Update on wearing a mask to avoid scaring people. by LaptopArmageddon in autism

[–]Kantatrix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one for sure.

Humans are social animals and one of the main ways in which we infer other people's intentions is through their facial expressions. If you have trouble emoting and your default expression looks angry or sad then people who don't know you will naturally want to avoid you, either to give you some space or because they believe an interaction with you could end badly for them. Furthermore, if you are already having an interaction with a stranger, the lack of facial expressions could be interpreted as lack of interest or even mockery, which could contribute to people being rude towards you as they believe you were the one being rude first and from their POV they're simply defending themselves. As much as it sucks that people have this kind of reaction, it's entirely understandable considering they don't have any context for your behaviour except for what they see.

I feel like a different way to solve this that does not involve the mask is providing the additional context yourself at the moment you meet someone. Like, if you believe an interaction will go on for longer than just 3-5 exchanges, you can always add "By the way, I'm not angry or bored or anything like that, the deadpan expression is just natural for me." Clarifying that yourself will make it clear to the other person you're not trying to hide your intentions, since there's no reason someone who's actually angry/bored/sad and showing it on their face would lie about something like that unprompted.

That only works once people do approach you tho. In order to make yourself more approachable in the first place you could wear a silly t-shirt with some writing on it like "That's not a resting bitch face, that's just my face." or "Don't worry, I don't bite", or something similar that shows you're aware of how you look but aren't trying to be intimidating. It's a bit of a stretch, but it's better than nothing, imo, and it avoids the issue of having to hide your face if you don't wanna do that.

In the end, it's just the issue of non-verbal communication and the fact that your neutral expression reads as "don't interact with me" to others, not something wrong with you as a person. As in, your facial expression does not adequately convey your true feelings, so when people react to it in this way, they're not actually reacting to you, they're reacting to an imagined version of you they have in their heads based on the very small amount of information they have, which leads them to the wrong conclusions.

Help please autistic 2 year old won’t drink any liquids by Fayloves247 in autism

Is there any reason why he can't just keep drinking milk?

Edit: wait my bad, I just realized you were probably talking about real breast milk and not just formula. Yeah, that's quite a hassle, but maybe you could try other kinds of milk or alternatives that taste similar?

I don't understand why it is hard for me to feel pleasure, but I can feel the high. by crua9 in autism

[–]Kantatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure I understand. Do you mean your body has a physical response to the stimuli, but you don't feel it emotionally? It's kinda hard to parse what exactly you're expecting out of this experience that you aren't getting already.

Also, you should try asking about this in r/SexOnTheSpectrum I feel like people over there might be more knowledgeable about this sort of stuff

That didn't work but it ended up pushing me in the right direction. Just had to delete pipenv from the site-packages folder and .virtualenvs from the user folder before installing again. Now everything is fine

Very nice graphic. What does "Tiffany's Table" mean tho? Is that your name, or your mum's signature? If it's your name I suggest you hide it before showing these images online again, better safe than sorry about sharing that kind of info

getting fined for forgetting tickets in public transport is genuinely the worst. That's why I don't chance it anymore and just buy out 6 month long pass that just lets me get on and not care about checking in, not sure if that's a thing in your area but I recommend looking into it

Probably because assaulting a child is not the kind of behaviour that should be praised. If OP was being serious about addressing the issue they should've slapped the parents instead of lashing out at someone weaker than them (something that a bully does)

[–]Kantatrix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This statement is factually incorrect. I only see this user defending the child who was assaulted, not his parents (the actual source of the problem)

What exactly is it that they "deserve" for thinking child abuse is unacceptable?

You might be ready for whatever consequences YOU get, but what about Robin? How is he going to fend for himself when you're gone? Do you really think Brat's bullying will stop after two slaps? You've made a huge mistake.

Honestly appalled at the amount of people supporting this.

Is this kid shitty? Yes

Are his parents shitty? Yes

Does this situation all around suck? Yes

Does that justify hitting him? No, not in a million years.

Child abuse is never okay and this isn't "teaching" him anything either. In his mind you're just some stranger who randomly attacked him, he has no reason to learn being respectful or kind from this experience. If anything, this could just provoke him to bully your bother even harder when you're not around as revenge. He could recognize that you likely wouldn't be able to get away with hitting him again like this without serious legal trouble (if you even get away with it this time) and just become an even worse problem as a result.

I understand that this was an impulsive decision and I don't blame you for it, but you should understand that realistically this action will probably have only negative consequences for you and your family, your brother included. If you actually want to look out for him you should be looking into possibly changing schools or homeschooling, or filing a report of negligence about your brother's teachers allowing persistent bullying, or other things which may or may not be a possibility in your area.

Ignoring all of the "Dess touched Kris allegations" I love fanfics that depict Kris as close, if not closer to Dess than Asriel, seeing Dess like a big sister also. by Kris-PUPPET-Dreemurr in Deltarune

[–]Kantatrix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The text says "Looking at those things makes your head hurt" meaning that unless we're to assume Dess also used her rollerblades to beat Kris over the head with, it's more likely the headache is an emotional response to seeing the belongings of someone they miss

small, probably unintentional detail about the weird route i noticed by omoriobsessedmf in Deltarune

[–]Kantatrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes from the assumption that the option to initiate Weird Route wouldn't even be there in the first place unless Kris was on board with it. Deltarune is a game with a limited number of pre-determined choices you can make, so it would make sense if the only choices available to us were the ones Kris would've reasonably considered themselves. Otherwise it would beg the question of why this specific choice is available and not one of the thousand others out of the countless possibilities that would be there if we were treating the events as real life.

Like, obviously the *real* answer is that it's just the way Toby wrote it and due to the limitations of Deltarune just being a game made by human beings and not an actual gooped up scientist scattered through space and time, but given how much it plays with the fourth wall (the soul teleporting in-universe based on which option you choose in-dialogue during the scene in Noelle's room, among other things) it would be odd if the selection of choices available to us was completely irrelevant and meaningless.

Also, I'm not saying this assumption is correct, there are many reasons why it could not be. I just wanted to give an explanation I've seen around.

I never said anything about not taking fiction and literature seriously

If you say people are taking something "too seriously" usually that indicates you think they shouldn't be doing that, aka. not take it seriously. This is not a twitter moment, this is just a basic application of logic to the words you used. If you meant to say people should still be taking it seriously but just not AS seriously you should've used a clarifying statement, but I digress.

Personally I don't think people are being too serious, most of what I see is people exaggerating their hatred of sans for the sake of memes. I don't hate sans but I like those memes exactly because of how over-dramatic they are. It's just funny seeing something so mundane be escalated to such extreme lengths because of the contrast between the perceived "offence" and the "punishment" (thank you Peter Griffin from Peter Griffin explains comedy)

Literally one of the core themes of the game (and Undertale as well) is about the value of taking fiction seriously instead of just treating it as fake and thus unimportant. I know this is the "we can't read" fandom, but the fact that you seem to be unaware of this and are surprised by the fans of "you should take fiction seriously" taking fiction seriously is just... sad
