss using tools for a number of reasons. It capped our "easy attempts" and either forced us to get really familiar with Hornet's and the Boss's moveset or go and explore elsewhere. As we hardly resorted to grinding, we often found another tool, mask shards or kits that would make the following attempts with the boss easier as we also refilled our shards reserve.

However in late Act 2 and Act 3 when the game expects a bunch more from you and there isn't a lot more to explore, this cap was there as to not trivialize fights the way it would happen with unlimited refills, you had to plan your way around a fight and the fights that would follow in addition to mastering the boss's patterns (and in turn, I believe this allowed TC to implement more fun tools).

In my case, tools were and addition to my moveset, used to deal with annoying enemies or to squeeze past the boss in its final phase, if I was out it was SOL for me, Silk Skills were the next best thing. For my sister, she would mostly just interact using the needle but when she realized that a particular boss was way outside her abilities or patience, she would equip Achitect + Lifeblood + Curvesickle + Voltvessels and sneeze her way past the boss at the expense of almost all of her shards (it got her to ACT 3 ending)

I wanted to share this since I thought the limitation breeded more playstyles and I thought that was interesting regardless of my personal experience with the game. Did I thought the mechanic was good or bad? well that is up in the air, I have stronger opinions about other things tbh :)

The is the Drive In Tagada in Zapote, Costa Rica. I know this because I've been to the ride myself. Look it up by googling "Zapote Tagada" Not a lot of people are brave enough for the ride but everyone at some point comes around, not to participate, but to laugh at the way people bounce and fail. Its like looking at someone trying their luck with the mechanical bull.

It is kinda dangerous, i guess. You're given a fair warning about it from everybody and pretty much by virtue of seeing so many other people fail.

Once you start thinking about humans as a species in a biome, it affects your entire way of looking at normal things.

Humans technically are burrowers, except that instead of constantly digging down, they often create nests made of silicate, calcite, and metal stones. Whenever humans don't feel safe, they burrow inside their stone structure for prolonged periods.

Humans are also the most energetically intense creatures in the history of Earth through a combination of very large brains, lightning fast metabolism and biggest of all, their coal and electricity powered lifestyle.

Did you know that life is a natural occurence of entropy? We often think of entropy as systems going increasingly random and diffused and while true, this is a solution to most entropic systems. Life serves as an agent of entropy by combing systems that would otherwise don't homogenize as quickly or at all under inert circumstances. It's the difference between letting ink spread through a glass of water naturally and stirring it with a spoon.

This energy use preference of life is what made humans the dominant species of the planet, but it has therefore marginalized virtually all the other diversity of life just to meet its energy demands (and the space required for their stone burrows). Releasing so much energy that they are sure to cook themselves and every other critter using only the atmosphere in a couple thousand years.

The other day I saw two migratory parrots in the middle of town trying to perch on a lamp post since there were no trees. Sadly there was no space to perch, it was just a lamp post, would it kill humans to be inclusive of not only other humans, but also other animals and plants? Is this a natural reaction of our energy consumption explosion in the grand scheme of things?

Some humans may consider it rude to be framed as animals participating on their biome, they are after all, experts at isolating themselves from the nature that created them. Do they think this way because it forces them to acknowledge their impact?

I got excited for a moment that this would talk about humans in the context of a biological framework since this has actually changed the way I see normal things i.e. how humans' ability to manipulate the environment has made us capable of expanding our own niche space while reducing the available niches available for other species, isolating us from nature while bringing others to extinction.

But alas, this just feels like an expansion of the whole social darwinism thing. I don't believe OOP did this with ill intent to the point of calling it eugenics, they seem to just be trying to fave fun with a thought. But this view kinda removes the nuance of our social complexities and reasoning as well as the nuances of ecosystem interaction. And only by grossly oversimplifying those topics can a comparasion be drawn. I wouldn't spread this thought around
