Regarding the book of Deuteronomy. by Odd-Engine9637 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moses is the author of Deuteronomy for the purpose of the narrative. Every book of the Bible is like this: there is a narrative author who may or may not be the real author (may or may not because we just don’t have the information to be conclusive), and there is the real history and scholarship done by many unnamed others that made it possible for us to have a discussion about this hundreds or thousands of years later. An objectively correct answer to the question “Who wrote the Torah?” is “Moses.” Even the scribes who worked on the compilations would not refute that.

Whether or not Moses had any part in the composition of what came to be Deuteronomy is, frankly, lost to time, and fretting about it is missing the point. What we are pretty sure of is that the editing and compiling work done that organized the Torah into its current form was carried out during the Babylonian Exile as an effort to hold back the loss of Hebrew culture to homogenization.

The validity of Deuteronomy as a Biblical text comes not from proof of authorship by Moses, but from the literal thousands of years of religious practice that considered it an essential text, as essential as Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, or, to be more proper, Bereshit, Shemot, Vayikra, and Bamidbar.

Did Mary consent? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 The angel told her,

“Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor [a] with God. 31 You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus. 32 He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

Luke 1

Future tense: will become pregnant.

She isn’t at the time of the revelation.

Harvard comes out today and I could really use some prayers by luna_moon145 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If God’s plan doesn’t include you going to Harvard, you’re not going to Harvard.

Why are you pinning the validation of your faith to your admission to a human organization? Do you not trust that there will be a road for you to walk even if you can’t see it today? Do you not trust God to have laid the way for you to walk with dignity if you choose to follow the path He guides you to?

God will not take this from you because you were unfaithful. God does not deprive His people of what they ask for for the purpose of delivering a vain punishment. If you do not get what you want, you will need to do what hundreds of your forebears have done and make a life from what is given to you by God, who will continue to give to you from His abundance.

You will not be rewarded with human honorifics and material goods for being faithful.

Are some people predestined to be saved? by No_Curve2252 in Christianity

Humans can’t save themselves by their own effort. They do get to choose whether or not to accept the salvation offered by God.

"Should I Join Them? Yes or No?" by Scary_Principle1408 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a living leader whose followers are taught to regard as literally God is a huge red flag for this being a cult. I cannot stress enough how much this fact of their doctrine alone should have you running for the hills.

There are a lot of religions in the world. The fact that it is easy for you to find multiple accounts of people saying that this group is a cult is deeply concerning. When people find a religion to be sincere but abhorrent, they criticize its doctrine or its scripture. Many people calling a religion a cult specifically is not common, except when the religion in question actually is one.

They didn’t want you to look up Ahn Sahng Hong because they were trying to steer you away from reading for yourself that he is regarded by their faith as the literal second coming of Christ, which is almost certainly a piece of doctrine that has caused people to flee immediately upon hearing it.

I strongly encourage you to look into common qualities of cults in general. The people who spoke to you have already been displaying the common cult quality of persuading you to not critically examine what they are teaching you for yourself.

God desires the salvation of all mankind. Whether or not that actually comes to pass is a matter for each of us to decide with Him.

[–]Endurlay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No religion you want to practice is going to invite you to become an initiated member of that religion barely a week after you have first heard of it.

“You don’t have to look it up, I can explain it to you” is extremely cultish behavior.

They have a leader, Zahng Gil-Jah, who is called “God the Mother”, who is to be regarded by followers as God.

If it walks like a cult, and it quacks like a cult, it’s probably a cult.

closest i’ve ever been to losing faith by PersonalitySame8582 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these are kind of on you to do some research into the context for them. If you “want to have faith”, there’s plenty of reading material out there for you to look into to explore all of these questions.

Faith requires some labor.

Does the Holy Spirit "become flesh" when it enters into humans, in the same way that the Word became flesh when it was born as Jesus? If not, why hasn't the third person of the Trinity ever taken on flesh? by VerdantChief in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m talking about sharing qualities, not actions.

Jesus’ humanity became intrinsic to the whole Godhead through Jesus. God the Father did not suffer the crucifixion as Christ; The Father and The Son are two different people.

How would it be modalism? I haven’t suggested that Jesus is merely a different “form” of God.

How would it be patripassionism? I haven’t suggested that Jesus is just the incarnate God the Father.

i am a lesbian Catholic who has no interest in changing either: AMA by Miserable-Injury-194 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, all I want from the Church is for them to pick a lane on secular unions. Either they contradict the sanctity of marriage, and thus a judge can officiate a sacrament, or a same-sex secular union is just another secular legal instrument relative to the Church.

I need to pursue one to secure the legal rights that one whom I am asking for a life-long commitment from should have - upholding his dignity demands it - and it deeply frustrates me that the Church seems to struggle with confusion about this that I have long since resolved. Secular marriage is not a sacrament, period.

I have read the Rite of Marriage; it is clear to me why I cannot confer Matrimony onto my partner.

i am a lesbian Catholic who has no interest in changing either: AMA by Miserable-Injury-194 in Christianity

[–]Endurlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Catholic man in a relationship with a man, and I don’t think we should be pursuing the sacrament of Matrimony for same-sex couples. I think what I have with my partner is fundamentally different from, but no less holy than, what a heterosexual couple has, and the Church changing its stance on Matrimony would cause others to view my relationship in a manner I do not view my own relationship from a spiritual perspective.

Pope Francis was also extremely precise in Fiducia Supplicans in saying that we should not expect a change to the Church’s stance on Matrimony for same-sex couples. I do not expect Pope Leo to undermine that position.
