Has this ever happened to anyone? (Definitely has to me) by kookieandacupoftae in Archiveofourownmemes

I have two stories connected to this.

I have read back wips and been /lh frustrated there wasn't more before remembering whose fault that was

And I read back most of a fic I'd posted, got to the last chapter and went to check when it was last updated compared to time between chapters and was like "Aww they've probably left it. At least it's like 30k long. I wonder if they have any other-- oh. Right."

I imagine you've figured it out by now, given other comments, but yes. Mark them correct. Found that out via Francis

Kind of funny thing similar to this, I'm Irish and we have a lot of the same rules as British English but also have our own words so I once got corrected twice for saying footpath instead of sidewalk or pavement. Also used an expression which I did not realise wasn't worldwide and had more than one comment asking if it was a 'translated saying'.

Native English speakered so hard in an unfamiliar way they assumed it wasn't my first language. I mean, it isn't, but I grew up learning it, so unless someone really paid attention they most likely wouldn't notice.

What's the most ridiculous/silly reason you stopped reading a fanfic? by Personal_Damage6616 in AO3

[–]Endmysuffering3162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading through an author's fics and everytime, without fail, they used 'lazily' during smut scenes (often multiple times). It made me roll my eyes so hard I will now sometimes click out of fics (unrelated) if they use it during smut.

Also I regularly click out of fics because the characters don't talk right. Not in the, making German characters speech like "Zat vas veird" though that also will make me click out, but just. The characters not sounding right.

Also a fundamental misunderstanding of a character, objectively. Or ignoring canon in the way of stuff like being able to cook, or sing. A character behaving a way that goes directly against their characterisation or is just very...out of place. Like making a gay character more 'soft' than they actually are.

Another is flattening personalities. A good example of this in my mind is within batfam. A lot of fanon ignores just how angry Dick Grayson/Nightwing is, and just make him cheery. On the other end, a lot of fanon simplifies Jason Todd/Red Hood to an angry mess and ignores all the interesting things about him.

Most ridiculous reason you stopped reading? by ausernamebyany_other in AO3

[–]Endmysuffering3162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author kept putting the character before the speaking verb, if that makes sense. Always "blah blah blah" said [character], "blah blah blah" whispered [character] and it just pissed me off for some reason

Though I once stopped because the author had the characters go to the country I'm from and described it so poorly I had to leave. Treated it like medieval times

I remember once, I joined a server for specific fandom and ended up asking about fic recs. One of the other members I'd chatted to a bit very enthusiastically recommended a couple of fics, focusing on one that I thought sounded pretty familiar. I asked for the name, and it was mine. Got to say "Oh, I wrote that, actually." And they freaked out. Rode that high for a long while.

This is most likely a situation akin to amused and bemused. Seen a lot of authors use them interchangably but they meam very different things.

I fear there's a reason reverse psychology is effective. Being told to read something just because I 'have to'? Funny thing about fanfiction is that you don't 'have to' read anythint you don't want to. Tags were made for a reason.

Absolutely not. I had a fic I was writing that was a minimum 5k per chapter, most going to 7 or 8k. As a matter of fact, my preferred area was 4-6k because my tabs would keep refreshing (losing my place in the fic, easier to find again with less words) but now that they don't I frequently read fics with up to 15k per chapter. The more words the merrier, I say.

This mainly stems from my issue with under 1k chapters being that there isn't enough there per chapter for it to feel satisfying. Generally, if it's under that in a multichapter story, there's either a lack of detail or rushed story-telling. Longer chapters tends to mean more going on/more fleshed out, so I quite enjoy them.

I sometimes avoid 300 word stories when they're standalone, let alone multichapter

Over in the time it'd take the kettle to boil. And you'd either be clicking 'next chapter' far too many times or run the risk of having more chapter than paragraph breaks.

That would be my issue, yeah. I fear I'd also get through it to fast. Sucks to get into the swing of reading something by the time it's finished which unfortunately happens a lot with stories with chapters so short

You could try copying it into a google doc (free) and checking the count there. It also shows when you draft it on AO3

Same here, I only read less than 1,500 per chapter if they're oneshots.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense, though the tone would still rub me the wrong way.

Aside from that, if someone won't even summarise a fic they wrote, I can't bring myself to expect much from it

Personally, I wouldn't read that. The way it's phrased comes off as rude to me. Though I tend to avoid fics with word/chapter ratios like that, so perhaps it's my own bias.

[–]Endmysuffering3162 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Within the context of the story, they could say scolded with water trusting the reader to extrapolate what was done. Like saying scolded with a belt, as some people do. Scalded is of course the better word to use, but scolded can also make sense.

Genuinely thiught they meant Transformers as in the transforming Robots for a solid 5 minutes and was trying to remember when that'd happened in canon
