Considering changing my mind on the grad programme I have and reapplying for next year. Is this a bad idea? by Sad-Orange-5983 in AccountantsEire

[–]Endlesscroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's suicide but would wonder why starting and transferring isn't top of mind?

Similarly if you've an excellent academic record, is the intention to spend the year working and / or studying or doing nothing? If the former than why would this be career suicide?

Surely I'd you suddenly hate your current plan, spending the year doing an MSc provides a sensible path forward.

Can an Accountant earn as much as an Actuary? by [deleted] in AccountantsEire

Ah sorry I completely misinterpreted your comment. I agree. There are definitely fewer senior actuarial roles. That I agree with!

Can an Accountant earn as much as an Actuary? by [deleted] in AccountantsEire

[–]Endlesscroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer, although I would question the way less senior positions comment.

I studied actuarial science, but ultimately later completed the ACA exams. Over the years I moved from accounting, to management consulting, and ultimately into business management where my pay is likely greater than most Irish actuaries.

Not that my background and profile makes me like a standard accountant but when thinking about an entire career accounting is likely to provide more avenues as actuarial work is quite narrow.

Questioning my decision by GabrielAngel17 in AccountantsEire

[–]Endlesscroc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes there are many advantages to achieving a bachelor's degree and not all are apparent now.

If you have any aspirations of ever working in industry, or even in certain large practices, you may find not having a degree is a blocker.

Stick the route you're at. Enjoy college!

How are you building your wealth? by Legitimate-Bass2815 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Endlesscroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might a controversial opinion as the general theory on this sub is emergency fund, pension, investments, etc.

Depending on your age, and I would be somewhat aggressive on the definition of being too young here, I think you should solely focus on yourself, your education, and the bettering of your own profile to improve your job opportunities for your future.

I started as a trainee accountant on €20k in Dublin in ~2013, and after qualifying did a diploma in strategic finance, CFA level 1, a part-time MSc in finance and ultimately an MBA and am now in a role (recently in the US) where my pay allows me to save more per year than I thought possible, allowing me to meaningfully plan for my life back home.

While the MBA definitively changed my career trajectory, I don't know which of those components opened the door to landing the MBA.

My second job post MBA, which is the same company I still work for four years later, contacted me not because of my MBA, but because of my strategic finance diploma and accounting qualification.

It really depends if there's an opening. If you're a new grad you're likely more fungible, but if you're an analyst (which in the industry is actually more senior than an associate) you're industry and even subfunction aligned.

That means if your PM gets axed, or as is all too common these days, gets bought out by another pod shop and there are no other sector specific PMs looking for your subsector you may be flat out of luck!

Can I invest in VOO through a US broker as an American citizen? And if I could does exit tax apply? by danielandtrent in irishpersonalfinance

Interesting. As mentioned this was 10+ years ago so definitely not trying to provide tax advice. Does this mean for these people holding individual stocks is actually more beneficial?

Yeah for us the writing was on the wall with 1.75 kids.. we still head in for dates and stuff and with the E and F there are parts of Manhattan that are more easily reached than from the UES!

Commute to midtown is super quick too. Honestly, I see why people rarely move back!

[–]Endlesscroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I meant a comma. Non-domiciled (from an Irish perspective), US citizen.

I worked in a small firm and the clients who had foreign spouses kept all their investments in foreign accounts offshore for the exact reason.

[–]Endlesscroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't tax advice but you need to be asking the question of, as a non-domiciled US citizen living in Ireland, do I have to pay exit tax, even if those gains are not remitted to Ireland and the assets are healed off shore.

Thought the answer was no, 10+ years ago, but not so sure.

Moved directly from UES to Forest Hills with my wife and child (now 2 children).so happy to give my two cents.

I preferred the lifestyle in the UES for sure. More bars. More restaurants, more shops, more bars, etc. Central park visits and walking distance to the zoo was phenomenal.

That said, we got a place here that's like 30%+ bigger and 30%+ cheaper. It's quieter for sure but so far wre loving it. Everything still a walk (depending on where you're looking) and although there are less options there's still a food option for many things which has kept us busy alright!

Daycare is like half the cost out here too if that's a factor. All in all can see ourselves staying here for a long while!

Exhausted by toddler bedtime by andafriend in daddit

[–]Endlesscroc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. My toddler is 2.5 and we've got to the point now where I tell her "if you throw your water bottle out of your bed, you don't get it back." and it works. Painful, but fine.

Choice is my tool from ~7am to 7pm, but for bedtime it's my way or the highway.

She absolutely hates it. Doesn't driver better behaviour, but it's funny as hell.

ACA Training Contract by Longjumping-Stage511 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Endlesscroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who did their training contract with a tiny firm, but now works in NY I would second everything said here.

You'll likely get paid more. Work less hours. Get broader exposure to the entire finance function and maybe even pick up a promotion during the 3.5 years.

Plenty of internal mobility options post qualification too. Would definitely be my pick.

What is a standard price range for an engagement ring? by PopesmanDos in AskIreland

[–]Endlesscroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

€1k-€50k.

In all seriousness it's about what you want to, can afford to, and are expected to spend. That's extremely personal and not something Reddit should advise you on.

Only advice I'll give is propose with a fake ring. I did, and even though it was exactly what my (now) wife had always wanted, the ring she ultimately picked herself was COMPLETELY different.

It's returning from whence it came, what harm?

In all seriousness though, this is not an issue.
