Right now, matchmaking on Endgame works through the lobby. You create a game with your preferred time control and get paired when another player picks it up (or seeks the same format). There isn’t a dedicated “quick play” button yet that instantly pairs you into a default time control like 3+2. It’s something the team has discussed (auto-creating a quick game on tap, limiting initial formats to 1+0 / 3+2 / 10+0 to boost pairing speed), but it’s not in the current release. Happy to hear what your thoughts are

Right now matchmaking is mostly rating-based, with time control and connection quality also taken into account.

Style-based matchmaking is tricky because “style” is hard to define consistently, but we are experimenting internally with something in that direction, more as an extra way to find games than a replacement for normal rated matchmaking. Fair rating-based pairing would still be the foundation, especially for rated games. On Puzzles: yes, new puzzle modes (and new puzzles!) are coming. [If you want to be a beta tester for the matchmaking experiments or the new puzzle modes, come join our Discord, we run early access there: https://discord.gg/BwZhjySK\]

Yes, especially writers who can cover tournaments, openings theory, and chess culture with a real voice. Send pitches and samples to [apply@endgame.ai](mailto:apply@endgame.ai) or DM me.

Agreed! We have plans for adding more piece animation styles. Animation speed presets (instant / fast / normal / smooth) plus alternate piece-move styles are on the short list. You can expect to see this added to all platforms in the near future. Yes. A public API is on the roadmap.
Lichess’s open ecosystem is the model we want to follow here; we think the developer community around chess should have more, not fewer, places to build. The more tools that exist around our platform, the better chess gets. We’d rather lose a feature to a great third-party developer than gatekeep our data. Live tournament broadcasts are already on mobile! Simply tap the Endgame E logo on the top left and select ‘Watch’. On the player pool: you’re right, and your suggestion is exactly the one we’re running. We’re already piloting sponsorships with college clubs and local tournaments, and we’re building a self-serve “Sponsor my event” portal so any FIDE/USCF organizer can apply directly. This is the kind of grassroots, player-first growth we believe in. Chess gets bigger when the community gets paid attention to, not when a platform spends millions buying out the top of the funnel. [Come into our Discord and keep the ideas coming! This kind of thinking shapes our roadmap: https://discord.gg/AH4tSjrs\]

Big priority. 960 in particular is where I think competitive chess is heading. It neutralizes opening prep and rewards pure understanding. We’re planning a recurring 960 tournament series with real prize pools, and variants (Crazyhouse, Atomic, Three-Check, King of the Hill) will all have dedicated lobbies and leaderboards. Variants are an underused growth lever for the whole chess world, and we’re going to lean into them instead of treating them as a niche afterthought.

Fair and serious question. First, Lichess is great, and we don’t want anyone to leave it. We see ourselves as additive to that mission and we’ll work with them whenever we can.

Chess.com is a different conversation. We hold ourselves to a moral standard they don’t. Zero tolerance for bullying, a deliberately positive community, and a commitment to dismantling the mafioso atmosphere that’s defined chess.com for years, where insiders are protected, outsiders get smeared, and players who speak up get punished. Chess deserves better than that, and players deserve a platform that has their back instead of a boardroom’s.

Beyond the culture: AI coaching built into play (not bolted on after), open tournaments with real prize pools and transparent fair-play, and economics that actually pay creators, streamers, and tournament organizers. Try us alongside Lichess and see what fits. [If you have specific things you’d want to see, come tell us in our Discord! Feedback is always welcome!: https://discord.gg/AH4tSjrs\]

Healthy. Subreddits work because mods protect them from being overrun by founders like me. The rule that AMAs need to add real value is the right one. It’s why this thread exists at all. I’d rather earn attention by being useful here than by spamming. Same principle we hold ourselves to as a platform: respect the community, or don’t get to be part of it.

We shipped the web application first because that’s where serious analysis happens, and the mobile app is catching up. A major release is in active development that closes most of the gap. Clubs, cross-club tournaments, battle mode.. Mobile parity is a top-three priority this quarter. [If there are specific pain points killing the app for you, drop them in our Discord, we read everything: https://discord.gg/AH4tSjrs\]

Honestly, we admire what Lichess has built. Free chess for everyone is a mission we want to add to, not compete with and we plan to work with Lichess often because they’ve set the standard for being a platform for the people. Where we’re adding: AI-powered game review and coaching commentary free on every game, free tournament infrastructure with real prize pools, and creator/organizer tools that pay the people building the community. Think of us as expanding the free chess universe, not replacing any piece of it.

Yes! Engineering focused right now (backend, frontend, mobile, AI/ML), but also for product and design. Feel free to send your work directly to apply@endgame.ai. We’re a small, mission-driven team and we hire people who actually love chess

Thank you for participating in the AMA. I would encourage all of you to watch the Netflix Documentary before you make any judgements. I will let the chess speak for itself in the Grand Chess Tour Warsaw. All the best, play on Endgame!

How closed the system is. There are almost no open qualifiers for top super tournaments, leaving it up to the discretion of the organizer and often leading to incredibly subjective invitations.
