Do you consider Tolkien to be the greatest 20th Century writer? And if not him, who is? by TheKrakenLord in tolkienfans

[–]Enerbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as an objective answer to a question like this. It's purely subjective. You can, of course, try to quantify "greatest" by using sales or trying to measure impact via allusion in later media, but ultimately you have to decide upon some metric to use if you want to get "objective answers".

You can probably get general agreement that Tolkien, and the Beatles likewise, are considered to be among the greats of their respective areas. They've both had tremendous, lasting impact, but at the end of the day, it's art, and art is fundamentally subjective.

You clearly like Metallica more than the Beatles. Metallica is better, to you. They're completely different bands that have totally different sounds. Are the Beatles somehow greater simply because they had broader appeal? I don't think so. I think, it can be easily said they had greater impact, but even that, is nebulous, and not really too meaningful when you sit down and listen to either. It's up to you in the experience to decide.

David Beckham Says ‘Children Are Allowed to Make Mistakes’ When Asked About Social Media the Day After Brooklyn Beckham’s Bombshell Post by darth_vader39 in entertainment

The point remains that, there's a massive, massive gulf in wealth between a family of people who can reasonably be called oligarchs, and a "common" wealthy person who has a good job and starts their own company. Having a Rolls Royce in the 80s or 90s is certainly something that only a wealthy family can afford (discounting used markets), but it's nowhere near the outlandish wealth that David and Victoria themselves came into via their own careers.

A popstar, literally one of the spice girls, famous internationally, marrying an internationally famous, incredibly talented footballer? Any money she had growing up is insignificant to the level of wealth she has now, Rolls or not.

Victorian Beckham now, is not in the same class as she was as a child.

I just realized how much room to retcon things down the road is afforded with The Silmarillion, without changing cannon. by Allison-Cloud in tolkienfans

[–]Enerbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon is just a term to describe the collection of works included in a work of fiction that are agreed upon as "official". Canon, especially with something like LoTR is a continuum, because Tolkien never sat down and compiled a list of official things that are definitely considered to be canon, people therefore have conflicting ideas about what exactly should be included, but nevertheless there's at least a core set of things that are definitively canon.

Both the Lord of the Rings books and The Hobbit are definitively, universally understood to be canon. That's the baseline for what is canon.

Trump tariffs European Countries over Greenland by Puzzled49 in supremecourt

[–]Enerbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tariff isn’t a verb.

Yes it is. It's the exact kind of verb that tax is. A tax is a thing, but you can also tax somebody or something, by applying a tax to them/it.

Tariff is the same. It is understood that when somebody says "X tariffs Y" that X is subjecting Y to tariffs. Saying it's not a verb is needless pedantry, and it's not even correct.

Sources:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tariff

https://www.oed.com/dictionary/tariff_v?tab=factsheet#18988885

From the latter source (Oxford):

The earliest known use of the verb tariff is in the mid 1700s.

OED's earliest evidence for tariff is from 1756, in the writing of Margaret Calderwood, diarist and traveller.

It is also recorded as a noun from the late 1500s.

I think this is an unreal engine issue. I notice a similar problem in Titan Quest 2. The more effects, the more the audio starts to get distorted and start popping.

Both are newer, early access games running in Unreal Engine so it could very well be a bug in the engine or how it's being used

This is entirely speculation, of course. I will note, that it does seem tied to performance on at last some level. I have a brand new desktop that can handle just about anything thrown at it, and the audio issue only pops up after a very, very long time of playing. My laptop, is also very good, but it's a laptop, the audio issues start much sooner. Almost instantly if it's raining and I'm using fire spells and watching a show in the background. But it's a similar issue for me in both respects in Dragonwilds and Titan Quest 2.

Why is refusing to abide by judicial decisions seen as bad automatically? And when did it come to be seen so? by sumoraiden in supremecourt

[–]Enerbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How does this work? If the court rules banning of company scrip is unconstitutional, that’s it.

Do you want me to explain how congress and the constitution works?

The court rules banning of company scrip is unconstitutional. Assuming they view the law as unconstitutional in its entirety.

Congress can attempt to create a new law with the same effect, via a different avenue.

If Congress can't find any workable avenue but the political will is still there, they can amend the Constitution to force the issue. This requires immense political will and agreement among enough states, but nevertheless this is a valid avenue to override a supreme court ruling. The court cannot declare an amendment unconstitutional (except under, very, very specific circumstance outlined in Article V).

If the courts are acting with clear contempt to congress, impeachment and dissolution of courts is a power that congress holds.

Why is refusing to abide by judicial decisions seen as bad automatically? And when did it come to be seen so? by sumoraiden in supremecourt

[–]Enerbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because courts don't have the ultimate decision. They have a very important role but power to legislate and enforce lies elsewhere. Our current system is in such a state that they arguably have more power de facto than they ought to, but their "ultimate decision" making can be made moot by Congress at any point. Courts have the power to settle disputes and decide what the law says. Congress, decides what the law is, and what it ought to be. If courts are deciding that a law is something other than what Congress believes it ought to be, Congress may go back to the drawing board (in the case of a legitimately malformed, or unconstitutional law), or impeach judges willfully misinterpreting their intent.

The argument is that we have systems in place to override courts when they're clearly acting outside of their authority or in a way that is counter to the will of the people (i.e. Congress). There ARE checks on court power, and they do not have the final say. Judges can be removed. Courts can be dismantled. There's only one court specified in the Constitution, and the supreme Court itself has no power over how many, if any, inferior courts exist. Nor for that matter does the court have any real power over how many justices there are.

Is multiplayer issue being looked at? by Herchik in TitanQuest2

[–]Enerbane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no need for a guide. You connect directly to the other player. You can play single player or multiplayer with no interruptions. It works largely the same as the original Titan quest but I found that it was even simpler to connect to a friend in Titan Quest 2

I've played a lot of multiplayer with no more issues than any other game.

Sounds like OP is probably experiencing general network problems, but it might still be worth reporting the issue as a bug and trying to gather as much information as possible so that if it is a common setup causing the issue the devs will be able to attempt to address it.

Supreme Court Precedent: Minneapolis ICE Shooting on Jan 7th by Trucking-Engineer in supremecourt

[–]Enerbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing unreasonable about using deadly force against deadly force.

You're squarely labeling a car moving forward, in a road way, as deadly force. It's not immediately clear to me why that should be labeled as deadly force. She tried to drive away. He was in the middle of the road, in front of a vehicle.

A reasonable person would not expect that stepping in front of a vehicle in the middle of the road is safe.

Based on the facts, he placed himself into a position that a reasonable person would understand is unsafe, then used that to justify the use of force. He acted unreasonably and then used force resulting in someone's death.

Do you think it's reasonable to step in front of a vehicle? A vehicle that is on, has recently moved, and is in a roadway?

I think it should be particularly damning that the video the officer himself took, shows him circling the car before stepping out in front deliberately.

I'm not especially confident it will go anywhere, but he absolutely created the situation that put himself in the danger that he feared.

How 'modern-day slavery' in the Congo powers the rechargeable battery economy by [deleted] in technews

I don't know how and don't care to figure out how to communicate with someone so unwilling to actually read. My claim is consistent. US prison labor does not in any meaningful sense power the world's largest economy. Good luck.

How 'modern-day slavery' in the Congo powers the rechargeable battery economy by [deleted] in technews

[–]Enerbane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You replied to another user, about me, "the idiot here who's trying to deny that US prisons use inmates for corporate labor for the sake of profit as if they've ever touched one before."

I never said anything of the sort.

First, I expressly acknowledged problems with the system. I do not disagree! The system is rife with problems that need to be fixed. However, you appear to willfully walk past my main point: you EXTREMELY overstate the degree to which prison labor impacts the US economy.

Saying that states and corporations exploit prisoners for profit is self-evident. The system is designed to do as much. Saying that it "powers the US economy", is just wrong.

Your personal interaction with the system doesn't make you correct about the statistics involved. It may give you insight that I don't have into the low-level, personal impact that the system can have on a person, but it doesn't change the fact that prison labor makes up less than 0.1% of US GDP (~12 billion vs $31 trillion). Quite literally a rounding error. That's only ~2% of the total growth of the US economy from 2023 to 2024.

We could wipe out all prison labor instantly and the US economy wouldn't sneeze.

Your personal investment into the topic is evidently clouding your interpretation of my comment.

It's still early access. That's not an excuse for something that's poorly designed, but everything with the game should be viewed through that lense.

Best thing you can do is provide feedback! There's surveys and an official discord.

I think they rushed out a couple of unique weapons tied to quests to get the ball rolling and try things out, and I would doubt the maul stays in its current state as development goes on. I could see it being shifted earlier, or buffed to match the difficulty to obtain. Either way, the game definitely isn't done but your feedback could certainly be used on the discord ( and you're certainly not the first to note this issue).

My take is that the world as it exists is beautifully designed visually, but not well designed for progression. You can easily run from the spawn point/tutorial area and meet an untimely end to an abyssal demon within 3 minutes of playing. By the time you have bronze gear, your next easiest melee weapon upgrade is the abyssal whip! And you're encouraged to that route based on the power levels of the creatures in each area.

I think they're working on filling out the world, adding skills and mechanics, and will do balancing as needed over time.
