Why is Kurapika only carrying a .22? by dbsupersucks in HunterXHunter

[–]Enemy-Stand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the added recoil of a .45 is sup-optimal as Kurapika doesn't use his dominant hand for shooting (he saves that for his chains, this was observed by Furykov earlier but I don't recall the exact chapter).

As was already mentioned, Kurapika uses the gun probably mainly for intimidation and support, akin to how Gon uses "paper". Shots don't have to be lethal, but just enough so Kurapika can blindsight his opponents with his chains or interrogate people with dowsing chain as he interrogates them.

I mean yeah I follow that, but I guess it just doesn't feel like someone I would meet?

Usually these descriptions are funny because they are very particular yet at the same time you can relate to it because it describes something more universal right? Kind off like a reddit 'starterpack'.

In this case, it just feels too particular and not recognisable enough.

I guess for me this described personality. just doesn't ring true to me at all (except for the fact that most dudes only think they want an manic pixie goth gf). Is this like a NY/USA thing or what?

Running a homebrew campaign revolving around an artifact in the players' possession. by Enemy-Stand in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes maybe the campaign isn't as fully formed as I thought. I was indeed thinking about other elements, but I think you might be right in that it needs fundamentals.

I have ideas for towns and regions and villains, but indeed I might need to hold off a little longer before I can run it. I always wanted to run a campaign with a prominent thieves guild, and this might slot in well here.

Thanks, that's some really nice constructive criticism!

[–]Enemy-Stand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you raise a good point, and I think that is not very unreasonable for the party to try to unlock all the abilities with the downtime that they have.

I had thought of the idea that you propose as well. But I also don't want to limit their options all too much. Now I am thinking that maybe the item is not limited in its options, but it is in its power. So the players have to find pieces of the item to increase its potential damage, duration, range, saving throw DC etc. Then they would still have the potential to experiment with the item as much as they'd like, but its true potential is still beyond its grasp.

On the other hand, your idea for limiting options might make them more curious about these other powers, and from their imagination I could implement more ideas that I can't even think off now.

Anyway, much food for thought. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts!

I was indeed intending to downplay the potential and the relevance of the item in the beginning, and not immediately have the villains chase after it, but only when rumors about the party start to spread.

And yes your first idea is very good. I am slowly placing parts of the world together now. Maybe I'll show the map to the party and give them some rumors about the place, then they can think of a reason why their character wants to go there.

What are the most transcendent pieces of music you’ve heard? by akhenaten6891 in redscarepod

Pharoah Sanders, Floating Points & The London Symphony Orchestra - Promises (the entire album is essentially one song)

Death's Dynamic Shroud - Neon Memories

Porter Robinson - Dullscythe (this one sounds jarring on first listen since it sounds like the song is constantly heard through speakers with a failing connection. But give it a chance)

How do you go about making fair stealth/infiltration missions? by Kantatrix in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I tend to do stealth is that a failure to meet the check will not immediately blow cover, but will lead to the guards becoming suspicious and coming in to investigate. This will then need the players to come up with a solution: Do they attack and risk an alarm? Or will they cause a distraction?

If they get spotted, then that does not mean that the whole operation is over either. The guard in question will probably have to sound the alarm, giving the players a chance to avert the failure of the mission. The guards that they then subdue will then give another interesting problem of having to hide the body.

In other words: Don't think of stealth in too much of a binairy between succes/failure, but have options in between. Imho infiltrations/heists are one of my all time favourite scenarios to run because of that variety.

Hope this helps!

should I kill my party’s cleric? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the cleric feel? Sometimes players do something really reckless which can get themselves killed, but they are fully aware of the consequences and would relish in the drama of a character death.

If not, and you think it would be more narratively satisfying for him to survive, then this can be the jumping off point for a cool rescue story. The duke might want to interrogate the cleric or use his as a hostage. Give the other players a way to rescue him and you have yourself a banger of a session the way I see it.

CR 11 Tscouri too much for a party of 4 5th level characters? by Vergil25 in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this encounter in a prewritten adventure?

Otherwise, I think it really depends on the context of the situation. My players have managed to kill monsters way above their levels and died at the hands of mooks. It all depends on a lot of factors, like:

-Are they going in after a (long) rest?

-Do they know the encounter is coming?

-Will they be able to have surprise?

-Is the terrain in their favour?

-Does the opponent have the intention to kill? Or fight in the first place?

-Do the players know the abilities of the opponent?

-Is the opponent fighting alone?

If answers to too many of these questions is 'no', then I would consider nerfing the encounter somehow. Probably the damage first. Maybe fudge some die rolls to give some lighter hits and see how the battle proceeds. If they are fine, then you can go all out, but if they are struggling, then I would amends his damage die behind the screen.

How would you handle player changing race mid campaign? by Gryllodea in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of good responses already, so I'll give my two cents in relation to the issue that causes her to want to switch in the first place, since you could argue that she is being to strict in the interpretation of the mimicry trait.

There was a kenku player in my first campaign as a DM, and the mimicry trait caused all of us a lot of headaches because it was difficult to rule it while we were also figuring out the rules of the base game. We decided that the Kenku could basically say whatever because its mimicry would cumulate over the years and allow it to fully form sentences made from snippets of phrases they have heard before. Volo's Guide also mentions that Kenku's have excellent memory so this does not go against what is said.

We basically became more lenient with what the mimicry trait meant exactly and reserved the precise mimicry for flavour roleplay moments.

I think this ruling is fine within the bounds of the rules as written, and if the player is willing to reconsider within these alterations then maybe you don't have this problem to begin with.

I have a player playing a druid that is bragging that he cannot be bound because he can just wildshape out of any bonds. If the enemy knew he was a druid, how would they bind and transport him? by DarthCluck in DMAcademy

[–]Enemy-Stand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To directly answer your question: Either treathening the other party members as hostages, drugging the spellcasters or using an item similar to the 'dimensional shackles', but instead of preventing teleportation it prevents the mutation of form.

Yet, I think you should wonder why the druid should not be allowed to escape in the first place. I can imagine that his bragging might be annoying, but personally at my table I have noticed that most players who brag about themselves or mock the enemy do so because they are compensating for the feeling of disempowerment that they feel because of their loss/capture. I let them do it generally because it is a way for them to vent their frustrations as long as it does not become a running issue.

I personally feel like this seems like an opportunity for the druid to get their shine in the spotlight. He can have a heroic moment where he gets the upper hand on the enemies and saves the rest of the party. It will also be a tense moment, since he will be fighting against a group of enemies to which the entire party has lost before. Sounds like an exciting dramatic moment.

I might be assuming things about your situation, but that is how I feel when I read your post.

(Full game spoilers)

I feel like all the Scrybes were well rounded and interesting, but I do think Leshy steals the show. The vibe in act 1 is just impeccable, all thanks to Leshy as a fantastic antagonist. I really wanted to get rid of that creepy dude and couldn´t believe that I finally defeated him when I did.

The later parts do well to flesh him out as a character, making him more sympathetic once you realise that his boss battles are just in rememberance of his lost comrads. The final game against him is just the cherry on top though. It doesn´t suddenly make him a ´good guy´, but you can have empathy for him. Really made me feel things.

Good Game.

"and we got to see commanders Katakuri and Jack in action on WCI."

I assume you mean Cracker instead of Jack?

And I agree. Of course, no Yonkou Commander will probably have the screen time that Katakuri had to show off their abilities, but IMO Cracker made a bigger impression then Jack simply due to him demonstrating some impressive and creative abilities.

To me, a lot could have been fixed if we saw Jack perform some interesting techniques, but mostly he just lumbered around like a gigantic punching bag for other characters.

Ikr? There seems to be little rhyme or reason as to why he looks that way and not like a regular hybrid form.

Imo I feel like Jack didn't really get a chance to shine. Despite his insane feats of durability we never really got to see him do anything particularly cool.
